Come early so you can spend a good half day here, and that still wont be enough time to see and read all the great information. Lots of mining history, with rocks, fossils, skeletons, taxidermy collection, geology information, local history, Nevada history, am armory, and more. Very interesting. Lots to see for everyone. I will have to come back and spend more time. Cheap to get in, but RICH in history, information, and awesome stuff!

Great museum! Our whole family enjoyed it. Its actually a very large museum and we spent an easy 2 hours there and enjoyed every minute. The basement underground mine exhibit was fun to explore. The main floor was dedicated to the Carson City mint and mining history. They also had a large native american exhibit. Upstairs they had really cool exhibits that varied: historical living in Nevada (from old cars and dental chairs to China dolls), mining and minerals of Nevada (including what the metal and minerals were used for), military test site, casinos and gambling, animal life of Nevada, and even ancient life of Nevada (woolly mammoth and ancient sea creatures), etc.

Great museum to visit, lots of history. The mint portion of the tour was great, seeing the old coin press that still works from the 1870. The guys working the press were well educated on explaining how they use to mint the silver morgan dollars from Carson City. The mint does not produce Morgan Silver dollars currently. I was able to purchase a silver blank from their gift shop, this is know as a blank planchette which can be pressed by the machine into a commemorative coin. A great souvenir.

Impressive to say the least, been wanting to visit for some time, and finally stopped here on the way back from my Yosemite road trip, this last week of Sept. 2019.Very well displayed collections covering about every social aspect of the past Nevada regions history. As a Mining & Western history buff really enjoyed the 3 hours I was there. Was hoping to see more of the excavated dies found & donated generously by the contractor. The #1 coin press & 10,000 ounce mint beam scale are beautiful, collections of raw CC coins nice but hard to make out behind steel bars, coins are more appreciated close up, but what can they do, much value there and impressive to say the least! The full skeleton of the 17,000 year old Woolly Mammoth & rearing horse + amazing story behind how they perished really amazing.Wonderful collection of rock specimens, and there chemical matrix makeups very interesting.Folks, make this a must stop on your next vacation.Great job Carson City! From Bill @ Horseshoe Coins & Antiques, Blaine Harbor, Wash.

This museum features the local mining and mint histories. There is a mock mine one can walk through and a very informative demo was given of coin pressing on the only surviving150 plus year old machine. Museum goers can buy a blank silver planchet ($60 at this writing) and have it pressed as a commemorative coin. Coin press demos are given on Fridays, but check with the museum to verify. 109 of the 111 coins pressed by the mint with the CC mark is on display in a vault. The museum is gearing up for their official sesquicentennial event set for Feb. 4, 2020 and have replica 1870 coins for sale. This is a very unique and enjoyable museum.

Formerly the coin mint of Carson Nevada, the museum still hosts one of the original mints that is still occasionally used to mint commemorative coins. Adjacent to the mint is a vault that holds and displays an impressive collection of coins minted at the Carson mint. In keeping with the theme of coins, the museum annually hosts a large coin fair for sellers and collectors to gather and look at historic US coins. Upstairs are an impressive natural history exhibit (including a full-scale mammoth statue) and a collection of stuffed local wild life. The museum has expanded to a second building via a glass breeze-way, and nearly the entire museum wheelchair accessible. The exception being a lower-level recreation of a Nevada mine that showcases various mining techniques in a compelling and immersive experience. I would recommend visiting the museum on Nevada Day as the glass breeze-way has a great spot for viewing the parade.
