We entered from the Clayton side (right by the oakhurst golf course and country club there is a small trailhead with enough parking for about 5 cars). The hike up is moderately steep but you won’t be disappointed by views from the top. We hiked the coal canyon trail and saw Jim’s place. It’s an old cave that was once occupied by a miner complete with a small sun hole and a spot that once had a stove chimney. We’re also able to see some ruins of the clack diamond shaft. Only some of the brick remains. On another trip we entered from the Antioch side and hiked to the town site of somersville as well as the old pioneer cemetery. You could get to that from either side but you’ll hike longer to get to it from the Clayton side.I have always loved this park because these hills are way more steep and rugged than the surrounding ones. Also the trails in the park aren’t crowded like some of the other east bay parks. Here you can get some quiet and solitude.

I Have gone on many biking trips throughout the area and have explored all the nooks and crannies on foot. This is a great place to go for a run as its a solid distance and has a good amount of uphill for a hardy challenge. Youre congratulated by a stunning view and scenery of wildlife from time to time. The Feeling of relaxation is easy to attain when one ventures into the deeper trails. Treat yourself to a good time and bring a Friend or loved one and plenty of good times shall be had! This Is also a great place to get glimpse of strata for Amateur geologists, a wonderful place to watch birds, and the perfect place to listen to whispers of the wind.

Most of the trails here are moderate level. Come prepared with plenty of water! Beautiful sights if you can handle climbing up to the top of the hills. A lot of narrow trail and walking up/down slippery rock. I took 3 teenagers with me, they greatly enjoyed. Not recommended for younger children though. Definitely recommend shoes with plenty of traction!

I try to make time to hike hear as much as possible. There is always something intriguing about this area to me. A great way to get your mind off the politics and COVID-19, though I wish people coming here would stop dropping there trash everywhere; I usually pickup what litter I can, but apparently there is more lowlife than I wish to accommodate. PACK ONLY WHAT YOU NEED AND BRING BACK THE TRASH YOU CREATE

The views are to die for from Mount Diablo to the North Bay to the snow-capped Sierras on a clear day. I love the rich mining history here. Wish I could give 5 stars but mountain bikes are relegated to the steep fire roads and I prefer to ride singletrack with gradual grades.

What a great hiking area, many trail options to choose from for all skill levels. Great views. $5.00 dollars to park, $6.00 dollars to go over the Antioch Bridge. Lots of history, the miners tunnels are cool to see. Recommend a hat, sunscreen and water. Looking forward to hiking another section to see the ole towns and Prospect tunnel. Pack a lunch and enjoy.

During springtime it is so beautiful here. The hills are green and it is still cool. Hikes can be a bit challenging for those who are a bit out of shape (like me) but are rewarding. The visitor center is very cool. If you have time, try to make it to Prospect Tunnel to venture 200 feet into an old coal mine tunnel. Lots of wildlife here including coyotes to watch. Can also take your pooch anywhere as long as he is on leash.

This is a fabulous place to go hiking. There are many hills of varying difficulty, so you can choose the length and level of your hike. We only covered a small portion of the park (~6 miles) and there was so much to see. There were 5 mining towns on-site although nothing really remains, and there is an old cemetery you can walk through. Also, East Bay also has a nice educational visitors center set up in one of the larger old mines, and they give 90 minute tours inside one of the mines.

Da
Review №35

In the spring time this area is really amazing with wildflowers, birds, and reptiles. In the summer is the best time to visit the mines as you get to feel the big contrast in temperature from the dry summer heat to the cool damp inside of the mines. Sand mining and coal mining took place at this site, but only the sand mines are accessible via tours for the public due to air quality issues that occur with coal mines. There is a visitor center inside a large room of the sand mine that you can visit without taking a tour, but a tour really allows you to see what was going on there and the shear scale of it was amazing. In the walls of the sand mine there are fossilized tunnels from ancient shrimp, a really cool transition fault line, and some breathtaking rooms. A fair number of picnic tables dapple the area near the parking lot.

Also the mine area says open on Saturdays and Sundays, but was locked and we were there on a Sunday

This park will cost you $5 to visit but it is almost a hidden gem. Many people who have lived in the Pittsburg - Antioch area know it is there. However it is not known to many of our friends from as close by as Walnut Creek. The tour of the Coal Mine is pretty neat and dog friendly. There is a new deeper tour opening soon. Im very curious to get in and take the more in-depth tour. There are some nice trails with great views, some that are largely shaded by brush and trees as well as those out in the open grass along the hills. Pack a lunch and enjoy this great place on a clear day.

It was a beautiful drive in and walk. Im not able to walk very far so I didnt make it to the visitors center or cemetery. However, I had lots to look at with the birds flying overhead and the rocks and geology that interest me. My daughter did visit the cemetery and was impressed by the size and renovations that have been done. My family has previously gone on the mine tour, but those are not handicapped friendly and are currently closed for renovations. There are picnic areas, including BBQs available. A lovely place to visit and see the history of the East Bay and the hard work of our Regional Parks.

If you go between March and September you can most likely catch the mine tours. Off season there is still a small museum, gated mine entries, cemetery, and good views. Keep in mind this is on the side of some hills so it is strenuous hikes. To the cemetery its not long (15-20min) but it is all up hill. All of the trails involve uphill hikes, but the views make it worth it.If you arent into uphill hikes but want to see the mines, the walk to the mine visitor center is not strenuous, just make sure you go in the on season otherwise the center wills be closed.
