Despite all appearances, the museum is open. You have to walk through a gravel construction zone to get in and out, but once inside, its your quintessential museum. Exhibits extend to Hillary, but do not yet include Michelle Obama nor Melania Trump. The building itself is historic and beautiful.
Wonderful hidden treasure! We enjoyed earning the junior ranger badge here!
A great little museum stocked with interesting facts and memorabilia! The staff was super friendly and had an obvious love for the topics discussed in the museum.
First of all it is misnamed, it should be the Saxton-McKinley House since most of the memorabilia are from these 2 families. However, the house shows many fascinating aspects and our guide Carolin was very knowledgeable. You can park at their special parking spot. Press the button and they will give you a code to enter. The tour, however starts at the National First Ladies Library. Even if you have a National Park Pass, there will be a fee. Seniors pay $4 with pass.
This place is a hidden gem. Junior ranger program is great for the girls learning about the first ladies.
I was looking forward to visiting this museum and drove two hours to get there, only to find it closed due to the government shutdown. The closure wasn’t mentioned on their website or even the building sign, there was just a sign on the entrance to the parking lot. I encourage anyone wanting to visit to call ahead to make sure they’re open.
The childhood home of Ida McKinley, that was sold to several d6people when President William McKinley purchased it for a retirement home. They ended up living there during his presidency. The First Ladies Museum is a block down the road with items on display from the First Ladies of Ohio and a film about the First Ladies it is a beautiful place we enjoyed a lot.
Disappointing....not much there. Confusing because the education center(library) is down the street from the house open to tours, and when people go to the house first, they find it locked. Tickets to the house tour are sold at the education center, but its not posted anywhere.
The National First Ladies Museum was . . . okay or meh even. The home of First Lady Ida McKinley located next door to the museum was much better.Considering that the United States has 44 former First Ladies the collection and extent of this museum was paltry. This museum has extensive administrative personnel but not much in the way of museum and/or artifacts. The museum seems more like a dress and/or clothing repository and even at that many are facsimiles. The building in which the museum is located in, the 1895 City National Bank Building is much more interesting than the museum itself. Our three daughters were very dissapointed (ages 17, 14 & 11). It was they that wanted to go. They planned this trip. If you are in Canton for other reasons, then this would be an interesting side trip. We urge you not to plan to make this the sole purpose or reason for a trip, as we did.
Nice place to visit with friends and family. My cousin from Wisconsin who is disabled and I have been recovering from back surgery got stuck in the elevator halfway up. I couldnt sit down or move. I was very miserable during and after being rescued by the elevator company.
Very little about first ladies other than McKinley, but the tour of the house was interesting
Very informative about the 25th president and First Lady. Our tour guide was amazing, very knowledgeable!
Nice docents and beautiful home. they spend a lot of time talking about the Mckinleys home, life and marriage (so much more than the folks at the McKinley library) but not much on any of the other first ladies. The home is wonderfully restored, but it too did not belong to the McKinleys or any of the other first ladies. None the less, it was well done and the staff are very nice.
Really enjoyed our tour. If you like history and historical sites, youll like this tour.
Stephanie Sweany did a fantastic job leading our group thru the very informative tour !! I haved here in Canton all my 45 years & still learned thing that I did not know. Thank You Again Stephanie !!
It looks beautiful from the outside. There are a surprising amount of plaques around the building so I gave myself a self tour unfortunately it was closed when I got there.
Great small bank turned museum with the President McKinley home in a building with a parking deck in between. Gift shop, too. Rich in history. Lovely to see. A nice way to spend an afternoon.
Great tour guide -- she obviously loves history!
Great, knowledgeable staff. Enjoyed my visit, but unfortunately there were problems with an alarm and we couldnt go in the house
Just did the free museum, but it was very interesting
Interesting one of a kind museum. The displays were well done. I hope they continue to add more memorabilia from more first ladies.
Very interesting site.
Theres so much wasted potential here. The tour and the museum both really drastically under emphasize the importance of these women. I know thats not their intent but it still needs work.
Beautiful inside the auditorium!
The ladies here did a great job explaining everything to our group of over 60year olds as well as our under 10 year olds
Wonderful place to see so much herstory. Highly recommend.
The replication inaugural gowns are ok but not very exciting especially since Ive seen the originals at the Smithsonian. The museum itself, Ida McKinleys house, is also lacking anything unique or original artifacts, however the restoration is beautiful. Good if you are looking for something to do on a budget but not particularly interesting.
A rare miss by the National Park Service. No hours listed anywhere, closed on a Sunday during tourist season, and no one around. Basically save your effort and hit something else.
This place offers a very unique tour. Everyone is very friendly and knowledgeable. I absolutely love the McKinley House.
Interesting, but much smaller than I expected (only 1 room) & pretty much only has inauguration gowns. The tour of the Saxton house (included in entrance fee) was much more interesting.Note that there is free outdoor parking right next door to Saxton house. Parking in the garage next to the library will cost you around $8
This house is difficult to find and is an obscure house in the downtown area. The Park Service needs to do better and build a better tribute to our past first ladies.
Beautiful house but was hoping for more on first ladies.
The docents and tour guides are very well-informed. I learned a lot and the buildings themselves were beautiful! The Saxton House tour was very interesting, Ida Saxton McKinley is not a first lady that normally shows up in history, but she probably should! Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area!
Very accommodating for handycaped friendly knowledgeable guide
Not my thing well done though
This should be called the library of first lady Ida McKinley
Best ever
Informative
Its was closed
Treasure
Keeping history alive
The library is very nice
A must see when visiting Canton.
A growing National treasure.
Neat small museum that has a historical house as well to tour (the house is currently closed, but museum is open). Mostly political items, but enough personal artifacts to even it out. Give yourself an hour.
