Great place to go bird watching. Keep in mind the auto-tour is just that. Water ways are only open to hunters during hunting season unless you kayak/canoe on the actual Bear River off a boat ramp about a half-mile before the auto-tour.

Although this is a bird refuge, I saw only one bird. Maybe it is an off time of year. Utah doesnt really seem like the type of place birds would really want to hang out anyway. Ill keep trying back as this location is only a few miles from my residence. As I mentioned, only a single bird, but there was a strange portly little man dressed in full on safari gear wandering around with binoculars attempting to call birds by whistling the theme song from The Andy Griffith Show. Ill try again in a month or so.

We enjoyed our time driving through the Refuge on the auto tour loop. We didnt see a large amount or variety of birds. Mostly small shore birds, ducks, cranes, and geese, but there were also quite a few pelicans, which were cool to see. So glad we took the time to go. Im sure it would be even more enjoyable in the Spring or Fall when there are more birds and the weather is a bit cooler.

The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, a nearly 80,000 acre area of open water and mudflats is a beautiful refuge for over 250 species of birds. This area is beautiful in every season of the year. The James Hansen Wildlife Education Center with interactive exhibits is a great place to learn more about the migratory birds that fly and nest is this refuge. This bird refuge is a wonderful place for bird watching and photography. The drive around the loop is nice even with few birds in the winter months. A great place to visit!!

If a place could be a soulmate, this is mine. Magical is the only word that comes to mind. The $12 million dollar visitors center is awesome for kids and quite a remarkable feat (although hours are limited, be sure to check before you visit). After the visitor center, head 12 miles west to the actual refuge where you will find a 12 mile, one-way loop. Some days it is not uncommon to see 35+ species of birds. Nesting season is always fun, but birds are here year round and a visit is always fruitful. I have visited several national refuges and this one is just the very best. A must see.

It’s a bird safari! Bring the kids! You’ll be surprised at how many different birds and other animals you’ll see. A little taste of what this country was like before we bulldozed everything. Keep the windows rolled up. Swarms of insects, some of which are quite vicious.

The bird refuge is always a good stop. The Visitor Center is well cared for, and the staff are knowledgeable. If you don’t have the 2-3 hours that it takes to go out on the auto loop, just go outside the Visitor Center- there’s always some interesting birds there too.Tip: Let the staff in the Visitor Center know if there’s a particular bird that you are looking for. If that species has been spotted recently, the staff can tell you where to look for it and often have helpful hints for spotting different species, or telling them apart.

Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge is located in Box Elder County and is a 14 mile loop road. This is a great place to see many types of birds. Western and Clarks grebes are plentiful. In the winter tundra swans can also be viewed. There are times though that hunting is allowed and the birds hide. The loop road is dirt, but is very drive able with a passenger car as long as the roads are dry or frozen. The visitors center is located just off I-15, it is not open on Sundays. Call ahead to the visitors center if you want to visit the center. The loop road is open 7 days a week.

We went to the bird refuge for Swan Day in March. There weren’t any swans up close (bring binoculars or a telephoto lens) but it was still so peaceful and rejuvenating with the panoramic Wasatch mountain views, blue water, and golden marsh. You drive one-way on a dirt road through the bird refuge. There are two platforms you can stop at and also a few pull-offs. Its perfect for landscape or nature photography, but we also found a lot of beautiful locations for family photo shoots! Note: the visitor center is closer to town just off the freeway, so you can stop there before or after your visit to the bird refuge. Be sure to check their hours before you go. We missed them but plan to go back when theyre open.

This is a great place to be, whether out on the ponds or at the visitors center itself. My kids school had some fieldwork at the visitors center I got to attend and it was really neat. Ive been out more often chasing waterfowl during hunting season but I plan to go back more often during the off-season just to watch and possibly photograph the amazing variety of birds they get passing through. Its a really awesome and serene place to reconnect with the outdoors and you get some stunning views of the surrounding mountain ranges, mostly during sunrise and sunset but all hours of the day are enjoyable out there. The auto-loop around the ponds is a great way to see a lot of wildlife within the comforts of a car, Id recommend further exploration outside of a vehicle but if youre short for time or just cant walk too far for any reason, its a cool way to see a lot of it.
