Jim was our tour guide today and he did a great job. We thought we would be getting a 10 min explanation of the house but we were wrong. The tour was over an hour and he was very thorough. He gave so much insight into Stonewall and answered any questions we had. Stop in as Jim gives a great tour!

Incredible site and incredible tour! Well worth the $5 (per person) price of admission. The roughly 45 minute tour is informative and very interesting. The home has 5 rooms downstairs, 3 rooms upstairs, and is filled with incredible artifacts from the war, from Stonewall’s life, and from the history of the home. A lot of furniture and household items that Stonewall used are in the home which makes it all the more impressive.

After spending my week in The Valley and touring all of General Jacksons historical sights as well as many others (CSA White House, Jacksons Lexington Home, Grave) I thought by comparison this small pit stop on my way home wouldnt stand up to that in which I had just spent my week visiting.I was absolutely wrong. The small-personal tour that had just 5 of us within the group was one of the most informative tours that I had been on all week. I had learned of Jacksons time in Winchester and facts that Id never known, while, seeing Jackson relics that would make the National Park Service envious of what is to be found within this house. The prices are incredibly reasonable, the staff was full of knowledge, and very polite. I felt very welcome and without a doubt got my monies worth. The grounds itself and home were very well up kept, with lots of tender, love, and care. The tour was short but well worth what you are getting to see, photos inside are not allowed. It was one of the best museums that I had ever been in and anyone who is genuinely curious or a fan of Stonewall has not completed a journey regarding the man without a stop into this home. A highly encouraged place to visit, enjoy, and donate so that this home can keep in operation for many years to come.

This lovely mansion museum is located in downtown Winchester in the northern part of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District. The house was originally built by Lewis T Moore an ancestor of the famous TV movie actress Mary Tyler Moore. She donated money to replicate the gold gilt wallpaper in the room that General Thomas Stonewall Jackson used as his headquarters office during the Civil War from November 1861 through March 11th 1862.Our tour guide was amazing and well worth the $10 admission fee [senior discount available :-)].

The tour guide was awesome. She was a history teacher and you can tell she loves history. Amazing how many pieces in the house were actually used by Moore, a owner the house, and Jackson. Mary Tyler Moore was a relation and donated the replica wallpaper in the parlor. Interesting.

My family and I had decided to visit the Museum as we stayed in town for vacation. Our tour guide Andrew did a phenomenal job educating us on the area, the headquarters, and related topics. At the end of the tour we had found out that Andrew had been with the Stonewall Jackson Headquarters tours for only a month. My family and I were shocked and impressed by how well informed and prepared he was. We were wanting more even when the tour came to an end!! Thank you Andrew, we wish you luck!!

Im not a Civil War buff. My wife, on the other hand, is all about the history and leaders of the Civil War. If you want to see the genuine articles of Stonewall Jackson, this is the place. A quaint little museum in a historical home. Tour was not that expensive (5 dollars). Staff was pleasant. Lots of Jacksons personal belongings on display.

As for the pieces in side well I dont want to ruin the surprise ,but I will just say this you want be disappointed.

This is a gem of a museum! If you like the Civil War it is a must see! If you don’t you will still enjoy it. It gives a very up close look at the time period and of Stonewall Jackson. What I found most amazing was the CSA original Stars and Bars banner!! You don’t see this flag very often let alone An Original!! Plus they have an original Battle Flag!!The docent was very interesting and knowledgeable about all aspects of the house and of Stonewall. Ask about the sad story of the saddle in the upper room and the embroidery made of hair! Ask why Mary Tyler Moore donated for the work of reconstruction of the original wallpaper. Ask about the funeral parlor door.

The Gothic Revival style house was built in 1854 by local dentist William McP. Fuller, who named it Alta Vista for its scenic view over open hillsides facing east across Winchester. Fuller sold it in 1856 to Lieutenant Colonel Lewis Tilghman Moore, commander of the 31st Virginia Militia. Later, while commanding the 4th Virginia Infantry in the Confederate States Army, Moore offered his home to serve as the headquarters for Major General Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson. Jackson moved into the house in November 1861, shortly after taking command of the Valley District of the Department of Northern Virginia.[4][5][6] Jackson was joined by his wife, Mary Anna, in December 1861. From this house, Jackson planned his Shenandoah Valley defenses and campaigns, starting with the Romney Expedition. The Jacksons lived in the house until March 1862, when the general left Winchester to begin his Valley Campaign. While living here, the Jacksons became very fond of the people and culture of Winchester, and referred to it as their winter home, hoping to settle here after the Civil War. In a letter to Anna shortly after he arrived, Jackson commented:

I went to the Jackson headquarters a couple weeks ago with my friends. We are locals and had always wanted to go. Awesome tour! Our tour guide was extremely informative and very kind. One of my friends is a special needs adult. Our guide was patient and understanding of his needs. However, I would not suggest this museum for anyone physically handicapped, (walkers or wheelchairs). Do to the house being on a hill with lots of steps. And the stairs in the house.

Our high school group had an interesting and informative tour by Brian Daly, who was very knowledgeable and engaging. It was wonderful to see things used by Stonewall Jackson, and learn of so many personal details about this great general. It was one of my favorite places on my students trip to Virginia! The gift shop was small, but had a very nice and reasonably priced selection of Civil War items. Highly recommended to all history buffs. The locals should take advantage of the opportunity to go there!

We just visited Alta Vista, Jacksons Headquarters earlier this week. The female Museum Docent was wonderful, colorful and full of knowledge. I am sorry I do not remember her name to give praise here.Jackson is one of my favorite Generals and have read much about him. She knew it all and more. It is a shame the town had encroached onto the property where the front of the house faces other homes on the row. On the stairs was a Battle Flag of General Imboden, my GGGrandfather served under in the 62nd Mounted Infantry. Well worth the visit for every history buff! I wished I had wall space for John Paul Strains Stonewalls Return I did not realize it had 3D qualities when seen under the right light.
