High quality upgrades have been made to the whole building. The Art Deco styling and comfortable stadium seating is wonderful. They also have your favorite alcoholic beverages on tap and at the perfect frothy temperature. Enjoy a great night out viewing an ever changing array of quality Art House, Independent, and Genre cinema!

Great seats. I didnt like the Michigan theater as much. It was purposefully so that it felt dated, but I dont like the lack or cup holders or lots of leg room. The state theater felt like a very modern, cozy improvement. It was a smaller theater so it felt way less crowded. I really appreciated that. I also like how they are able to get more art house films, I went and watched Parasite, a Korean film and was thoroughly impressed. I highly recommend checking this out for anyone looking for less known films.

I remember seeing “Harold & Maude” here when I was a UofM freshman in 1979 ! Loved it ! I also experienced America’s only scratch and sniff movie here with Divine, “Polyester,” and directed by John Waters. The other iconic film I saw and LOVED here: Prince’s, “Purple Rain.”Thank you , State, for being such a crucial part of my early and formative years in cinema art and contemporary music & pop culture !!I live Ann Arbor ! (BTW: I felt privileged to be a part it the Grand (Re)Opening of the State a few years back !! It was a lovely evening !

A fun theater with a great location. Assigned seating takes the pressure off a planned movie night, and the location is great for a walk around the city. The 4 theaters are smaller capacity compared to your big chains, which is fine, but the seats may feel a little tight in comparison. All in all, a nice place.

We saw El Camino here, which was cool in its own regard. I ordered tickets on the website which was nice and straightforward (did not require a lot of hoops to jump through). The theatre was nice and seemed well maintained. I had initially taken an assigned seat down in the front row, which was uncomfortable but not the fault of the theatre. I eventually moved further back and had a great experience. The only recommendation I have is to adjust the seating chart on the website. It seemed super confusing as I thought I was signing up for the back row but later found out it was the front. This didnt affect my experience since I later realized all the back seats were taken.Ill definitely return to the State Theatre to see more movies.

Ive never had a bad experience at The State Theatre, before or after the renovation. I tend to favor the anime films and cult classics showings, I love the midnight showings they offer. If you participate in their membership program, you can buy alcohol with your popcorn and snacks! The seating is comfortable, theres usually plenty of space for everyone to be comfortable, even with the most popular films. I prefer going to The State Theatre because its a movie experience you cant get anymore, really. It almost feels timely since luxury movie going has become a trend, but I feel like I enjoy my movies the most here. You still get the big screen and great audio quality, but it feels more intimate and cozy which I adore.I swear their popcorn is the best, theyll ACTUALLY put EXTRA butter on for you! That really matters! Their staff members are friendly, helpful, and pretty cool people once you start becoming a regular.

This is great local theatre. The movies run a mixture of quality mainstream Hollywood movies and indie films. There is also a bit of quintessential college to going to a midnight showing of some cult movie here. The theatres are comfortable and clean and everyone who works here is really nice and helpful. Really what more is needed from going to the movies?

A little overpriced for such a small theater but at the same time, the decor and atmosphere really makes up for the prices. Its pretty small and yet at the same time is pretty spacious, being located in such a weird corner is what initially gave me trouble, because its a little confusing but after talking to the staff I was able to get around. would definitely recommend if you want more of an authentic movie viewing experience!

A fun and clean theatre, showing many art house and limited release titles. Tickets do sell out quickly, so make sure you buy your tickets before you stop at the concession stand. We made that mistake, and ended up throwing away our popcorn because we had to wait 2 hours for the next showing. We watched The Favourite and it was a hilarious gem in a beautiful setting.

What a difference the recent renovations made! Almost a museum now, its great to see the history of Film and Ann Arbor intersect inside the State. The renovation really turned this place around. Before you couldnt even sit in seats without your knees hitting the seats in front of you and the screens were tilted and strange. Now you have these large, plushy seats with normal screens. If you want to see new releases, this is the most convenient place to see them as a student. They should work on the frontage since its easy to miss the doors

We saw Black Panther here about four times last year. If youre looking for an IMAX screen and lounge-chair seating, you wont appreciate the State. If you want to see movies the way they did in the golden era of movies, this and the Mich are the places to go. The State is intimate - not a big box. If you think the theater should be part of the experience, you should give the State a try.

This theater was a close to 2000 seat landmark until the company running it quit. The ground level (main floor) became retail shops, and balcony was split down the middle to make 2 theaters. When the Michigan Theater became a nonprofit, they were able to run the State Theatre. After some major renovations, in late 2017, State reopened as 4 smaller screening rooms. Comfy seating, improved sound, online seat reservations possible, better concessions, and a film experience for the 21st century.

I havent been in the building since before renovation, but it was a nice space. I came with a friend in a wheelchair, so accessibility, in my eyes, seemed relatively navigational (tho my friend said there isnt a handicap door opening button, so it would be hard for a handicapped person going to the movies by themselves unless they came with friends). Chairs in the theater were very comfortable. Audio seemed fine for the movie I came to see. I would come again.

Ever since the remodel, this place is even better than before. They run a lot of series with cultural organizations on campus, and those are always really amazing events. They also show indies, block busters, and foreign movies, so youre sure to find something interesting. Also you can get drinks without a membership here, so that gives it an edge over the Michigan theater for people who are put off by that.

Horrible experience. We had the highest priced tickets as an anniversary treat. The staff REFUSED to honor them. We arrived 5 minutes ahead of time. They made us wait in line for seat reassignment. Of course, slim pickings after waiting in line for 25 minutes after show was scheduled to begin. Reassigned seats were very undesirable, with limited view of stage and performers, small seats made for children and a 25 foot speaker tower less than 20 feet away. We lasted less than one minute of 140 db screech. Act promoted as acoustic guitar and singer, but real act was heavy metal band. We left and had a very nice dinner, although we had to shout at each other for 30 minutes until our ears recovered. Dishonest, dishonest, dishonest! We will never go there again, and encourage everyone NEVER to go there. Anyone giving a high rating for this place is a paid troll or works for the place.

Since its reopening, The State Theatre is my favorite movie theater to go to. With new everything, including seats, its a comfortable and easy-going experience. They have reserved seating which makes is convenient for me to buy my ticket and pick my seats ahead of time so I dont have to worry about getting crappy seats or not being able to sit with my friends. The staff is very friendly and helpful and I could eat their popcorn for days. My husband is especially excited that they have the Nitro Stout as a beer option. Full disclosure, I work for the Michigan Theater Foundation that owns the Michigan Theater and State Theatre. But while it may appear like Im biases, its an honest review and I do love the new theater :D.

Where theaters go, The State is not like a modern cinema. It was made in a different era. The screen is a little smaller and farther away from the audience. The stage leading up to it pushes out into the crowd as if to remind you that this is a theater and not just a movie house. The seats are small, and the leg room is reminiscent of the back seat of a Geo Metro.Dont go to The State for a movie. Go for the atmosphere. Go for the audience and experience. Go because its in downtown Ann Arbor. You can see a movie anywhere. If you want theater though. . . Well. You know where Im going with this.

Its nice that theres a movie place on campus but its overpriced for a venue with traditional seating and outdated, ambiguous decor.
