Go to the Petroglyph visitor center first and grab a map and a magnet for your ref. :) you can drive to the basically 3 points of interest or just hike, which is in a 3.5 mile in average. Be prepared to spend a couple hours in each point, me and my family did only one! A lot of culture and history. This trip was rejuvenating and enriching. This drawings just reminded everyone the importance of ancient people, land and nature!!!!

This is a great, small, hike for those that dont have the time to do the others. That said, it is a hike UP, with slippery trails and may not be for those that have footing issues. Really great piece of history in the city.

This was a cool place to visit. I really liked that there were three paths to take to the petroglyphs as it was freezing outside and I just wasn’t in the mood to walk miles and miles in the cold. This is an activity you can do in about 30-60 if you’d like, or you can take hours and take your time on the longer trails.

While the visitor center is closed due to Covid, i wouldnt bother. You still have 3 trails open for hiking. One is a parking available trailhead with open restrooms. Its about a 2 mile loop hike with markers on the trail pointing out each glyph. (Very small and distant)The other 2 are in a neighborhood. They are not trailheads per say, just small openings in the fence for access.I could have enjoyed the 2 small trail hikes if it werent for the ground covering of broken glass.I had to carry my dog over about half of the trails to make sure she didnt step in broken glass. The 3 trails i referenced are easily identified in any of the trail maps online. For me, its a hard pass at least until the visitor center re-opens with access to other trails.

I am always ready to see ancient drawings, these were my first petroglyphs! If you visit Boca Negra canyon you will learn a lot about the glyphs specifically (there are a LOT) and also about the geology as well which is more interesting than I would have expected. DO NOT TOUCH THE PTROGLYPHS!! They will fade and make it more difficult to see them.

Great place to go see some wonderful Native American artifacts and get some good blessings. It is a good hike up to the top where you will see plenty of petroglyphs and signs telling you about the area. Sadly some unthoughtful folks have put there own writings on the rocks. Oh well just enjoy.

Its interesting that this park is made up of 3 sites, none of which are at the visitors center and all have their own hours and rules. I walked through Boca Negra Canyon - Short trails, get up close to petroglyphs, great for kids. Piedras Marcadas site is a large open desert site smacked between lots of development, the petroglyphs are plentiful but quite far from the trails.

Three places in this national park that has petroglyphs. They will direct you at the visitor center. Other parts of the park have holes and good views, but no petroglyphs. We hiked one if them and it was a small gorge. It wasnt too strenuous and great views. It was pretty and set right in Rio rancho. A nice little get away from the hussle and bussle of the day and surrounding town.

We had an awesome time. The National Monument area is very clean, well maintained, and easy to navigate. As someone else mentioned, if you want a map, make sure to stop at the visitor center first. If you are ok with just following the trail markers and taking it all in, that works as well. If you are going in the warmer months, make sure to carry water and I would not suggest flip flop or thong type footwear. The path is mostly sandy, but there is lava rock in random places that you may have to walk over.

This is a beautiful open space to visit. It is an easy walk, relatively flat, and dog friendly. It is rather exposed so I wouldn’t do it in the heat of the day in August. It is fun to try and pick out the various petroglyphs scattered in the rocks. Some are easy to find and I am sure I missed several.

Incredible! The history and culture and just the sacredness of this place(s) alone is lovely. This is one of my favorite places to visit in New Mexico. You will have to put on your good hiking boots or shoes and get ready to explore the trails. There are many petroglyphs to see and many little animals along the trail. Roadrunners and such. Super cool place to go for a nice stroll alone or with family. You might even see some coyote tracks in the snow/sand. My favorite petroglyph to see on the trail was the Circle of Life. The feeling you get while being here is indescribable therefore the experience is necessary.

I recommend this trail (Volcanoes Trail off Atrisco Vista) for families with children or dogs, and trail runners. The trail is wide and has gentle slopes most of the way. The ascent up the volcano is steeper and very gravely/rocky on the east slope. With children it would be better to ascend on the east and descend on the west side. There are vault toilets at the trail head. The busiest times are weekend mornings.

Evidently they have high power binoculars and they thought I had put a stone in my pocket but I didnt. Yes they searched me to find out. We were picking up the bowl movement of our dog. They decided to look in our vehicle when they did they noticed an open container of beer we didnt take it on a trail with us so we left it in the vehicle well that is a No-No whatever you do do not bring open containers onto the property my husband did get a ticket. we feel like that its kind of petty and an abuse of power .

Have you seen the ancient etches on stones at the Petroglyph National Monument in Albuquerque, New Mexico? If you have not, then you should. You will see the earlier works of native Indians that date back to 1300 AD. There are also sketches that may be drawn several centuries later by Spanish settlers. From afar, the ancient graffiti are unrecognizable. Only when you follow the trail and look closely unto the rocks that you’ll spot the glyphs.Right at the foot of the hill. This sight welcomes you once you parked your vehicle. You see people going up the rocky hill through zigzag trails. The trails range from somewhat easy to challenging, sometimes steep and usually uneven. Then you see the first petroglyph. It’s eerie. It is easy to spot the many, many glyphs around that are all well-preserved.
