As a photographer, I can say the Hunter Museum is truly a wedding dream! Its the perfect venue for a wedding! Its modern architecture is juxtaposed with beautiful views of the Tennessee River! Not only is the venue absolutely stunning, but Stephanie excels in customer experience and taking care of their clients. They put so much care and time into the venue and every wedding or event that happens there. If you are searching for a venue with impressive views, access to downtown Chattanooga, and amazing staff, the Hunter Museum is for you!

I really enjoyed the museum. Beautiful building and exhibits! Appreciated the docent who spoke with us and helped get us thinking about the various works. Ive never experienced a place like this. The admission is a bit steep ($20/person) but there are also several discounts offered to certain groups. I have to applaud the ebt cardholder discount they offer. Knocking $18 off the price makes this beautiful, culturally enriching experience much more accessible for ALL families. Wish more places offered this!

Really nice museum situated in an old mansion. The art was good, but the architect was a gem. Also, if you can, find David the security guard. Not only is he very helpful, but he is also very knowledgeable about the collection and the architecture. All around pleasant visit.

Despite some posts/reviews this place is not free. There are discounts for seniors and students but otherwise it is $20. The museum is very pretty though and the balconies have great views of the river. Despite it being mostly American Historical Art, there was still a nice variety of other pieces. If you are concerned about social distancing, this museum was not crowded when we went in the middle of a Saturday and people were following guidelines such as wearing masks and staying 6 feet apart.

Had a great time visiting the Hunter Museum of American Art. It was really fun, clean, and the staff was friendly. I enjoyed seeing the local artist work being displayed, there were different genres and the mansion itself is really cool. I think any family would enjoy visiting, the views are fantastic as well. I did not have any issues while visiting here either.

The Hunter museum is absolutely the best place to come and visit if you love history or art. You will find not only fun and unique history of Chattanooga but all around the world. Different places in time with art and history. The museum is very diverse in what it has on display at any given time. They do a good job with get new and exciting pieces all the time. This place is very unique with modern design styles on one side and old traditional design in the mansion. You will see lots of weddings and events going on all the time too.Check the wooden horse outside it is pretty different. It is a great place to get all dressed up for a date with someone.

Love the outdoor sculpture. I was on vacation and because I have my dogs with me, I couldnt go inside the museum. Instead, I walked around the outdoor area and enjoyed the art sculpture outside the museum. I like how there are so many that I get to enjoy without having to go inside. Since Im a dog lover, my favorite is the dog giving a high five located by the Walnut Street Bridge and The Chattanooga Glass Bridge. Im not sure why the bridge is called a glass bridge when it is all metal.

This is one of my favorite museums in the country. I never drive I-75 without stopping at the Hunter. It has a tremendous collection of American art, very broad selection of artists, and a lot of very nice glassware and rotating exhibits. I have never been disappointed. I recommend the Hunter to everyone. A side benefit is that its adjacent to a walking bridge across the Tennessee River which takes you to a great neighborhood for lunch if youre interested and have time.

Several centuries of great American art are on permanent display along with rotating featured shows for added variety- Hunter is a very good local museum. The 3 museum buildings themselves are tributes to American architecture and have a very rich history detailed in progressive photographs and interesting written descriptions.Devote a minimum 3 hours to see everything, double that if you enjoy sitting and really taking time to read about each piece and doing some introspective study.

Great art museum with a broad selection of genres and periods on display. The more modern-looking museum building houses the special exhibits upstairs, with the permanent collection downstairs and in the older, mansion building. The buildings are works of art themselves! The gift shop has a better-then-average collection of souvenirs and gifts, suitable for all ages. Only reason this didnt get 5 stars is the price. $19 seemed a little steep. Other than that, this place is fantastic.

Only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the whole 2nd floor and foyer was closed for renovations. Good visit, good balanced collection of work and special focuses on the Hudson River group and functional and sculptural glasswork. Architecture of the building was very nice, art lounge area in the galleries was a nice kid friendly spot and good addition. Views out the window were wonderful. Was definately with the $15 and with no crowds and moving fast was here for about 2 hours total. Gift shop had good variety and prices as well.

I dont do a lot of museums but this place was awesome. The whole place was great but the best part imho was the Noel Anderson part of the building.... And i say building because he had two rooms full of blak history and his modern views on recent black events.... Some reflecting a negative light and some a positive. Whether thats right or not, I cant say but thats what art is right.... How a person sees it.

This museum has a fantastic collection of pieces spanning many distinct genres of art over the past hundreds of years. While it may not be as extensive as a museum in DC or NYC, but it was by far a very well curated museum that brought together both well known and lesser known artists in its three spaces. The first building, with its swooping architecture and wonderful outlooks, houses the temporary exhibit, which had many skilled and insightful Tennessee artists displayed. The second building is the original Hunter house, which houses mainly portraits and landscapes pre 1900. Under the house (in a transition area from the temporary exhibit building to the permeant modern art building) is a series of small rooms with a variety of art paintings and pieces. The permanent modern art collection in the final building is an exciting collection of 20th century and 21st century pieces, including a side-room with beautiful glass pieces. This museum is also situated right by a great art district in Chattanooga, which you can walk through if you follow the Tennessee River walk path/signs. If you end up at the spiraling sculpture garden, its an extension of equally astonishing pieces of sculpture. I highly recommend this museum.

A great museum with a surprisingly extensive collection housed in two beautiful buildings right on the Tennessee River. It was a lovely way to spend an afternoon with my wife.As we finished walking through the permanent exhibits, we made our way across the building to see the special exhibit. I let loose some audible flatulence that echoed through empty lobby. We were greeted at the top of the stairs by 4 or 5 laughing security guards. Now we call it The Fart Museum.Permanent pieces by Liechtenstein, Warhol, and Grant Wood to name a few. A great mix of American pieces from the 1800s all the way to current pieces. Would recommend.

This is a beautiful museum but I wish the young security guards in the Southbound exibit hadnt followed us around every single step just because I had small kids with me. I am a store manager and fully understand the importance of controlling my children. I also know these exhibits need to be monitored closely but not like we experienced. My kids didnt touch a single thing but we were still disrespectfully followed around to the point where we cut our visit short out of anger. This was our first and last time here...my kids were excited for their first art museum visit as aspiring artists themselves but we will just take a trip to Atlanta the next time I take them.

This is a rock solid regional art museum. Its literally built on rock. The museum is set in 3 sections. The Mansion represents pre 20th century art. The east wing contains modern and contemporary art. The pavilion houses special exhibits and a special event space. The collection is diverse and moving. While there are works by major artists, its the inclusion of regional work and work that concentrates on the south that matters. The space is wheelchair accessible and there is paid parking.

This was really cool and a great deal. I love to visit art galleries and museums when I visit a new town and some museums are quite pricey. This one was a great price, especially for how large it is and the variety of artwork and history. We came after we had breakfast and came back after getting lunch. It does take some time to walk through the entire museum. The current rotating exhibit was really awesome. The artist was the creator of sets for PeeWees Playhouse among other really recognizable things to those who grew up in the 80s & 90s.

I went about a week ago and I just wasnt impressed by any of the art. However, the price reflected it so its not a complete waste of time. :)

The focus of the Hunter Museum is its collection of American art, perhaps one of the largest in the southeast U.S., and heavily weighted toward oils and works on paper. Still, it’s a good museum and I would definitely recommend visiting.
