Absolutely amazing and informative. It was also a very interactive place to go. Live canon shooting, and muskets were fired as well. They had homemade bread and tortillas with different types of jams to try out. I recommend the prickly pear jam. Oh so good. Made me crave it.

Had a great time learning and discussing with the volunteer guide about the role of Spanish colonialism in the region, Mexican independence and a whole lot on the dynamic nature of native American tribes in the area. Would certainly go back to learn more

Wonderful history of the Tucson Presidio. Its pretty much a must that you take the docent guided tour though. The tours are offered twice a week and actually explain a great deal about the Presidio that you wouldnt be able to pick up otherwise.

Asking the locals we met where was the best place to get a feel for Tucsons history the Presidio was their first choice and they of course were right. The original covered much of the downtown area, but was destroyed, partially by nature, partially by on going development. What you see now is a recreation, which includes an outline of the original walls at one corner of the original plus the remains of a Native American hut discovered during the construction. The entrance is through a door in an old row house and is easily missed. ADA entrance has to be arranged by ringing a bell and you are lead to an unpaved drive to a alternative entrance. Once inside there is a small gift shop and two rooms with exhibits. Once you pay the admission fee you are free to tour on your own or a docent is available to give you one. Take one from a docent who can explain the various sections, artifacts and exhibits. The most interesting part was the explanation of the making of red dye from cochineal a small insect parasite which lives on the prickly pear cactus. It was so valuable that the King of Spain claimed the right to all of it produced in the new world and it was the second most valuable export behind silver. The living quarters are well reproduced, showing both what a NCO would occupy and that of the ordinary soldier. There is a powder magazine, cooking and baking areas, armory and storehouses. Well worth the visit to get a sense of the early history of the Spanish in the area. To see the full reenactment of live in the Presidio, be there on the second Saturday of each month.

I attended their Living History day at their invitation to recognize our DAR Chapter for a donation given. I am so glad I went. There were docents dressed in period dress, assuming the role of their characters. They had freshly baked bread made in an outdoor beehive oven and fresh made butter and quince jam. A group of gentlemen (many from the SAR) did reenactments. We were treated to a new reenactment where they were defending the fort from a raid and as time passed it was 1821 and the forts Spanish Flag was replaced by the United States of America flag. It is well hidden in the middle of the city.

My husband and I went and had a great tour guide named Jean. If you like history and want to learn how Tucson came to be this is great way to get started. Also its a wonderful place to take visitors. Loved it! We will go back again. Parking is convenient and is typically $4--6. Plus within easy walking distance are very good places to eat and some shops. We were here on living history day, and it was fascinating. The volunteers were very knowledgeable about the crafts they were displaying, like weapons and textiles. My favorite part was the food - fresh bread, tortillas, and butter. Wow - simple, but great. The canon demonstration is not to be missed, and I took some pleasure in the fact that it set off car alarms because its power.

Best kept secret in Tucson. Now the Presidio Trust runs it and there is a (worth it) $3. entrance fee. You can self-tour or docents can tell you as much as you care to know. Tiny little gift shop, but stocks fun stuff and some great books if SW history interests you. GO on the LIVING HISTORY Saturdays, if youre lucky the canons will be fired! Authentic costumes, friendly volunteers, foods, living history cultural things, whats not to like?

Everyone who lives in or visits Tucson should stop in at the Presidio. This is where European history began in southern Arizona. In 1775 when New Spain (Mexico) ruled Arizona they built this fort to protect settlers. The Presidio San Agustin del Tucson Museum is a small reconstruction of what was once an eleven acre fortress. This was the northern most fort in their chain of Presidios. The second Saturday of every month is the best day to visit and see all the volunteers reenacting Spanish life, arts, and crafts of the era. Great gift shop and history displays. At the Presidio, you can also pick up a copy of The Turquoise Trail historical walking tour map of downtown Tucson. Dont miss it!

The is the fort that replaces the Tubac Presido as the Spanish move north. Only a small part has been restored, but they have done an excellent job. The docent who gave us a tour was a descendant of a soldier stationed at the fort. The hours are limited and the parking is sparse. Worth the visit though.
