I have recently heard the news that the Asheville City council is voting to take the monument down!! This monument was erected in 1896 and has been a major landmark for uptown Asheville!! I know that some look at this as a racial statement! This was placed there to remind us of a piece of history which many of us had ancestors who fought and died In the war. I’m not racial whatsoever, I love people of every color as our LORD taught us to love one another! I feel this protest is going too far when everything has to be removed in order to make peace. Please folks think before you remove the Vance monument. I can’t imagine what it would be like in Pack Square if it is taken down. I am speaking as a native of these mountains!!!!

The historic Vance Monument, dead center of town. Aside from the excellent restaurants and fantastic buskers, youll meet the sweetest street folk. We usually dont even have to ask for a blessing of leftovers from some silly yuppies

This spot has so many good late night summer/autumn memories. You can sit around enjoying the conversation of good friends while watching the nightlife. Protests go on here as well as festivals. You have the best street view from this spot as well. You can see down any of the main streets. Not to mention the history of why the statue is actually their. In the winter time the city puts up lights on the trees in the area giving it that extra vibe of love within. Here is a picture from 1913

They need a new management, otherwise they will go out of business. Service at this place is very laxed. Smell of burnt food stayed in my nose for hours after leaving. It is a loss if such a place shuts down. I always visit Sante when I come from Raleigh to Ashville!!!

It’s truly baffling this monument is considered kind of the center of town, considering its subject matter. I mean, this is Asheville, how is it not constantly covered in protest graffiti? Especially the kind of crowd that hangs near it, where I either saw people openly doing drugs, performing impromptu songs, usually with the worst singing imaginable. The stores nearby are good. This monument? Very bad.

I dont support any memorial of the confederacy. Zebulon Vance was a convicted war criminal. This obelisk symbolizes hate, not heritage.

Review №34

If youve seen one stone obelisk, youve seen them all. Setting that aside, this place has become a touch point in the recent debate over Confederate monuments. Yes, Zeb Vance was a Confederate officer and Governor of NC during the Civil War. But Zeb also was the author of The Scattered Nation speech, which he gave multiple times starting in about 1870. It praises Jews, espouses religious tolerance, and supports freedom for all Americans. He was a product of his time, but sounds like he came around to some pretty progressive ideas later in life... Fitting for Asheville, dont you think?Look, I get it... If you wanna protest Confederate statues as a proxy for our current child president and his tacit endorsement of racism and hatred, I get it. Im right there withya. But just take a moment and consider Zeb. He wasnt all bad.

Its 2019... Why are there still memorials to the Confederacy?

Ja
Review №37

This is a monument to Zebulon Vance. It is in the middle of town and offers some street views of the city and Pack Square. The monument is just a stone obelisk and is not really anything to look at. Basically this is just an enlarged median in the middle of a busy intersection with a monument to an old Confederate/Governor with a bronze pig at the base.

Vance owned slaves & sacrificed countless north Carolinians in the Civil War in favor of slavery. Not someone who deserves a town square Monument.

I was born and raised here in Asheville, NC! The monument itself is amazing but, the fact that it commemorates Zebulon Vance is a disgrace! He was a confederate officer and our 37th and 43rd governor! He was also the son of a plantation owner and he not only defended slavery but, owned 18 slaves as well!
