I really enjoyed it because its so open vs tolleston trail or west beach with the million stairs there all great trail but this one the entrance is so beautiful the feel of trees as you enter. Oh and its flat.
Watching the sandhill cranes come in for the landing was neat to see
It is so neat to hike this trail. Unless we are in a drought you better have tall boots in because the trails are often under 6” or more of water in spots. It is worth it to see the unique plants and BIG and tiny birds. The egrets or Sandhill Cranes are so neat to see. There is a nice deck to sit on and take some photos or just sit on and LISTEN!
This walking trail takes from 20 minutes to an hour. 1.7 miles long. It has some great views of the wetland complex. It is free and home to a variety of birds ranging from Gray blue herons to sandhill cranes.Stop at the great marsh observation deck and enjoy a beautiful view for a few moments.#CityExperts. @Localguides
This is a very nice trail. Im so happy they made this. Its still a fairly new addition to the area, i think its maybe three years new. Great place to hike, hike to beach as well. Worth checking it out if your in the area.
Great trail even during midsummer when its extremely hot and humid. One thing to note is that the handicap parking is separate from the rest of the parking making it easier to get to the Observation Deck.
Peace and serenity on a trail that is Serene and beautiful. Trail is through hiked, so prepare to double back from either the East or West trailhead once you get to the end.
We spend a lot of time here.
Peaceful, beautiful, fragrant with flowers and grasses in the warm sun.
Why is it called the Great Marsh? Simple. It once stretched from Michigan City nearly to Gary and, being impassable, it was a barrier to development of the Indiana dunes and shoreline until the twentieth century. The Great Marsh was dramatically altered around the turn of the century. Sliced by roads and ditches. Drained for agriculture and homesites. Vegetation transformed, wildlife fled.Slowly, remnants of the marsh are being restored to approximate their previous state. The Great Marsh Trail, which follows abandoned streets once within the town of Beverly Shores, takes you through a section of the restored marsh. The trail is flat and about a mile in length. You will see birds of all kinds, including waterfowl and wading birds like herons and egrets. Hawks may wheel in the sky. Finches will flit through the brush. You will hear frogs, see turtles, perhaps see deer, muskrat, or racoon. Its a marsh: the trail may be muddy, sometimes even water-covered in areas. Parking is only allowed at the trailhead, unless you have a handicap permit. In addition to the marked trail there are other abandoned roads that can be followed a ways, depending on the season. Jones Avenue is across Broadway and a bit north of the parking lot. It leads to another recently restored section of the marsh. The National Park Service has plans to restore additional parts of the marsh.
This is that the best trail for campground peeps...
Pretty in the summer and serene.
Another amazing natural gem in Northern Indiana.
First time there I will be back again !!!!!
