This is a beautiful and well kept state park that offers beach access, a hotel, restaurant, and camping. The park is very large and heavily wooded and includes miles of hiking trails and horseback trails. There is a park entrance fee, but an annual park pass is only $50 and grants access to any state park in Indiana. They also have a unique tobogganing ride in the winter!
Great camping experience! Our site was clean, and we really enjoyed the two nights we stayed here! The sites on the hiking trails were gorgeous! Especially now during fall! We appreciated the variety of easy and difficult trails. The nature center is also a treat to visit, where you can learn about and see different animals of the area. The staff of the nature center are very friendly and informative! Overall a great location for camping for anyone!
This is great state park for families. The main beach isn’t too large, but be aware the hike down to the beach is a hill and you will need to climb back up. The beach is on a lake that is built up all around with homes and there is a lot of boating on the lake. The park has an Inn with a nice gift shop and restaurant. We didn’t stay or eat there, so I cannot comment on it other than to say the staff seemed friendly and it the public restrooms were clean. We hiked several trails, which varied from paved and natural trails. They also varied from easy to rugged. I highly recommend trail 3 as it takes you to Hell’s Point and also along Lake Lonidaw. Expect to hike some elevation and stairs. Trail 3 takes you through forest and wetland areas. Most is in the shade, some of the trail along the lake is in the sun. This is a busier state park, but the hiking trails were not crowded.
Nice campground, friendly staff. The pull-thru sites we had were short but level. There is so much to do without ever leaving the park (the lake was beautiful, the hiking trails were very well kept; there are guides horse tours, you can rent bikes, pontoon boat, fishing boats, etc). It was a little rowdy during the evening, but everybody settled down and was respectful of all the other campers at quiet time (10pm). We look forward to another trip there.
One of the best state parks Indiana has to offer. For 10.00 a car load hand out for the day .The beach is nice trails for miles. A nature center .Horse back riding.bike rental plenty of parking . One of the few tobbagon runs left in the USA.Nice playgrounds and the inn has a souvenir shop and resturaunt.I usually bring food in.I havent tried it yet. All So theres boat and kayak rentals as well as camping and cabin rental .a pool and rooms to rent. I am usually a hiker and have yet to stay. One of my favorite places to visit.
Beautiful place all year round. The toboggan ride is amazing. Must do type of place!
Very beautiful park. Potawatomi Inn is a pleasure to stay in with very nice lounge areas. Nice campground with clean shower houses/restrooms. Interesting nature center and trails. One of our favorite parks.
Nice park. Want to come back in the winter and try the toboggan run. Enjoyed all the blocks. Lovely spring water available as well.
Loved it. We have 4 kids 6 and under. The pool has a large shallow end as well as the beach. Very scenic area. Usually we have a hard time finding a room large enough for our family but that wasnt the case staying at this parks inn. No kitchen.. but the extra room was nice. The fact that the inn is so close to the gate was nice too... youre 5 minutes from some shopping and extra food options. Perfect for a short getaway... coming back.
Great state park. We have camped there a few times and always had good experiences. The facilities have always been clean and working. The park was quiet at night. On previous trips they had hayrides which were a nice activity when camping. There are plenty of trails to walk. Plenty 9f outlet shopping nearby. The park is also situated on a lake so there are plentyof water activities.
We had so much fun camping here !!! They have beautiful trails that run right along the lake. Our campsite was shaded and had a nice grass area for our dog. All the staff was super friendly. We definitely will be back next year !
This is a gorgeous state park. There is so much to do. I feel like I have come back home every time I come here. The horse back riding is a blast. There are very nice trails to hike. There is something for everyone!
Lovely inn and state park. Good trails, fairly easy. Nice campgrounds. Wish they had a dog beach, but there is a small lake about 5 minutes away where we let the dogs cool off from the summer heat.
Not impressed, 1st room was cramped and carpet was dirty, candy wrappers leftover, room was so hot we couldnt breathe so they moved us, still hot but better, carpet was dirty, no washcloths at all. The rooms were sparsely furnished, no microwave, no fridge. For the price I would not stay again.
Have been coming here since we were kids. Finally, was married here on the Sundeck overlooking the lake. Beautiful wedding! Gorgeous grounds, and plenty of amenities! 10/10 would recommend to people and families of all ages!
Beautiful, accessible park that seems to be great in all seasons. We went in the winter and really enjoyed the toboggan run and hiking in the snow. Sitting and watching birds at the lodge was a real treat as well. The park seems fairly large and water oriented. Lots of temporary piers on the beach that go out into the lake in the summer.Affordable and lovely
This park has lots of great forest, hills, lakes, trails and things to do. It was our familys first time and we will definitely return. To summarize:+ the campsites were spacious, heavily treed, quiet, close to birds/animals, safe for biking, and serene (we were in the more remote 500s)+ the two beaches were sandy, clean and great for sunning and swimming+ the boat rental was fantastic and cheap (we rented paddle-boards, a paddle boat and kayaks)+ the Poto inn looks great and we look forward to staying there in the future+ the floating cafe The Galley - steaks on the lake looks great and we look forward to trying in the future- online information on the specific campsites is sparse and often inaccurate (the low-res picture did not show that the site was highly uneven, and our slide-out was just fine despite online description prohibiting)- the provided water spigots dispensed light brown water with harmless dissolved iron (which settled in jugs overnight)- showers are warm but not hot enough for some (remainder of the bathroom experience was fine)- the provided maps are not very precise (not showing exact locations of trails)
Nice quiet park. Clean park. Lots of trails to walk. Pet friendly too. We enjoyed our stay.
Great state park. We hiked the Hells Point Challenge, an 8 mile easy loop, highly recommend it. We stayed in the campground and wish we could have stayed longer than one weekend! We will definitely be back in the winter for the tobagan run.
Great... amazing state park. Great trails, Inn, staff. More than I expected even without hitting the toboggan run!
A great state park to visit in Northeastern, Indiana. There is plenty to do here including multiple trails, boating, beach access, and all kinds of open space to enjoy. We love going to play beach volleyball and then cooling off in the lake. Everything is super well up kept.
We enjoyed a beautiful day at a wonderful site . Love coming to Pokagon . Enjoy all this beautiful nature .
If you camp overnight, the stars shine beautifully here. I love the hiking trails and tasting the mineral water.
We love Pokagon State Park. My family has been coming to Lake James for over 20 years and the state park continued to get better. There are great activities and amenities throughout the park. Potawatomi Inn is a nice state park hotel, but its a little run down and could use some investment at this point. It is what youd expect. The state beaches are great on the lake and the campgrounds and park are awesome.
Excellent park, very safe. Very clean bathrooms. Showers with hot water.
Absolutely beautiful. Nice, clean. That cabins are great for a romantic getaway.Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. The buffet style dining was delicious.(Amazing fried chicken!)Highly recommend this for anyone who love nature or wanting a secluded getaway or hotel is great for families.
Every year myself and a group of women stay at the group camp and enjoy 5 days of fires, lake time, and nature. It is sheer bliss. The staff are super friendly and helpful. The grounds are stunning and well maintained. The wildlife is gorgeous and everywhere you look. Fantastic hiking trails too! One of my very favorite places.
Its our favorite place for family fun! So much to do and the grounds are beautiful. It wont disappoint!
Nice state park. Plenty of walking and biking trails. Beach access, horseback riding, restaurant and more. Campground is okay but limited for bigger rigs due to the age of the park. Kayaks can be rented but not easy to launch your own.
We did the toboggan ride just be prepared to carry it back up a hill it was still fun
Well i haven’t been there in a while but it is a BIG highlight of my childhood! always had fun! such a good vibe. going back in october and i’m super excited!!
Lake is beautiful. You can get into the inn for free. Many places to sit down.
Great state park to check out in the winter time. The toboggan run is an exhilarating experience where you go over 30 mph (I clocked a max speed of 37 mph on my GPS watch) on a refigerated track that can operate even above freezing. You rent by the hour and when we went in a moderately busy day, we were able to do three runs. Pro tip: if you have a pickup truck, you can save yourself carrying the sled over 1/3 of a mile back up the hill. As for the rest of the park, the trails were nice but the overlook from Hells Point was slightly disappointing, although maybe in part because came in with high expectations for the view. We briefly checked out the lake, but it looked very large and worth making a trip again in the summer, this time with my kayak to explore the water.
Most of the campsites are shady and fairly large. The beach was nice, but the sand was rocky. Its a very beautiful park that is well kept. The paved trails were great for family bike rides and running. There are also unpaved trails to take walks on.
One of the best places to camp in Northern Indiana! Beautiful trails, scenic views, serene campsites. Great place to just get away and be in nature. 10/10 would recommend!
We have been visiting the park for over 40 years. Always clean and beautiful place. Family friendly.
Beautiful state park! Definitely will go back. Need to bring a bike next time. Slightly disappointed there was no boat launch for those camping and only for those staying in the lodge.
I have been going to Pokagon my whole life. It might be my favorite place ever.I love going to the two beaches, hiking, hanging out at the inn, boating, doing a craft, or going to the nature center.I usually camp or stay in the historic section.Winter at the inn is really fun at the inn. You have to go tobogganing!!The staff is really nice and its just a great place to be! I cant wait to go back. :)
Beautiful park! Parking and trails centrally located.
GREAT TRAILS! BEAUTIFUL STATE PARK! BEACH IS AWESOME!!
Loved spending time with my family before I move to Missouri
One of the Oldest State Parks in Indiana. Potowatimi Inn is located inside the park. Mant trails to walk or ride a bike. Located on Lake James.
A beautiful place to visit. Horseback riding, hiking, swimming and a great beach. Good food at the Inn. My wife and I love it. Very peaceful. Time to just relax.
My wife and I had an enjoyable afternoon walking and driving through the park. We walked the beach area and were able to observe 3 of the Sandhill Cranes that visit the area each spring. Lots of pictures and videos of the day. A peaceful sunny afternoon spent in the beautiful Pokagon State Park. After sunset we visited the Potawatomi Inn at the park, enjoyed a waffle cone from the sandwich and snack bar area, sat awhile in one of the lounge areas and then it was time to head back home.Thank you Lord for a beautiful day and Pokagon State Park.
We had a beautiful day on the trails at the park today. Thanks for such nice trails! I especially love how well you had the wetlands groomed. It is beautiful back there!
Really enjoyed hiking at Pokagon State Park. Trails are not marked very well at all but the trails are beautiful! Highlight of the day were two baby racoons we saw while on trail 1.We hiked 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and part of 3.
Wonderful place to hangout with family and friends ️
Nice shaded trails and a great beach. Bring shoes if you dont like strpping on underwater rocks. All the trails are beautiful but not really accessible in a wheelchair. Some paths are paved but they have hills. The bath house and ice cream bar are open at the public beach during COVID. Great place to spend a day
Went to see the seaplane splash at the beach of the inn. Very good , most of the people wore the masks and the social distancing , they had quite abit of seaplanes there.
Got to take my niece and nephew out for a nice walk through the park with a lunch plus getting to pick plenty of berries that we ate along the way. We also got to learn and try sample of plants that were edible from the edible plants class we participated in.
So far, more than impressed with this campground, and we are avid campers across Indiana. Private campsites, and you feel like you are in the middle of the woods (not piled up on other campers).
I was surprised to find an admission fee for the park but once I got in and started to drive around it made sense because the park has a lot to offer. There is an inn, hiking trails, lake, campgrounds, horse stables, bike trails, toboggan shoots, and so much more. I only hiked for a couple hours but I felt that the trails were well maintained. I would like to go back to experience more at the park.
The park was busy but not packed where you could still find your piece of happiness. The staff at the Nature Center were outstanding!
Very nice park but took our Kayaks and was very disappointed no where to put in and couldnt get to the beach to launch luckily we went to Big Otter Lake and that saved our day on the water sad l paid $9 to drive thru the park they wouldnt give me a refund
Very nice employees. The rooms were nice.
Great place to stay. Sites are a little close in some spots but overall a good state park filled with adventure!
I havent been here in years and this is my kids first time coming today. Such nice grounds, scenery, and amenities! Were having a ball!
First camping experience in 20 or 30 years! Good time had by all 4 of us, beautiful place, weather was great and nice staff.
It is really beautiful up there. Somewhere u can take family going boating, paddle boating and trails camping alot of things to do
Great park! Wildlife all around while camping and the scenery is beautiful. We visit 3 or 4 times a year. Well worth the drive, and its affordable.
Nice, lots to do very relaxing. The food in the restraint want great. Kinda slow. The Cafes pizza was good.
Great campsites, hiking & biking trails. Cant wait to go back!
Was a sweet time.. we stopped by late an got free admission.. thank you!!!
Beautiful park with tall, full trees. Sites vary from heavily treed to in the open. Lots of mosquitoes. Great biking. The showers are disgusting, old and filthy. Grass needed cutting so there was a lot of clover and bees. Only stayed overnight but there appeared to be horseback riding and other activities. Just stay out of the bathroom .
The trails are always beautiful and well maintained. Very clean park with minimal litter.
Great trip. Staff was very courteous and upbeat considering the strain put on them during these trying times.
Great place! DNR very nice & polite!
We stayed at the Potawatomi Inn on the park grounds. The park was very nice. We took a hike to the nature center. That was really neat. We watched squirrels and birds eating right outside the building. Id like to go back when the toboggan run is operating.
Wonderful park and the community really got involved with trick-or-treat. Check out hells peak for sure. No luck with fishing this time, but I heard there are some pretty decent sized bass. People friendly, and a beautiful park with lots of bodies of water. Will be returning in spring or summer. The resort on site does look nice, but we had campers and tents.
Very nice place .The people who worked there were very helpful
Nice paved walking trails. A doe crossed in front of us and hung out for us to get a good look before she took off.
I am a big fan of our Indiana State Parks. Pokagon is no exception. Ive only visited in the winter during the tobogganing season. The runs are fun, the crowd is friendly and the staff is FAST. The small warming station at the top of the hill is a nice place to gather. I wish it was a little bigger or better organized but it does the job. The run ends at the base of the hill and the Lodge. I really want to get out there one summer or fall because the Lodge is beautiful. It reminds me of those Summer Lodges from the 50s...wood, fireplaces, lake view and lots of sitting areas. Grab a bite to eat, shop in the Gift Store or sit on a rocker with a hot chocolate and enjoy the view. The park also has a bunch of great hiking trails but I have yet to be able to use them...maybe this summer.
Consistently hospitable and friendly. One of my favorite inns.
Beautiful sandy beach, soft sand, and kayaks. Nine dollars to get in if you are from Michigan. Seven dollars if you are from indiana. My dog loved it. Dogs are allowed to swim outside the beach area on the other side of the buoys
Great place to spend the day with friends and family while social distancing. A little bit for everyone.
Great state park with something for everyone in every season!
The toboggan run is a lot of fun. We arrived a half hour after open on a Sunday and it was already very busy. We had to wait in a line at admission. Then had to wait another 20 minutes to get a toboggan. Waiting in line to get to the top of the track wasnt too bad, maybe another 20 minutes. The ride itself is a little jarring, my friend has back issues and it really aggravated that. I ended up with a small headache but regardless it was a lot of fun! I did not go again because of my headache but other people in our party were able to go again. After their second time, they had to turn the toboggan in because our hour was almost up. Parking costs less than 10.00. There is a bathroom and warming lodge with light refreshments.
Stopped on our way south for the night. Wish we had more time to explore. Looks like a great place for hiking and swimming. One complaint was that you had to pay a day pass fee even when spending a night at campground, should be include in price of campsite fee.
Great RV site and very nice people all over the park.
Peaceful, beautiful and relaxing. The trails less traveled is where you will find the most beauty. For beauty is more appreciated when it is un expected
It was beautiful and so relaxing...I had an amazing time..the people are wonderful also
Pieceful really nice people and really nice area. Awesome vibe.
Awesome place to visit. Extremely well kept. Toboggan Slide, 2 beaches, tons of trails, Narrow Center, and more! Spend the night, or at least visit the historic, yet modern Potowatomi Inn.
Nice beach and walking trails.Wonderful Inn. Took my wife there for our anniversary
As a 90s kid, the old-rustic-lodge interior felt nostalgic. It was awesome being able to show our daughter how things looked & worked from when we were kids ourselves. Theres so many activities to choose from that keeps any family busy. The scenery was so beautiful. We loved swimming in the lake & playing on the beach all day, we got some good color on us. The arts & crafts room has plenty of options, our daughter painted ceramic piggy banks while listening to classic Disney music. The outdoor patios & courtyard were modern, clean and comfortable. We enjoyed walking around & exploring the decorated halls. The gift shop was super cute & has a little something for everyone, I really loved the idea of the fill-a-bag of the vibrant colored rocks for only $5 bucks. The staff was great. Theyre all friendly, helpful & professional (except for one)._Cons_-The pool was fun but could chill on the amount of chlorine & install or use some A/C, as its almost impossible to breathe in the extremely muggy-bleachy air when its 93° outside.-The beds & pillows are not just firm, theyre like a rock. It was nearly impossible to comfortable & woke up with body aches. Our shoulders, necks & hips are so sore from those beds. For the love, get new mattresses.-The deck & patio doors lock from the outside in the evening/night time. Youre able to go out but not get back in & are expected to walk allllllll the way back to the Main Entrance to re-enter the hotel. It was super annoying to keep having to call my Husband to come downstairs to let me back when Id just sit outside or smoke. Huge unfazed raccoons would roam near the patios, so I was not about to walk a mile to the Main Entrance in the dark. Install entrance keycards for the guests to get back in or stop locking us out.-The historic dining room restaurant seemed promising at first but the food was so horrible. We went during the breakfast service time. The potato hash browns were so bland, soggy and cold like they were made a week prior. The scrambled eggs were disgusting & inedible, I had nowhere to spit it out so I chugged my water just to swallow the eggs like a pill & I fought myself to not throw up.The wait staff were very nice & apologetic but the manger on the other hand seemed offended & was only willing to remove one plate off our bill even though all 3 plates were disgusting & untouched.Dont go unless you want to pay for inedible food that ends up in the trash .- Guests who bring their dogs, also bring them to the beach. Some dogs were very well behaved while others would bark non-stop the entire time . Super hard to relax on the beach with an annoying barking dog. Be sure to watch your step on the grass & the beach, some owners like to leave their dogs poop for you to step in . Its gross.
I love this place, especially the beach where there is bath house. Its so scenic. We have set up a white gazebo on the beach and had my baby shower. We had so much fun and took great photos.
Just a great place to be outside.
We love pokagon, specifically the beach and camping areas.
Awesome Freakin State Park Bruh!!
What a great place for a get away! Horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking swimming..you name it!
Very quiet State Park! They have both power and primitive sites.
