It has been flooded for 2 years. Meanwhile development continues on east side river front. Bet Mrs Rowley would be sad.

Not really contiguous with any of the other riverwalks during most of the year. Nothing but a pavilion and a decent sized playground. Go south to the next park for a better riverwalk and beyond to the arboretum for a better experience.

Some parts are beautiful, and its a nice place to relax. The roads need some work, and something needs to be done to prevent the ever-present areas of minor flooding.

Bay Citys Veterans Memorial Park is a diverse collection of recreational facilities and public open spaces. When the first part of Vets Park was built in the 1950s, it commemorated the contributions and sacrifices of Bay Citys, and Americas, World War II veterans. That conflict impacted many aspects of the lives of those who dedicated this space just a decade later. The concept of public space adorning the citys West Side riverfront was first put forward in the 1936 University of Michigan Masters Thesis of Ronald K. McGillivray.Back then, the West Side riverfront was dominated by abandoned industries from the Saginaw Valleys 19th Century lumbering era.The railroad that had connected West Bay City to the outside world still passed by the ruined structures and an unkempt forest that had grown up during decades of neglect. The place had a bad reputation, a hobo jungle frequented by drifters who rode the rails from town to town, hoping for some kind of opportunity in the midst of the Great Depression. Riverfront parks could give this land a much better use and contribute to the citys quality of life.McGillivrays thesis proposed a new city plan for Bay City and opened a door for him at City Hall. He began a life-long career of reshaping Bay City.Mac often talked about planting ideas like seeds, and being ready to act on any opportunity when they came to fruition. Veterans Memorial Park was such an opportunity. His park ideas resonated with the communitys vision for a memorial to honor the veterans. Then, in the 1954 Highway Act, America committed to building an Interstate Highway System, connecting every major city in the country. Michigan chose routes that would bypass most cities, with penetrator routes linking downtowns to the new Interstates. For Bay City, highway M-25 would connect to Interstate 75, running through the West Side on a pair of one-way streets and crossing the Saginaw River to downtown on a new bascule bridge. The west approach of Veterans Memorial Bridge would form an elevated roadway across the new Veterans Memorial Park. The elevated highway allowed traffic to cross over the busy railroad without delay. In the park, the embankment was the closest thing to a hill that Bay City kids had ever seen. Winter sledding was one of the first activities in the new park, and remains popular in cold weather.South of the bridge were several slips, dredged fingers of deep water that had allowed sailing ships, and later Great Lakes steamers, to dock while unloading cargo to freight trains or horse drawn wagons. Filling the slips created space for local sports enthusiasts, with City and County Parks Departments, to build a half dozen ball fields. These bring hundreds of people into the park in Spring and Summer. As years progressed, more riverfront land was added as new activities and facilities were created. The Bay County Community Center and Pool fulfilled several long-held dreams for the town. The Community Center later housed City Commission meetings during City Halls renovation.Between the Community Center and the river is the Kantzler Memorial Arboretum, built on the former Davidson Shipyard and including some displays of shipyard history. For more history, visit the Trombley House, Bay Citys oldest structure, moved to Vets Park in 1981. Visit the Veterans Memorial Plaza or Michigans Vietnam Veterans Monument, a wartime helicopter. Signs in the park tell stories about previous occupants of this area. Many signs grace the Riverwalk, running the length of the park, the earliest portion of a 10-mile Riverwalk-Railtrail loop in Bay City, Hampton and Portsmouth Townships. This loop is the hub of Bay Countys non-motorized trails, which also connect into Saginaw County. The Riverwalks crooked bridge crosses to Bigelow Park, offering great birdwatching opportunities.Other gems include Liberty Harbor Marina at the parks North end, the Riverside. Friendship Center for senior citizens, and the Riverwalk Pier.Vets Park truly offers something for everyone.

Easy access to the Saginaw River, nice place to go for a walk along the river bank and learn some of the history of the area from the numerous plaques along the way, sit and people watch, or even cast a line and catch any of a vast array of freshwater fish the Great Lakes has to offer up. Launch your boat, sit at any of the numerous benches or tables, in the open or under a pavilion, and enjoy your lunch, and watch the fisherman, joggers, walkers, runners, bikers, or just soak up the sunshine. Bring your kids and let them play on ths swings and slides. In the winter, bring your sled or toboggan and slide down the slow and gradual, or steep snd fast inclines. Its just a nice place any time of the year.

gi

The potential is there for this carnival to pretty cool for the kids. However every port-a-potty is placed in a flooded area with no easy access besides walking through 5 inches of water. There is no labeled exit and they point give you an entry ticket proving you paid to access the park and to park your vehicle, so you have to argue with volunteers that you already paid. Poor planning and partly mother nature caused this event to be really not worth spend money. Maybe next year it will be better
