We were in Taos for the holidays and decided to visit the Historic Taos Pueblo. The weather was perfect and we were able to take a lot of great photos. There were vendors selling tradition food items and souvenirs. Tours are available, but we opted to explore on our own. It is definitely worth a visit.

Here is a tip, if you have the chance to see a UNESCO world heritage site you should do so. A perpetually habitated site from 1000 years lies in between Albuquerque and Denver (basically). It costs about $16 a person and the excellent tours are offered for tips. Then there are shops inside which allow you to enjoy local food and art. A very educational and enjoyable destination!

Certainly a cultural experience. One of the oldest continuously inhabited places in existence, and a World Heritage Site. It is a wonder how their traditions have been passed down the generations, however, it seems as if time is slowly erasing their culture...as our tour guide indicated, not very many now speak the language, and many of the villagers have moved out.

I loved seeing all the buildings and the guided tour. Our tour guide was a member of the local tribe and knew a lot about the local customs and way of life. I loved hearing all his stories. All of the people that staff the site are kind, helpful, and eager to share their stories. Its also located in a beautiful part of New Mexico. Do make sure to check if its open before you go, though. It closes often since people live on site during ceremonial times, and theres not a lot of other things to do in Taos.

Taos Pueblo is beyond words. It is absolutely stunning and humbling to think that people have lived/occupied this structure for hundreds & hundreds of yesterday. The care of which they take care of this place is respectful. The people themselves are a delight. What an amazing place to see! There is so much history here and it was wonderful to hear the perspectives of the people who still live either in the pueblo or nearby area. Bring some cash for souvenirs as there are excellent crafts, instruments and food created here, but everywhere we stopped required cash. Id also recommend the guided tour, which is free but tip-based, so again handy to have cash. I was shopping for some drums to bring home and found one with the best sound here in the pueblo.

Please go and talk to the residents. Ask about commission galleries in modern Taos take when they display and sell native american art. Ask about their summer houses, farming, drinking water quality, schools, classes, language, sewer/sanitation, arts and crafts, politics, catholicism, .. The most amazing thing: You will get an answer. One resident told me that the elders dont want them to speak Tiwa to non-natives since we couldnt understand the meaning and all translations would fall flat and lost their true meaning, while another resident, when I asked him if he was fluent, fell into the Tiwa language and went on for a while before he realized that I could not understand a single word.An amazing place with the most open and friendly people.

Too commercial. Felt like a rundown theme park. I felt badly for the people who purportedly live there as it was easy to imagine they were props. I left wondering how much of it all was staged. A very interesting tour, led by college age guides who lead you through the Pueblo and tell you a brief history of the people, the area, and the history of the Taos Pueblo. This is an actual living community, living as their ancestors have for thousands of years. There was a fair amount of repetition in the narrative, and we expected the tour to be a bit longer and more detailed. The day we visited was unprecedented warmth, so it may well be that our guide spared us from the heat. We were a bit put off by the commercial aspect of the villagers all selling goods, although we understand that this is their principal means of support.Altogether, an educational and thought provoking site.

It was interesting to see an actual pueblo. But you only see the 1st ground level room which in most cases has been turned into a touristy retail store. Some are owned by the actual artist. Some of those are interesting. Most sell baked goods or are resellers of the goods you see everywhere in new mexico. At the end of the day some of the younger folks got off work and came back to the Pueblo to pick up or visit parents or grandparents. They were more willing to talk about their current lives. Most live nearby on surrounding native lands in more modern houses and work in a variety of jobs on and off the 99000 acre Pueblo. While they do not live in the primitive conditions of the old part of the pueblo they feel very connected to it it and proud of their traditions.
