Due in large part to the very charming and knowledgeable tour guide, this small historical site far surpassed my expectations. What I loved is how the guide traced Ethan Allen’s personal experience back to the founding of the state of Vermont. Being from New York, I admit knowing very little about the 14 State in the nation. However, I came away from this tour filled with many facts and details that are still with me hours later. A perfect family-friendly experience. Very COVID safe, too.
Wonderful tour of the home and grounds. We were the only two people on the tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and very sweet. At the end we got to keep a bouquet of flowers from the garden! Loved the experience!
A wonderful gem of Burlington. Enjoy the history, a picnic, a walk, a run, a bike ride, bbq, garden, hang, swim in the river, forage.....this is one of those place I love about Burlington. One of the most fascinating things is too, learn about the black snake affair where locals were smuggling goods up to Canada using the Winooski River and were caught and had a shootout with authorities and ended up with a hanging in Burlington right downtown. #history
The tour was very informative. We all had a great time including the kids.
This was a fun activity. It would be great for a family or even an independent activity. We enjoyed learning about the history of Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys. Our tour guide, Keith, was incredibly knowledgeable. The grounds were absolutely beautiful and picturesquein summer, as they would be any time of year. Highly recommended! We spent a little over an hour there and it is very close to everything in Burlington.
An interesting historical landmark. As a tourist destination, you could definitely do worse if youre interested in the colonial history of New England. The facility is nice, the staff is helpful, and there is an informative multimedia presentation at the end, as well as a gift shop area which sells neat little trinkets and books on Ethan Allen and the 1700s era.The only downside is that, while the house is interesting - Ethan Allen didnt really live in it for too long a time. Maybe two years at most. And most of the interior is just reproduction items and not anything Ethan Allen actually owned.Still, the grounds are beautiful, and there is lots of information available at the location to make the trip worth it.
Quite, beautiful and friendly. Its next to Vermont community garden where you can really see the locals come together for sustainable environment and food of course!
Spectacular scenery and hiking trails
Lovely park right outside downtown Burlington. Guess are knowledgeable, no crowds to soak of. Grounds are extensive, trails bisect the park so you can walk to the river or other points of interest.
What an amazing piece of American history. Well worth the time for a visit.
The Homestead is beautiful, the historic areas well maintained and the history of the Homestead and its sites are clearly explained by the docents. You may also catch some of the living historians (reenactors) dressed in period garb demonstrating their skills. Last but not least, every single person met was knowledgeable, welcoming and friendly.
A very knowledgeable guide. The area is well kept
I only used a small section for a quick dirt trail jog by the museum. Nice flat ground views. Looks great for bicycles with lots of paved trails too
Clearly well preserved and in the essence that Allen himself would have liked. To visit youll have to pay under ten dollars but they are well spent. Entering this residence, youll get a glimpse of late 18th century Vermont and if you engage in a conversation with the museum personel, you will inquire on their vast knowledge of Allens life and Vermonts past.
Great area with some basic, but nice, walking trails that follow the river bed. Theres a community garden, large feilds, and of course the homestead. Dogs are welcome on leash. There is no charge to wonder the grounds.
I absolutely loved visiting here! My husband and I really enjoyed taking the tour and our tour guide John was very knowledgeable. I highly recommend visiting here and its super cheap too!
Beautiful property with so many gardens and walking trails. Simply lovely to walk around.
Very knowledgeable volunteers. When we went there were some folks making linen from flax and walked us through the process
Great tour from Sky. If yourea history buff. Youll love this.
Great hiking trails and very friendly and informative staff!
Tours of the house are guided. Volunteers speak about the house and some of the experiences living at the time. The house needs a lot of restoration work. Cant touch anything! The museum on- site is very nice and informative. Plan on spending twice as much in museum versus the house itself.
This historic site offers a view into the day to day life of revolutionary war leader and hero Eathan Allen. One can learn about his war time experiences and the making of our nations 14th state.I found that walking the grounds, neatly maintained and thoughtfully restored, brought me closer to a figure of whom I had only known through reading. Highly recommended for Revolutionary War history enthusiasts. The site can be rented for moderate sized events.
I had some time to kill between when I arrived and the rest of my party arrived at the Burlington, VT airport. I looked for something local to do. The Ethan Allen Homestead was only 20 minutes from the airport. This tour was one of the best tours that I had been on in a while. My tour guide - Bob - sat me down inside the theater/remake of a tavern in the visitor center. He gave me about 25 minutes worth of history on Ethan Allen. It was really detailed. Im a history major and I was impressed. Then he took me over to the Ethan Allen Homestead and proceeded to go through each of the rooms and describe the items found there and how they were used during Allens time. The building and the grounds were in impeccable shape. Bob was very knowledgeable and answered questions thoroughly.A great family outing. Nice gift shop and artifacts to view.
Great guide, took her time and was really informative.
My boyfriend had made plans for us to tour the Ethan Allen Homestead during our stay in Burlington. I went in with little to no expectation and left pleasantly surprised. It turned out being my favorite tour we did. Keith, our tour guide, made the trip and experience worth it. He brought the history of Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys to life and his enthusiasm was contagious. Much appreciated. Highly recommend!
Took an awesome class tonight, taught by Fred Wiseman. Excited for the next one.
Excellent Historical site. Kids loved it
Very informative! Enjoyed it!
Nice museum. Cool to see the original house. Take the Peninsula Trail hike when u r here.
I wish I would have discovered the excellent programming that occurs at Ethan Allen Homestead before I retired last year. However, having said that, I sure am glad that, quite by accident, I read about a lecture occurring there on a Sunday afternoon in my local newspaper, the Colchester Sun. Recently, Ethan Allen Homestead hosted Christopher Wren, a former New York times editor and journalist, who talked about his book on Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys. Not long after that a series started describing the history of the Abenaki people in the region; it continues, one day a month, for four months. Yesterday, we listened as a professor from the University of Vermont talked about his books on the travails of slaves taken to the Maritime provinces by the Loyalists who fled our country immediately after the revolutionary war. Go to their website and you can find out how to get on their mailing list and youll receive email notifications about what the next lectures are going to be about and you can also look at their calendar of events. Sadly, I have to admit Ive never actually toured the homestead. Ive only gone into the lecture hall in the store. This summer when the homestead is open again to the public Ill be sure to tour the homestead itself.
Quick and interesting historic site. Worth a visit. Great guides.
Great tour guide.
I had a wonderful guide. So many great stories
I used to live here when Ethan Allen was there. It was beautiful then and still is now.
Very informative. Good background of Vermont history
Family learned a lot here.
Its very informative!
A nice effort, interesting colonial house, excellent guide.
Technically not off leash but still great for dogs
Great place for a walk
This place is super cool
We unfortunately came when much of the walking trails were flooded, but still enjoyed our time and learned a little more about Vermonts past. Next time Im sure well get a little more out of the trails here.
Hidden gem of a historical site. Small museum and house of Ethan Allen. Also great hiking trails in the Intervale region of Burlington.
Excellent docent that was able to share stories of Ethan Allen that showed the eccentricities of the man.
Great place to walk a pooch
Small but interesting
Beautiful location and the tour guide was second to none! Definitely worth a visit. Go for the tour and stay for a walk.
I love walking and exploring this área with my doggie
Very important history. Great tour guide
Friendly, knowledgeable folks
Very nice :-D
Interesting but not for kids. Its a tour with long explanations of every thing. Tour guide was clearly irritated that my kids were there.
You can see how people lived in the 1600 and 1700s.
Has a beautiful walk to the tower with amazing view at the top
We arrived after it was closed for the season however the director was on the premises and gave us a tour anyway. I learned more about American history during our visit than in any class I ever took.
