My family spent 11 years volunteering for this historic plantation. They offer a glimpse into the past that is breathtaking. Every year they have special events. Sugar Day, Herb Day, all with the intent to spark the love of local history. We spent many days demonstrating how to make candles and soap. Our favorite time was spent in the Open Hearth Kitchen. This unique style uses an open fire, cast iron, and the full Hearth as a stove. Live coals are placed on the hearth, I trim it was put over those calls in a pot is placed directly on the trivet. The trivet then becomes your stove eye. We also learned to use a tin kitchen.Every person who got to taste the fresh ground corn bread said it reminded them of a grandparents home recipe.
A great representation of a French plantation. There are two original buildings one of which is the main house. Other buildings are from the period and were moved to the site. The tour was very informative and interesting. The staff were knowledgeable and nice. It was a great spot to stop if traveling through the area.
Great plantation home! The tour guides were amazing and great with my very talkative five year old
Very nice tour. Lots of history
Amazing place. What a little gem, just off the beaten path. I was rushing and had to get a sadly short tour, but I highly recommend making time for the whole thing, I WISH I couldve heard the whole story. So many interesting little bits to see and hear about. And they even still use the cooking quarters for meals! It was truly awesome, I would love to go back again. Would definitely recommend!
Dont go when its to hot....beautiful place to visit!
I went to herb day there. It was great there were several different people theyre selling flowers and herbs. There was a rummage sale on the inside of the building and my grandson love that because he got himself a pirate boat. I have been to the Canton House several times for different activities that have been going on and everyone there is always very nice polite and the place is just beautiful!
Very friendly and user friendly atmosphere. I felt a somewhat peace about this place and definitely will b returning
Great tour, inexpensive, knowledgeable tour guides.
Very interesting tour of the house. And the outbuildings.
Always love taking tours of old plantation homes. This place does not disappoint.
So full of history. Tour guides were great, very informative. Loved the place!
Great place to find activities and great prices and a fun time to enjoy things with family
Nice area and staff were semi-knowledgeable of the plantation and the family that owned the plantation, I found it surprising that the tour guide continued to refer to the slaves workers or the girls when they were indeed slaves on a plantation. She referred to them as if they were indentured servants when that is totally different from slavery and being a slave. There were children on our tour to soak in knowledge and I would hate for them to think that slavery was just a 9 to 5 and that black slaves had the freedom to roam as if they could clock out and enjoy their families. Also children are allowed but not welcomed. They have precious items in the plantation that children will want to touch as they are curious children. It was decent to see, but would not return.
Of the several places, we visited while in the Alexandria area, next to the St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, the Kent house was our favorite! We actually got there after the starting time for the last tour of the day (unknowingly) and they obligingly offered to give us a slightly trimmed down version anyway which delighted us. If this was a shortened version I can only imagine how detailed the full version must be. The people were in period costume and as our guide walked us through the house she encouraged questions and comments never once seeming to want to hurry us through. The woman who showed us through the outer buildings was just as kind and knowledgeable as the inside young lady was and again invited our comments and questions, even in the stifling August heat, never failing to respond with a smile. If youre into history this is a great place to visit and you may even learn a thing or two like why the saying, mind your own beeswax wasnt originally intended as a reprimand Two thumbs up and 5 stars for sure!
Historical plantation home with guided tours. They also have historical outhouse that would have been part of the plantation. If you like history this is worth seeing.
The place is beautiful, hiding well the gut wretching horrors of slavery
Tour is way to high priced. After we read reviews we thought it was free. It most definitely was not. If walking on a tour by yourself was an option it wasnt obvious. Tour was dry in the main house that the last gave. Tour outside by the guy was better. He didnt have the Im better than you attitude like the lady did!
A secret touring spot in the city of Alexandria probably overlooked buy most turrets. How ever if you happen to visit and tour this unique bit of Central Louisiana history you will find it well worth the cost of admission. The tour includes a well detailed description of life in the plantation house along with a detailed tour of the five outer buildings. I completely enjoyed learning about Kent Plantation house and grounds. Be sure not to miss this very unique piece of Louisiana history.
Great history on Plantation life in Alexandria, LA. Both tour guides really knew their history. Well worth the $11.
So much history. Very good tour.
Loved the Herb Festival and much more.
They gave a very informative tour. One of the best we have been to. They were very knowledgeable and friendly. Great group of people and interesting
The tour guides were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Very interesting history at the Kent Plantation. I stopped here to pass some time and Im so glad I did. I definitely recommend taking a tour! :)
Great place to visit..!!
I was there to participate in a square dancing exhibition. Afterwards, I walked around to look at exhibits. Id never been before, but plan to attend again in the future. I was impressed.
This is my place to volunteer. We raffle a queen size HANDMADE quilt at SUGAR DAY Nov. 10th 2018. We do this each year on the 2nd Sat. in Nov. Lots of vendors a d goodies to purchase. Come and have a good time.
The Kent House Plantation always has fun and exciting, and educational things to do. Always a good place to go.
We toured in 2016. I was impressed with the history behind this plantation. The original owner built his house and grew sugar cane, first under Spanish rule, then French rule, and finally, under US rule. This only plantation I know of that is open that is so old.The house and other buildings are in great shape, and made from Cypress.
The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. I actually had more fun than I tjoight i would.
Excellent presentation of the property history and the historical period in this area. Beautiful structures and site. Definitely worth the tour fee!
Beautiful set up and experience. Its like traveling to the past and the staff was very friendly.
A lot of history in this beautiful old plantation. I especially like the Herb Days, held twice a year on the grounds. Open year round for tours by knowledgeable guides.
Go here. Love it. Pretty darn cool!
Great tour guides and very interesting plantation. Would recommend to anyone interested in history.
Great place!
Old historical site
Very enlightening & historically beautiful!....
A must see!
Very nice mostly original antique plantation home. Be sure to check for special events and tour times before making the trip.
I loooovvvve this place. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the history. I brought my son there for the first time and it was just us 2 on tour and the woman really took her time and asked questions for him to answer and get involved and interested (got me interested too like a child in a field trip!). They also have a pretty nifty gift shop with lots of knick knacks and old timey memorabillia, and a cookbook with original recipes from the family that used to own it!!!!
Great history of a plantation.
Great place to visit. Great history lesson
Well preserved 1800 plantation house. The tour guides were great and we learned alot.
Tour guides were nice and gave us information about this rich cultural experience.
They have wonderful events: bug day, herb day, le tour de bayou, and storytelling. These are all great events for families!
Very delightful experience and lots of fun facts about the history of the plantation and surrounding area and occupants
My kids love the events they have
