I took the pistol course in April. We spent a few hours in the classroom and took a test to get the paper cert. We never went to a range, as they advertised, and definitely did not learn, for me is was to shoot a pistol. I have called and spoken to them, plus emails up to 6 times because we never had range time. I completely understand given covid. BUT they advertised being open and training people. I have followed up via phone and email so many times, now giving up since its October and Im going to pay to go somewhere else. In addition the man who trains people is loud about his politics. I actually left the room to get away from it. There has been no communication on Bay Area Firearms side for partial refund or really any communication at all. Also I find how they are speaking to people that are reviewing them pretty disrespectful. There was false advertising on what they are offering. Those of us who came to Bay Area Firearms were misled and should be speaking up.EDIT: The owners response below is a LIE. I spoke to him on the phone and he said he was scheduling people by email. I never received anything from them for follow up, followed up enough times and never heard back. Its bad business practice.Anyone reading this can make their own opinions of course. But I encourage you to take your money/business elsewhere.

Owner claim this is a fraud review so I uploaded the solid proof. The certificate they gave me, with the instructors signature on it. haha. : )Its totally a waste of time and waste of money.I went to this place few years ago and took a course called Three Gun Shoot. I cant remember exactly the instructors name, probably Richard.(Actually Harold. See CORRECTION below) He came in very late. Instead giving a detailed instructions on each gun, he pretty much just did a briefing of what each gun does. Then he took me to a shooting range to practice. I think I understand English just fine but he just couldnt simply explain how to aim a target correctly and then shoot with a hand gun. Nor explain anything about the hand gun itself. Then we shot about 10 shots of pump and then 50 shots or a AR-15. And thats it. Thats all you get with $600. When shooting the AR-15, I was asking how I can adjust the gun if theres wind. He basically refuse to teach anything and just ask me to shot the rest of the ammo. I dont know what kind of instruction is this. The worst part, this guy was hanging over...He fall asleep in the lounge in that shooting range right after I finish shooting the rifle. I would suggest anyone thats interested in learning about guns to start with taking the hunters education program. You learn much more than just go shooting a bunch of bullets.--Correction--Just found the certificate that Bay Are Firearms gave me. I uploaded to Google as a proof for the review. I also attached the credit card charge statement. Looks like the instructors name is Harold Johnson. The owner replied to my review and called this review is a fraud and asked me to delete it right away. Well, here you go. I just feel everyone has the right to review their experience. I should probably have done this few years earlier, such that less people paid for this overpriced training. I only trained with this Harold Johnson, so no comments on other instructors. The 7 hours of training they claimed on their website, is actually much less. In my experience, less than 4.5 hours, that includes driving to the shooting range. If you absolutely have to train with this place, try to avoid this instructor...If thats a real name. : 0

I think the owner has some issues he need to deal with. He is calling all the reviewers lie and is short minded. You will be doing yourself a favor not going here. There are plenty of others out there.Update: You have time to respond, why dont you take that time to make your business better? This is my own experience with the Owner. This is not a lie. ZERO stars for the owner alone..worst way to run a business. I own multiple businesses myself, I take feed back positively.

DO NOT COME. Their organization is a disaster. We signed up for a AR-15 course. Initially, Scott said this will be $165 and 5 hours duration. At the date of the class, we came and they offered us the pistol course. Also at that day, we were notified that the range class and the lecture class are separate. We need to sign up for the range again. The date of the range class was 3 weeks later. We drove 1.5 hours to the range in Pleasanton. When we was waiting in the super long line of the range, we were told that they only offer pistol today, again. Here I tell anyone who wants to come: DO NOT COME. This business is a total lie. Best of all he was patient and willing to indulge newbie and teenage boy questions. It was an excellent day!

This place needs to figure out how to set expectations with its customers. My boyfriend and I took the beginner course. The course description says its 1.5hrs of instruction and 1hr of shooting. Sounds pretty good. What they dont tell you is that the shooting range is actually in Santa Clara, which is a 30min drive South from the city. They also dont tell you that, if youre not taking the test (to buy a gun) after instruction, you will have to wait for an hour at the shooting range while everyone else finishes the test and gets their information put into the system. They also sold us ammo for $20 per box, which costs $15 at the range. Wth. All together, this lasted 9am-2:30pm.Its also worth mentioning that our original booking was for the previous weekend, which they had no record of, so we had to rebook.

Terrible instructor and complete waist of time! Very negative experience. The owner is an instructor himself, he is very negative guy, complaining about everything: government, laws, customers, printer, software provider, internet - everything!!! The course takes about 5-6 hours: 1h - lesson and practice with firearms, 1 hour filling up and printing docs/certificates, 2 hours to get back/forth to a range (yeah, it’s not nearby and nobody will tell you this), 1 hour waiting in line at range, 30 minutes shooting. Oh, and be prepared for some extra payments, that also nobody will warn you upfront. Never go there!! There are plenty much more professional courses, where you get better experience for your time and money.

We went as a twosome for a double-weapon training (a pistol and an AR-15). Both Scott and our instructor Jade were extremely knowledgeable -these guys are all about teaching you the correct technique, encouraging good habits and ensuring you handle the weapons safely. We first spent a couple of hours practising with dummies and then moved on to the range. Jade was looking after us very well, making sure we each got plenty of his time and attention. He didnt mind spending the extra time when it was not practical for both of us to shoot at the same time, even though it meant the training finished much later than wed originally planned.Id only recommend that you discuss all the details before you book, which we didnt. It now makes perfect sense but at the time we were very surprised that the range entrance fee and the ammunition were not included in the price of the training. We also assumed we booked a private session just for the two of us, but it was open to others as well -in the end, no-one else showed up so we ended up having a private session anyway, which was nice. It was also a little chaotic getting the training certificates, but everyone was really trying to help and it all worked out fine in the end. All in all, those are minor comments and I couldnt recommend Bay Area Firearms more. These guys are excellent and well definitely be back for the advanced training! As a side note, we met some shooters at the range that clearly didnt have proper shooting technique and made basic mistakes handling the weapons. Watching them, we were very glad we decided to have the training with Bay Area Firearms.

I took the pistol certification class. NOT as advertised. 1.5 hours of classroom time (I feel i did learn enough in that time). 1 hour at the range. But I still had to go take my Handgun Safety Certification test somewhere else for another fee. Not to mention we went all the way to San Lorenzo to shoot. That was definitely not in the brochure!I would have given 2 stars except the hands on instruction from Harold was great and made me (a first time shooter) feel very comfortable around a firearm.I dont know why they call this a certification class but it was worth my time (even though we drove across the bay to shoot). Probably not worth the money.

Had a great experience there last Sunday. My instructor, Anthony, was extremely helpful, responsive and professional. I have absolutely zero experience but hes very patient with me in the classroom and at the range. I was lucky that I was the only student at that day, so for concepts I didnt get at the first time, I kept asking and Anthony explained them thoroughly. We booked for the beginners pistol course and it just so happened that nobody else had booked so it was basically like having our own private lesson. Scott is the man! Super knowledgeable, practical and he has a good sense of humor. We were both first time shooters and had never handled a firearm before. Scott did a great job making everything clear and feel safe. We came in for the night class where there wasnt supposed to be a live fire portion but since it was her birthday he did us a big favor and scored us some range time. I just completed a Home Defense course instructed by Scott and I literally had a blast! First, there is the firearms education and training in a classroom setting. Scott particularly emphasized the tremendous responsibility of being a gun owner. Next, Scott took only an average shooter and taught me to be almost one with the gun. Scotts training style is not the Basic Training screaming that I experienced before but more the calm, humorous, and yet very serious walk through the basics of firing the weapon. By the time I was finished, I felt very confident with the weapon and I am looking forward to spending more time at the gun range. Thanks Scott!!

I arranged to start off my brothers bachelor party here. Most of us were coming from out of town so we had to take the train and taxis to get there. I arranged the plans with Scott to get 20-30 min of instruction followed by an hour or two of range time. I told him we had to plan things around the train schedule to get us to the events planned after. I paid Scott a deposit of $550 on my credit card for the range/instruction time. When we arrived we did not see a range but I figured it was indoors. Once we got settled we got 45 minutes of instruction that included a lot of racist/off putting comments. After the instruction was done he asked where our cars were to get us to the range. I reminded him that we were not from California and arrived by train. He said they usually dont assist with transportation, but would try to help out. We piled into two cars, which did not have enough seats for everyone, to make the ONE HOUR TRIP to the range. This was the first I heard that the range was in a separate area. If we had gone to the range it would have given us 45 min to make the at least 1 hour trip back to the city in time for our dinner reservations. We did not go to the range but instead got dropped off at the train station. The other instructor apologized for Scotts deception and said it was not the first time! I told Scott up front about our time restrictions but he never said a word about the travel needed. Luckily I was able to cancel my payment through my credit card so Scott did not scam me out of my money. I only hope this review can save others from the hassle I went through.

Most of their five stars are fake!Today I was tired, in noisy public space and just wanted to ask whether I can shot handgun if I am 19. After he answered me, he asked me when I would come and I answered Saturday. Then he started to ask me for credit card information, which makes me feel unsafe. He did not mention reservation at all and if he did, could only happen after. The worker kept asking me in phone for my credit card number expiration date and 3 digits security number, I hesitated to give him my security number in phone but he still kept asking toughly. My memory is consistent from asking toughly to hang up my call, which means even he had explained, it should be short, not replicated and before his toughly asking. Then he said I was not serious to come there and hanged up my call. I planed to go with my friends to spend 300 dollars each there but this customer service suddenly changed my plan. I am gonna tell all my friends not to go there. After i pose the review, I receiveSeveral intimidation text(including racism),which I had posed on yelp. Just finished my private lessons with Scott and I cannot be more satisfied. I had never been into firearms but decided it was time to get past my absolute fright of weapons by educating myself. Scott had the knowledge and patience needed to familiarize and educate me with pistols, shotguns and rifles. Safety First! I even found out I am fairly proficient at the range. Both Scott and later Jade (at the outdoor range) were great at teaching me the skills needed to get past the surrounding noise and rising heart rate when I stepped up for my first live shots. The only draw back is the fact that they do not have their own indoor and/or outdoor range. You have to go to a nearby range but that does not deter from the personal attention they give you.I am proud to say I did a whole lot better than I expected and feel confident enough to return to the range on my own, thanks to Bay Area Firearms!

I am a returning customer and tended to ignore his fantastic stories and strange points of views. But recently Scott was extreamly offensive and as such I will never return to this school. If you read the comments in this forum you will see that this is a recurring issue. I bought the Google coupon and then I read the reviews here and at Yelp and got a bit worried. We (my wife and I) just completed the class (both class day and range day) and it was really, really good. We loved the instructors style, scheduling flexibility as well as the equipment (aka guns :-)). Specifically, the instructor, Tom, was a great trainer and even made seemingly boring gun safety part of the class really fun. Range part of the class worked out pretty well and Tom helped us fix a few problems we had while shooting a Glock. It is very likely we will be taking another class with them, likely tactical pistol class.

Poor value for money and poor customer service. Youll end up paying a classroom fee, ammo fee, range fee and gas to drive around the bay area to get from classroom to range (not close at all). Extremely expensive for what you get. Was given a kid barely outside of his teenage years as a trainer. Owner a little too upfront with his political and religious beliefs. 2 of us sharing an AR-15 that jammed after each shot (terrible condition we were told by enthusiasts at range) so with cease-fires took ages to get through 120 bullets.

Now I call during operational hour and no one picks up or hangs up on me or sends me straight to voicemail. How is it possible to only have one number to this place and not be able to get any service for a refund. This is the most hassle I have ever gotten. I think the Reviews here are fabricated. I took 2 courses, AR-15 and Long range rifle course(paid upfront). The class room time we spend is not very explanatory. It seems like everyone is in a rush, but not sure why; the class states that it needs 6-8 hrs of time on their website. which in our case Classroom is hardly 1 hour and the range time is another hour. (if you calculate the driving to and fro to the gun range, may be add up another hour, no one is instructing you here, unless you drive with the instructor: sarcasm) I spent total of $500 with Range fees+ ammo. Instructor Thomas is a good one, its not his fault, for our class he has been put in as a sub at the last minute, as the owner SCOTT who suppose to teach the class couldnt make it.For the Long range rifle, Its partly my fault that I dint remind myself of the class, this rarely happens to me when I mess up my calender dates. I have been charged an extra $80 on top of $150 I paid, because the instructor was not happy. The class suppose to start at 8 AM, I called them up 30 minutes after asking that I can still be there in 15 min, we can still start the class but cut it short ( given the class is 8 hours as they mentioned on the Website), but the owner SCOTT said he is not happy that people missing classes and he is not going to decrease the standard of teaching by just cutting the class short. and he should start charging them $80 for missing or just fortify the whole $150 fees. I felt like he just used my lateness to charge me and fine me, which I gladly paid since its my fault. I also felt this business is a very dishonest and not straight forward, they dont mention a lot on the website about the structure of the classes. He used strong tone against me and made me feel like crap on top that I already missed the class. He probably got the idea of charging $80 starting with me, and When I rescheduled my class the next week, the owner SCOTT who taught the class barely spent 30 min of instructions in the class and started talking about his personal life with other instructors..When I was there, I asked the owner SCOTT politely why dont they set up an automated call reminder for their customers as the set up dates are at least couple of weeks apart( like the dentists do), people forget reminders, he bluntly said we dont have time to do it, I said its just an automated service, It doesnt take your time.Just the total 2 hrs I spent there, i have seen a lot of confusion and choas, Customers returning that they set up a class and the instructor dint show up etc.. NO PROFESSIONALISM at all. I also overheard from other instructors that owner SCOTT doesnt pay them for their services, he simply give them certifications which they are not too happy about.Thomas is a good instructor but the rifle scopes are messy, All my shots are consistent but not on the target. Thomas is generous to let me use some of this AR-15 rounds in my second class of Long Rifle instruction.find another school, i dont recommend this to anyone. I would rate this 1 star to bring down the rating, i think people are being bluffed.

The end of the day earned me a basic pistol NRA certificate. Going back tomorrow for continued training, which will get me the home defense certificate. At the end of the 18-hour training which will include legal and California specific legal, there will be a test, and if passed, the CCW certificate - not the permit, thats a different story.Scott is friendly, knowledgeable, and extremely professional. He even helped me customize my Glock with a couple of parts to improve the handling of the thing. The school has different types of training programs for all levels, and I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about acquiring, or has acquired a firearm, as well as experts who wish to hone their skill and learn a few new tricks.
