Interesting park with lots of stairs. We played badminton at the center where theres a concrete portion. Beware of rocks and broken glass, though.

Great little park, oddly shaped, heavily shaded, and the paths are like an mc escher drawing.

Fun paths to climb (lots of stairs), places to sit. Not a big place but space enough to get a little peace and commune with nature.

An intricate, beautiful urban park with great trails. Located just where the Berkeley Hills approach the flats, the terrain and vegetation here are interestingly varied, and slightly mysterious. A lot of water moves through the park, both in its Creek and in the slopes which drain the hills above, so vegetation is lush. Theres a good-sized but intimate outdoor amphitheater, the original home of the California Shakespeare Company (now out in Orinda), which is a wonderful place to hear the occasional piece of opera, music, or theater.

John Hinkel is a beautiful park for hikes in the pathways along the side of the canyon. Even better, it is a wonderful place to see a play in the summer. In past years Cal Shakes (then Berkeley Shakespeare Festival) performed here from the early 1970s to the early 1990s, before moving to their fancy new digs in Orinda. Later years saw Shotgun Players, Womens Will, Open Opera, and Theatrefirst. Most recently Actors Ensemble of Berkeley and Inferno Theatre have been regularly performong here in the summer. No bathrooms, however, except in the summer when performances are in session, and the playground equipment has been removed, though scheduled to be replaced this Fall.

Cool trails, nicely wooded shade, and an interesting amphitheater -- Im in. The playground is also entertaining in an abandoned horror show kind of way.

Original home of Berkeley Shakespeare troupe, now the California troupe. Neighborhood streets are South and North Hampton and Somerset. Many local home sport a Tudor style!
