The association as cited in the news seems to care more about the charm and integrity of a structure in the neighborhood than the damage their stance causes to a child and their family. People with disabilities should have every right to modify access to their homes to suit their needs, regardless of history. Recommending that this family move adds yet another challenge, barrier, and potential strain; all of which are wholly unnecessary and ableist. For years people with disabilities have been denied access to public and private spaces in the name of historical preservation, but all this does is tell the disabled community that we are not valued enough to gain access to the same spaces as the abled. It says we are less than. Valuing ableism over humanity does not support your mission of enhancing community. I find this group’s choice to sue over a garage appalling.

Noticed on the website that OTTA said they are “committed to enhancing the quality of life for residents in the area” and wanted to point out that that statement is entiretly incorrect. This association is discriminatory against the disabled community and would rather protect a building that was built to ablist standards rather than support a young woman in their community. Not all things from the past are worth protecting. This history of Chicago’s ablism should be something we actively work to abolish and learn from. The OTTA is on the wrong side of history.

Is this the association that Mr Weiss discriminates against a child in a wheel chair by complaining about the house renovations to accommodate the handicapped child. Pretty sick.

There are a number of art classes offered here for all levels and even yoga classes. The students and faculty put on an art show every year, and the Old Town Art Fair takes place here every year too. Worth checking out!

I grew up on North Park Ave between Willow St & St Paul Ave use to go to the art fair every year until I went in the miliary in 1970. I have traveled all around the world and now live in Wisconsin. I have to plan a trip back to see it again. Loved eating the Chicken Teriyaki from the Japanese Church which is now the Old Town Triangle Art Center.
