We loved at that we were able to go into the house and still have that aspect of our visit, despite all of the restrictions in place. Digital access to information and signs on things were very helpful. A fascinating place built by a fascinating individual. We appreciate the recognition of Sally Hemmings and her children, as well as the contributions of enslaved peoples to the visions of Thomas Jefferson. We also appreciated the option to walk rather take the shuttle from the visit center to Monticello itself.

Very nice place to visit. The staff is great. Learned a lot about Thomas Jefferson and his family - very interesting. Everything is well preserved. The impersonator of Jefferson was very good - the man looks just like him and plays the roll well. Overall, a beautiful place. Jefferson was a man of great taste. On a personal note, the slavery that took place there was sad and troubling, but at least they don’t hid it.

As far as historical house tours go in the US it’s pretty decent. We did the grounds since you need to book at least a day in advance to tour the house due to COVID19. They seem to have no restrictions on people touring the grounds and tickets are $20 per person. The grounds are lovely and the garden has so many varieties of edible plants growing in it. They are doing on a good job of social distancing on the shuttles up the hill to the house, every second set of seats is roped off and all windows are open. They don’t enforce wearing a face covering anywhere except the shuttle. So take that into account.

Super neat place to visit with the family. If you are a history buff, or if you just appreciate the American revolutionary period, this is a must. The house has been preserved and restored to magnificent condition, and there are many things to see. There is currently a self guided tour to get you around the house, and they are being very deliberate about how many are allowed in at any given time. They require reservations by shuttle time, but you do not have to actually ride the shuttle. You can walk up and down from the property (about half a mile to the house), but it is a steep hill. The views from the house are amazing as well. Definitely a good way to kill an afternoon, and a good educational experience for the kids.

Great tour of Monticello. Interesting facts about Jefferson and his like. Died in deep debt. Wrote the Declaration but had slaves until he died, probably because of the debt. Designed Monticello. Redesigned it too. 40 years to build. It was sold at his death to pay off his debt. Due to covid, a rare chance to take photographs which have never been allowed before 2020.

This was my first visit and it was great. This piece of history is respectfully preserved allowing for a tranquil self guided visit. There are plenty of staff to help answer questions, direct you to places in the house and on the grounds that youd miss if youre not careful. There are outdoor interactive activities that give perspective on life at the house. Take your time, book your tickets early, and enjoy. If you book afternoon tickets you are sure to feel rushed and your wont have time to visit all of the outside exhibits. Have a drink and a snack at the house and enjoy the same view residents of the house would have had. Its a great place and well worth the visit.

Such a lovely experience. The intro before you go in with your group was amazing and pertinent to the times and who Jefferson was. The grounds are gorgeous and the history is presented thoughtfully and graciously. I do hope that one day they do something more for the slave graveyard. I believe there needs to be something there in their honor. The historians and people who work there are so nice and you should totally grab some wine before you go or soap.

At first my wife and I were a little worried about coming during covid but they had everything cleaned and appropriately arranged so it would give us the best experience possible, guess what mission accomplished. We had an absolutely wonderful time there and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful with any questions we had. We had our 16 month old with us and he loved looking all around at the flowers and trees also seemed to enjoy the house. They even had a ramp for us to take the stroller in and out of the house so youll be able to take a stroller in and out if it is small enough so it can fit through a doorway. Also the bus is a little tight for the stroller so we rode in the back and held the stroller infront of us in the back middle seat. Some of the seats were roped off so you might be able to place it in those seats. I wouldnt suggest walking back with the stroller because it is steep at some points also has rocky areas kinda like speed bumps. There was a lot of trees and flowers there so late fall or summer would be a beautiful time to go. Hope you enjoy as much as we did.

Hike the trail (40 minutes, medium difficultly) or take the bus (4 minutes) from the visitor center to Monticello. Your tour of the house is 20 minutes, self guided, following a clockwise fashion of the lower level. 20 minutes is a rough estimate of the average time it takes, there is no one rushing you. So please dont keep and eye on your watch like I did. You dont have to purchase the $13 guide book they have QR codes you can scan with your phone that tell the same information with video. I did purchase the book because there is more detailed information and I got to keep it as a keepsake. Wonder the grounds and gardens at your leisure. Check out the kitchens and cellars below the main house. Grab a snack, an old time brewed adult beverage, old fashioned bottled pop, or water at store below. Take your time, learn, and enjoy.

Even on a very rainy day in August our family was still able to enjoy Monticello due to the well organized, knowledgeable staff and the safety measures in place following covid-19. Im also mentioning the weather because if you happen to visit during poor weather, you can still enjoy the property. Just make sure dress for the occasion.-Parking is free.-It is recommended to purchase in advance. You can also purchase The official guide to Thomas Jeffersons World.-No military discounts.-as mentioned earlier, staff is very well informed and insightful.-You take a shuttle from the gift shop area to the top of the mountain. From there youll meet under a white tent and your first tour guide will give you 5-minutes of All things Things Jefferson.-Slavery is addressed right off the bat. This is a hot topic issue, and with my homeschooled children, Im not looking for a white washed version of American History. I was listening for words or phrases like, they were treated well or they did chores, but no, I think the staff were really thoughtful about their language in describing the real lives of the enslaved in Monticello.-There are different tours you can purchase, some will take you in different parts of the home or property. We plan on returning and may try the Slavery at Monticello tour. There is also a Behind the scenes tour that takes you to the upstairs rooms. All in all, its not a low cost trip, bit well worth the price for the learning of American History. I didnt see any military discounts, but I believe they do some around veterans day.

They do a nice job with social distancing. I arrived a little early than my scheduled tour but it didnt matter. They have plenty of staff working, there is a bit of a bottle neck at the house tour. This was my second time, and my wife’s first time visiting Monticello. There are many wonderful experiences on this property, including the outside architectural masterpiece of the building itself, and the internal workings, Furniture, books, clocks, and other items of interest that Jefferson used daily. Don’t miss the working tunnel that runs underneath the house on the first floor of the property, a very busy place where slave labor worked to iron the sheets, brew the beer, send bottles of wine up to the dining room on dumbwaiters, and otherwise keep the household running. Another wonderful place to visit visit on the property is the gardens, 1000 feet of various flowers, vegetables, fruits, and other wonders of nature. Because of COVID-19, there are various learning stations set up on the property, including information about the enslaved workforce, a talk with Thomas Jefferson himself, and a talk about the gardens, and other interesting topics. We are dealing with issues of race as a country right now, and this makes it very difficult to tell the story of the third President of the United States, but Monticello and the staff who work there do this in a fashion that is entertaining, educational, and fun.

This really is a beautiful place to go as far as the landscapes. I dont like part of the history here but it is what it is and none of us can change that. It isnt a good feeling hearing about the slavery back then. I enjoyed going to this place for the scenic views. You werent allowed to take pictures on the inside of the house - not exactly sure why. We got to go on the first floor and actually some down below since there was bad weather. We saw Jeffersons bedroom which was unique to say the least. When we first walked into the house I wasnt expecting how it looks I was expecting something more grandeur but it just wasnt in the entrance way. The There were animal antlers, European/Indian looking stuff on the wall, etc. We enjoyed the walk outside - grounds, pond, garden/slavery tours, etc. They have little exhibits where they brought up the wine in the wine cellar, the iron they used to use, some history downstairs under the main house of sally and other slaves and people from back in the day. All of the tour staff were very knowledgeable. The visitor center staff was friendly. They do have bathrooms near the visitor center and bathrooms near the Jefferson house but they are on the outside of the house so you have to walk around. Near the bathrooms near the house they had demos of some items from back in the day such as you could write with a calligraphy pen. We did that and it was cool to do.I think this was a unique place to go to given its history. I dont really have any interest in going back but it was good for a one time visit. If you walk everything I think youll be here for 3 hours or so. There is a shuttle to take you from the visitor center to the Jefferson house. Also, the tours are timed so you get a ticket from the visitor center and then you can get on the shuttle. There is a farm shop gift shop place on the house grounds nearby the restrooms that you may want to check out for some goodies. They have a gift shop near the visitor center too that we checked out before we left. Enjoy your visit! Plenty of pictures of the landscape were the best part.
