This former Naval base has one of the best Veterans Administration Medical Clinics around the Bay Area. Since the closing reconstruction has taken place and new homes has sprung up on the island. Other facilities has been popping up also such as restaurants and wine tasting rooms. Should you be in the area, stop on in and look around and if nothing is open, there is the Vallejo Marina right outside its draw bridge with Zeo Fredos Seafood Restaurant for lunch or dinner. Have a safe day.

Dear Papa,It was a beautiful blessed day, this day, it was our farewell to your lovely life.I say this because my Great-Grandfather Papa passed away as a Legacy in my eyes. He was one of the first Filipinos to join the the Merchant Marines on Mareisland so thats where we had our Reception. In Honor of my Papa. God bless.

Mare Island Naval Shipyard has a Veterans dental clinic located on its property and being a veteran I go there for all my dental work. Its a 45 min. ride to the city of Vallejo where Mare Island is located. The shipyard is a beautiful place, if you have spare time visit this historic place.

Its nice to see the older homes for officers 100+ years ago. There is a bay trail to hike to the other side of the island. Best for summer morning walks. Little shade from afternoon heat.

The security people tell you not to park here or there cause something unrelated to me happened there involving crime yet there are no signs just security harassment. Then other parts of the island kids are skidding out driving fast in their cars. Weed out the good so the bad fills the holes. Antique buildings and nice trees are being removed as well. Weather is devine and birds of prey are interesting at two walk zones.

In a excellent location. S&C distillery was a pleasant change of pace although tasting was expensive, 50 bucks. Mare Island brewing was wonderful, no dogs allowed which was unfortunate. We went back across the river to their pub which does allow dogs and eat wonderful food, try the brussel sprouts!

For those interested in Naval history, this is a gem of a museum. I had a wonderful time talking to the knowledgeable staff. There displays on the ships and submarines that were either built or repaired at this Shipyard. Extensive research showed. First those who are interested hands on play, a mockup of the USS Vallejo control room was on display. Its well worth a trip to Mare Island to visit this museum.

It might be a good remembrance thing or day for the Vets and workers ( thank you for your service and hard labor), but I can not recommend this place to anyone interesting to go there. Sure, there were good times and fond memories, but this place is nothing more than a wasteland, toxic with lead, mercury, uranium, and whatnot (it used to supply our great mighty aircraft carriers). It has nice view, and great neighborhood (reminds me of Fallout), and USDA had a HQ there plus a golf course nearby, I guess... ... ... not so bad after all.(Edit) Ok, after some reasonable thinking over, it is not so bad.
