I am the first member of non-Portuguese related descent with the Portuguese Athletic Club in San Jose, California. My membership began around 1987 - 1988 after learning and attending several events there with my Brazilian friends.The club is marvelous offering a gathering place, at my time of membership, for men mostly with ladies lending support in various ways of which event food preparation was most prevalent. We played pool, dominoes, discussed soccer, and planned many events for the Portuguese speaking community and their friends. One of my favorite daily beverages is the Portuguese coffee and brandy frequently on hand.During events it was common to have music, dancing, and foods from Portugal, the Azores, and Brazil served. Events were always well attended and the funds collected were used to support the club and organizations they participated in.The club is located in an annex building next to one of San Joses most beautiful and old Catholic Churches.I will always remember the kind wonderful descendants of Portugal and Brazil who welcomed me as the first non-native member of the club. It was never a challenge to feel at home with these wonderful people, enjoy the dancing, music, food, and other entertainment they offered.If you get a chance contact them, offer a donation in good will, and ask if you can come visit the club.
