Saw the original Phantom of the Opera today with LIVE ORGAN accompaniment for the whole movie . Incredible organist Tom Helms, incredible Mighty Wurlitzer! We always go to White Christmas, have only missed a year or two the past 35 years and always enjoy the sing-along with house organist Gary Jones. It isnt Christmas season for us until weve been to The Alabama for W.C. But hearing the organ provide the sound track for a silent movie was something else. Also loved the pre-show with a few ghouls and a thundering rendition of Toccata and Fugue. The volunteers and staff were first class as always.Definitely the top treasure in Bham.

This theater is just fun!! Ive been here many times over the years but most recently the Christmas movies shown each December are a relaxing, easy, entertaining way to share your favorite movies with friends, family, or a date night out. Arrive early!Great acoustics for concerts when the sound for the show is well done. I recently saw Jack Whites band, The Raconteurs, and I was impressed at how perfect the acoustics and sound were for such a loud concert.Overall - a great experience!

My wife and I loved this theatre. The atmosphere and the ushers were awesome. Be sure to get there early for your big night, there is only one way in so it could take some time. There are several bars inside, so you dont have to go to the first one you see. We loved this place and intend to see more shows here, when available.

This is always such a great venue. It has the old theatre charm and there really isnt a bad seat in the house. We prefer the floor or side mezzanine seating if we get the chance to go to a concert or play. Only negative is bathrooms are either in the basement or all the way up stairs.

One of the best things to see if youre from out of town, and one of the best places to go if youre a local. Ive been going here for years and nothing beats the aesthetic appeal everywhere you look, or the always polite staff. Such a nostalgic atmosphere that you truly feel the history from a time period that we never got to experience! ALSO Wizard of Oz, Cartoon Matinee, and Disney Classics, AND SING-A-LONGS with Big Bertha (pipe organ) top as our favorites at our Alabama Theather! A GREAT experience and priceless MEMORY each and every visit!

Beautiful and historic, the Alabama theatre is a great place to visit. I saw the Raconteurs most recently. The dress circle is a great place to sit for both economy of price and view. Just because the venue is classy doesnt mean you can avoid the typical loud, drunk, dancing middle aged woman though ;D

My first time & it was a beautiful venue. We saw Jackson Browne. Ticketmaster wont let me pull my tickets up or I would list my seat #s. We sat on the bottom in the very back on the lefthand side. It was very convenient as a door was right beside us but we were the end of the row that ended shorter than the regular rows so we were the only ones I saw use that door. We could see & hear everything beautifully. The concessions moved very quickly. The bathrooms (in the basement) were very big & clean. We got there early & bar hopped (walking) beforehand. All of the ushers & employees of the Alabama Theatre were nice & helpful. I would definitely recommend this venue & plan on returning!!

The Alabama Theater is the oldest in Alabama. It has been beautifully restored. Starting with the lit sign outside and the entering the theatre you get the feeling youve stepped back in time. The carved wood and the acoustics that lend that regal sound makes you stop and imagine the original opening night of this majestic theatre. Then Big Bertha the organ so lovingly named rises up out of the floor. The organ master tells a little history of the theatre and organ. Then plays and we sing along on this night it was Christmas carols. As we wait for the movie White Christmas to begin the smells of the popcorn popping wafts in from the entry way. We had popcorn, soda, hotdogs, and candy for all of us on our group. The lights dim and the curtain parts to display this huge movie screen. The sound in the theatre is simply amazing. It makes other theatres wish they could be so melodious. Let me tell you if you have not experienced it for yourself you havent experienced a real theatre ever. I cant describe how awe inspiring it is enough. This is something that you need to experience for yourself. While your there take the time to look at it and marvel at the ornate design for yourself.

I used to go to Alabama Theater every Christmas with my Mama, daughter, sister, best friend, and a bunch of other family members and friends to see Its a Wonderful Life. The only movie my Mama ever wanted to see. She would make fresh pralines that would melt in your mouth and put them in baskets and make sure that there was enough to go around. We would meet and eat somewhere before we would all pile in cars together to ride to Birmingham to the Beautiful Alabama Theater. We always got there in time for the sing-along with the organ. The Alabama Theater is like stepping back in time with the beautiful light fixtures and the pop up organ out of the stage. It is just breathtaking. My Mama died in October 2011 and I went a few times without her, but its just not the same. Though a group does continue to go. I will never forget the first time I went and stepped foot inside the Alabama Theater, that memory will stay with me forever.

While we weren’t here for a production or a show. My company was renting the theater for a video which our corporate was filming. The staff were exceptional and extremely accommodating to our schedule that was changing. Glenny was our main contact who was an absolute delight. She helped the out of town corporate crew with everything they needed and provided us with so much insight to the history of the theater. She gave us so much information that we had no idea about. She even took us across the street to the Lyric to give us a tour and a history lesson. If you are considering using this for any event, I would highly recommend it. A big shoutout to Glenny for all the help she gave to us during this time!!

There’s no place like the Alabama Theatre! It truly is “the showplace of the south!” This gorgeous, historic theatre has been completely restored to the glory of its heyday. The theatre itself is spacious with tiered balconies to accommodate a large audience. They have special events - concerts, weddings, etc, in addition to a classic film series, Christmas movie season, and much more. The theatre’s 17th street sign (original to the building and removed in 1957) was recently replaced, making it even more spectacular. Concessions are inexpensive and classic, along with a bar offering mixed drinks. The opulence of this place is something that’s rare to see in today’s modern age, a throwback to stylish luxury. Visiting is a real treat, and I do so often. You’ll also find plenty of lots and street parking when you come, but do arrive early and buy tickets well before any event or movie as they sell out fast!

It was quite interesting to learn about all the musicians who had recorded there. The last time I went was in 1977 to watch Billy Joel, I think.Ladys of the night were walking the streets back then which seemed odd to me back then but I found out it was common. Its a whole different atmosphere now. Ill be going back soon to see some movies. If the staff reads this Id like to thank you all for such a great evening.

We went tonight for a showing of National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. We arrived 30 minutes before showtime. The venue was completely full and people were saving most of the available seats with coats and purses. Some people had an entire row saved. We couldnt even hardly find two adjoining seats, and we had a party of five. A fight (shouting, not punching) broke out in the audience over seats at one point. I support the theater but they are going to have to figure out how to have assigned seats or fix the crowd control situation.

Beautiful theater but very poorly built seating wise. I attended the 85 South Comedy show and although I had a good time listening to the jokes, I could not see them. This beautiful, historic theatre was built in 1927 and seems to retain the splendor that was originally intended for its guests at that time. Everything from the entry-way to the bathrooms has antique finishes and fixtures. The seating is comfortable and padded, which is nice, and really most seats have a pretty decent view until you start getting into the upper part of the highest balcony, when it can be a strain to see. The concessions have a reasonable amount of snacks, candies, sodas and water, and even a small selection of alcoholic beverages. Since weve been here for a symphony orchestra concert and a dance recital, I can honestly say its one of my favorite locations for any type of theatrical entertainment.
