The Mead Cultural Education Center is truly a fantastic piece of art in and of itself. Built in 1909 on the campus of the Dakota Hospital for the Insane as the womens ward. No expense was spared in the construction of the building with granite block walls, terrazzo floors, hand painted details in the ceiling trays and a grand Italian marble staircase, the building is enough to draw you in. But the history inside will enhance your visit tremendously, with a brand new childrens museum and Lewis and Clark exhibit as well as the entire Dakota Territorial Museum collection and Yankton College archives, I promise you will not leave disappointed.
Really neat historical building that will serve this purpose great for years to come. The vision the historical society has for this place will make it another awesome reason to come to Yankton. Currently only 2 exhibits are open but starting in 2020 mutiple different exhibits will be opened and should really make it a worthwhile experience for all ages! Looking forward to 2020 and cant wait to see the changes that take place.
Loved it!! Once was a local hospital turned in a hospital for the mental insane. Thought to have ghosts still living on premise. Had spectacular art/history information exhibit from the Lewis and Clark journey. In the process of being renovated but interesting to walk around and see how they are preserving a historical building.
Great history! Well put together self guided tour!
A really fun place that is family-friendly and does a wonderful job of preserving the history of Yankton County.
We visited during River boat days. Renovations coming along nicely. Very impressive was the watercolors that were created during hospital operation and found a home at USD. Im a little confused about who owns them, but a nice asset to have available to museum. The staircase is a single reason to make a visit. An exhibit about plains natives and Lewis & Clark. Mostly documentation, but a potential learning experience for a local history novice.
Lots of fun things for kids to play and lots of things to learn as an adult
Gorgeous museum. Cant wait to see what the reconstruction unfolds. Super fun to check out during construction- poking around and being nosey ;-) great museum staff. Super fun and educational place for kids....not your average museum.
Very cool place! Lots of great exhibits. The family had a great time.
Amazing tour! Theyve done a wonderful job restoring the building
Small museum, could have more kid friendly things
