The staff and volunteers at this house and the houses they own next to it for the gift shop could not be any more friendlier. And the tour was worth it many times over. Dr. Bob was such an alcoholic that he hid bottles from his family inside the bricks of the building. You can see them on the tour. You can also see the living room and the typewriter where it all began. After the tour be sure to visit Dr. Bobs grave. The cemetery is just down the road and there are signs inside the cemetery directing you to his grave. The only thing I will add is to be careful driving on the roads. Im glad theyre still the original bricked roads but they are extremely rough to drive on. You will tear your vehicle up if you drive a normal speed. Outside of that its a great experience. Thank you for the great hospitality!

Anyone interested in AA or AA history should go if I the Akron area. Even if only to stand where history happened. People who talk about AA history, often mention Bill and Lois home Stepping Stones. They mention the home of T. Henry and Clarace Williams and other couples. Maybe Anne Smith didnt live there because everyone seems to leave out Anne who, in her obit was called the mother of AA and without her and so many other women, AA might never have happened. I vote for the house at 855 Ardmores name be changed to the home of Dr. Bob AND Anne instead of only Dr. Bobs house. Its time after almost 80 years, to recognize the mother of AA and not just her husband - sounds kind of sexist to me.

Cmon, Dr Bob house is a memorial to the co founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, the largest, longest running, most successful program of recovery from alcoholism and other addictions. As a destination, its intentionally modest and austere, reflecting the modest beginnings of the fellowship on the early and mid 20th century. Its a house that a family lived in and grew up in. Its filled with nostalgia and memorabilia. However, the location is also the designated center of origin for the largest non-religious spiritual movement in America and probably in the world. As such, this has become a place of reverence, where strangers - often from other parts of the world - meet and may share a connectedness with each other, if they or their loved ones are in the fellowship. A true gem. Very crowded on AA Founders Day which is the weekend closest to June 10, the day attributed as the sobriety date for Dr. Bob Smith.

For those interested in the history of AA, Dr. Bobs house was most definitely worth the trip out to Akron, technically Fairlawn. I loved how it is run by volunteers, all of them so eager to share the history of Alcoholics Anonymous. We were the only ones in the house the morning we visited. We had lots of time to tour, ask questions, take it all in. If I could give it more than five stars, I would.

What an AMAZING experience. Its strange that I live so close to where it all started and I havent visited until founders day when its packed full. I got goosebumps walking through this house, just thinking about all the things that happened in that house that helped AA continue to be the success it is today. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and professional. I got to do the third step prayer upstairs and it was such a spiritual experience. I will definitely be returning sometime in the near future to be able to take my time through the house. Theyve got a gift shop that you can get all sorts of neat things, my only recommendation would be for them to expand the gift shop to offer a wider variety of things. If you ever have the chance to check it out I HIGHLY recommend it.
