This tour was not worth the visit. The lady who conducted the tour was hard hear, not super friendly, and she rushed the tour. On the main floor, she quickly told us a brief history of the house, but it was pretty vague. She sent us upstairs and said to let them know if we had any questions. The man upstairs didn’t bother to tell us anything about the rooms we looked at, didn’t really answer or know the answer to any questions and pretty much just rushed us. I left feeling like I would have learned more by pulling up Wikipedia. Not worth the time, which was about 15 minutes.

My 14-year-old daughter decided she wanted a taste of history while visiting downtown Charleston. The Choose Your Own Adventure option through the Charleston museum was perfect for her and I to discover these hidden treasures in downtown Charleston... Genius! 3 stops for $25!!We especially loved the enthusiasm of the young man on the third floor, please forgive me I dont remember his name, he was able to tell us that one of the paintings on the wall (of one of the original owners) of the house was actually painted by Samuel Morse, who invented Morse code!!! Who knew he was so multi-talented!

History is alive in this house built for one of the richest Charleston planters and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and used as a location for several nights stay by George Washington himself. Knowledgeable guides will point you in all the right directions and let you see the amazing craftsmanship of furniture makers and explain the fascinating lifestyle of the planters and their families.

A house where George Washington stayed for one night and the house owner, Thomas Heyward signed the independence declaration. It costs around $12 per head, and there are package tours including other establishments maintained by Charleston Museum. The guided tour takes less than half an hour. The house is not impressive from outside. Inside there is good collection of old charleston made wooden furnitures, exhibiting glorious cabinets, wine cooler etc. A letter exchanged between Heyward and G.Washington is displayed. Small backyard garden, adjacent living quaters fordomestic slaves and kitchen garden is in the backside.

I had the most wonderful tour of the Heyward-Washington House. I scrambled in for the last tour of the day at 4:30 pm and a lovely woman showed me through the house. She described the importance of the furniture and art pieces as they related to the historical time period. She welcomed questions and showed so much enthusiasm. This tour is great for all ages.

Worth the stop if youre a history buff and want to see a documented location where George Washington slept. Also a book cabinet that the Antique Roadshow valued as priceless. Before coming to Charleston do some research and check out the Charleston Heritage Passport. It will get you into 5 houses, 2 museums and 2 plantations. You pick it up at the visitors center on John St. (dont get sucked into other visitors centers that will be sales pitches) they are very helpful and really well informed.

This is one of several restored period houses in Charleston that are operated by a local historical society are open to the public. There is an admission fee, but that gets you a guided tour by a knowledgeable docent who describes the house, the early owners and their way of life. Probably not of interest to most children. Note that there is no restroom in the house, but the privy has a modern facility in the back yard.

This house doesnt give you any history of the people who lived there. They were plantation owners and one of them signed the declaration of independence. Oh, and george Washington stayed in their house for a week. The rest that they tell you about is the furniture. Thats it. Its not a bad place to visit, but for the price I would skip it.

We were lucky and were the only 2 with a very knowledgeable docent. Lots of history, art history, antique history, and cultural background. She gave us a real sense for the social protocols of colonial times. The antiques were very special, many I would consider national treasures. Also, an interesting view of where and how slaves worked and lived within a wealthy household. Thank you for the tour and commentary.
