The single most perfect building in the world. It makes the Taj Mahal look asymmetrical. And theres literally no other room in the United States like the Dome Room.
The Rotunda is a phenomenal piece of history -- offering breath taking architectural character and presence. From the moment the structure appears, the roof shines the brightness of the Virginia sky. The building is perfectly proportional in geometry, further accentuating its beauty. The bottom floor offers history of the structure and can be accessed from beneath the main entrance on the lawn side. The second floor has several large round rooms along with a statue of Thomas Jefferson. It can be accessed from either side up the main stairs. The third floor is where the main dome room can be accessed and has many study areas for students. It can be accessed after entering the building and going up one of the narrow stair cases. The dome room also has a balcony where one can overlook the main space. The view of the lawn from the main dome room is amazing. The Rotunda truly is a must see!
Love UVA My Granddaughter has a room on the lawn just steps from the Rotunda
Pretty campus with history you can feel. Plenty of places to sit and relax as well.
Nice historic visit, but the doors was locked up
If you like history, Virginia history, UVA, or architectural history, then you need to go here. Very photogenic location. Try for spring or fall as the surrounding foliage adds a lot to the experience, be it photographic or just exploring the campus on a day hike.
Better in real life than in pictures. The school is huge! Also, nestled in the lovely Charlottesville.
An icon of Virginia and historic building in UVA campus.
An amazing building. The top floor has to be experienced. It would be an inspiring place to study and to think. The lower level museum has a great deal of interesting artifacts and displays about the history of the building and the university. The original chemistry lab is well worth seeing. I would like to come back and the planetarium shows.
Wonderful lecture regarding the history and significance of UVA and the Rotunda to Jeffersons vision of education as the foundation of liberty and our republic
Beautiful! Detail is amazing.
Remember where you are. This is Thunderdome. Death is listening, and will take the first man that screams.
From the Lawn to the dorm rooms to the Rotunda these are must sees when visiting UVA
Nothing can match the beauty of the Rotunda and the Lawn, especially in the fall.
Wow! What a University! Stunning, especially at night!
Great visit, not to be missed! Make sure to check out the visitors center on the ground floor (one floor below the entry floor).
If you ever have an opportunity to visit at night, do it.
Beautiful restoration. Even if you have seen the Rotunda in the past, it is worth coming back to Charlottesville and UVa to see it again.
Do yourself a favor and take the time to take a tour from a U-Guide. These UVA student volunteers are knowledgeable and passionate about the history of UVA. We thoroughly enjoyed our time touring the Rotunda and the Lawn.
Beautiful. Lots of history.
They were very helpful
A must visit for anyone exploring the historic campus
This building is a further example of the genius of Thomas Jefferson. Visiting the University of Virginia (founded and designed by Jefferson) is a very pleasant experience, and the Rotunda is the highlight. Spending a couple of hours here is an ideal complement to a visit to Monticello, the little mountain. Go to Monticello first. Come here on the next day. Visitor parking is on Emmet St. S, next to the university bookshop.
Early morning walk after graduation is a great time to have a good look around and take in the architecture.
Beautiful afternoon.
Historical and interesting. Worth a trip to see
Beautiful Campus, and UVA students were helpful and friendly when directing us around the area.
Loved the historical nature of the building. Seeing the secret doors between the rooms was really cool!!
The Rotunda at the University of Virginia was part of the entire college designed by Thomas Jefferson. It is an excellent example of Neo Classical Architecture. A truly beautiful building.
Mr. Jeffersons masterpiece. The architecture is beautiful. Truly the centerpiece of the University of Virginia !
My absolute favorite spot in Charlottesville
Thomas Jefferson was truly a genius when it came to architecture and this rotunda reflects that period I wish Id have more time to explore the interior.
Must see for the beauty and the history that goes with it.
Beautiful place to stop at if youre in the area.
Beautiful rotunda and the bldgs around. Very interesting tour of UVA. Excellent university. Great planetarium!
So beautiful especially during Christmas holidays
Beautiful place to take a stroll around at night.
The newly renovated Rotunda allows for more insight into the history of the building and how it evolved with the University over time.
Historic landmark at UVA. Beautiful architecture and views of the lawn. Serves as a library during the day
Beautiful, stately, and a piece of American history at University of Virginia. Definitely worth touring.
Great on a warm spring day.
Not much to see unless you are attending an event . They do have a small museum about the Rotunda in the basement . Honestly unless you are a dyed-in-the-wool Wahoo, its another brick building.
Family friendly - nice historical & educational - very beautiful
Fun, the lawn is nice and expansive. Fun place to be, but a decent walk from the other places.
Very cool historic building on the campus of University of Virginia.
Historic and beautifully restored. Jeffersons rotunda is always worth a visit.
Quiet place to read and tour with kids to expand knowledge on Thomas Jefferson and history of UVA. Middle school aged kids enjoyed.
Good place to study for UVA students.
United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization world heritage site. ”The University of Virginia is a fine example of the architectural ideal of the Age of Enlightenment put to use in the great educational programme of the third President of the the United States.”
Historical building. Neat and clean. Well maintained. I love to be here and spent a great time. This was the place where i would love to be again.
Fantastic. The campus area is amazing and the rotunda give you an example of classically architecture
Beautiful building, steeped in history. A must see for anyone visiting Charlottesville.
What a beautiful area! It is a wonderfully landscaped area, rich with history. The original grounds of the University of Virginia are well worth at least a few hours to visit, walk around and talk to students, faculty and the various other visitors. There are knowledgeable folks walking around who can answer questions and offer insight on the great history that surrounds you.
A nicely preserved, very historical building that is the original library for the school of Thomas Jefferson with a The Lawn, historically rustic student dormitories for a few elite senior year students, and senior professor/ deans housing to go along with it! AND: Edgar Allan Poes room is on the West Range ready to look into through a sheet of glass to give you a perspective of what all the dormitories looked like a hundred years ago! Though it is a great historically preserved place to visit, I was disappointed on the historical tour since it was guided by students with racial biases as their driving force. Also the restrooms should be open to the public even when the mighty UVA is out of session!
Great ful fall is coming but still work for the wild streeks.
Mr. Jeffersons finest achievement. I think the Rotunda and the Lawn are more beautiful and interesting than Monticello. Be sure to take a guided tour with an experienced guide who can point out all the details of Jeffersons design.
The Rotunda is an absolutely astounding building on UVAs grounds. This spectacular library was designed by Jefferson to be the the center of the campus to show that knowledge, not religion should be the center of a college.
Open house most days. Visit one of the most recognizable academic structures ever built.
On a college visit for my son. The university was beautiful and very historical. Enjoyed our time there
Historical treasure open to the public.
Really beautiful and full of history.
Beautiful area to see architecture.
No other place like it! Very educational. Thomas Jefferson continues to amaze, after all these years.
Very historical. The mall is under a lot of renovation, but still very cool.
Even more beautiful in person. Pictures dont do it justice.
This view is just incredible. What a beautiful location
The Rotunda is beautiful. Go visit it soon before Thomas Jefferson is completely erased from Charlottesville.
So cool!!!! this place is so neat, not a lot to see but it is really cool to walk around in and see the history. love the little reading sections, super cute!
Love the history but the building seems choppy. Interior diminishes the rotunda effect.
Best collegiate campus in the US. Just quietly stunning.
It is the well maintained centerpiece of one of Americas most prestigious universities.
Cool spot to see!
Historic and photogenic
This is the recently renovated and historical rotunda of the University of Virginia. A must see if you are visiting the Grounds of the University.
Perfect
Beautiful spot at UVA with a rich history. Jefferson designed the Rotunda as the hub of UVAs academical village, with the lawn and its rooms branching away from it. The place has been kept much the same, despite a massive fire (which was exacerbated by a professor, Echols, blowing a hole in the wall to put out the fire, which just accelerated it instead) and multiple renovations. Its super nice in the spring and fall, a great place to visit and take pictures.
Got good tour thru American Box wood Society Convention
Go see the historic and symbolic building. You will not be dissapointed.
Very nicely laid out history exhibit.
Timeless architecture
Interesting location at U.V.A.
A must see when visiting Charlottesville. It is beautiful and historically significant.
This is a really nice mini museum within UVA. The architecture is neat and replicates a little bit of Monticello, Jeffersons home. The UVA Academical Village as well as his home was actually designed by Jefferson himself as he was known to be a self-made architect. On top of the rotunda is a library which is very cozy and quiet and has a birds eye view of the village.
Rotunda at UVA is a nice place to visit.
Whats not to love. All that history and stuff.
Wonderful reception and dinner. A great place.
Very historically famous place
Beautiful design.
