Awesome hole in the wall comedy club with clever and frequently updated acts. Just the right amount of time to bridge dinner and late night bar hopping (or if youre lame like us, bed time). One of the better experiences and value for a night out in SF Ive had.

I came here for a comedy show. The service, drinks, and venue were top notch. On non-show days, this would make a cozy date spot.

Absolutely hilarious comedians in a very cool room. The place holds about forty people and seven or eight comedians took the stage during the hour and a half snow. Great selection odd craft beers upstairs. Unfortunately a super sketchy party od town.

The show was absolutely hilarious from the host down to the comedians! It was my first experience with stand-up comedy and I will definitely go back to this venue! The only catch was the 2 drink minimum per person in addition to the ticket fees. The drinks were overpriced as a result. The show more than made up for it though. What could be better than a night full of laughter?! It was definitely a fun date night!

An amazing place in the middle of the worst streets of the tenderloin. Came here for the comedy, and it is super intimate, friendly, and well laid out in a small basement, paired with the amazing beer basement. The only tricky thing is the homeless-slalom one has to go through if walking here.

Had a lot of fun but logistics could be improved. Waited forever for a drink, the bar is too crowded and you’re not allowed to the basement unless you have a drink. The way it’s set up makes no sense. If they figure out a better way to order drinks, I’ll give them the extra star!

Best standup comedy show in San Francisco, hands down! I have been to a lot of comedy shows, in San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, and The Setup by far is my favorite in San Francisco. I have been to this show at least a dozen times and each time it has been great and full of great comics. It is consistently a great show - with amazing, talented comedians and an awesome venue. Definitely worth checking out when youre looking a fun time on a Thursday, Friday, and/or Saturday night!

2 drink minimum. Drinks were over priced but luckily we saw a deal at the front! Came here Friday night with a girl friend, it was packed and luckily we got a high top! Id say come in early if you want a good seat. The comedians were funny. It was a good time.

Bad logistics inside, really disgusting neighborhood, hidden 1 drink policy, softdrink for $7. uncomfortable sofas, air conditioner feels like you are sitting in a hurricane. There are better places in SF!Edit: Show is good though!

Fun little venue in the back of the bar. We came on a slow night (Wednesday) and there was some talk of cancelling the show, but they went forward with it. The comedians were very relaxed and interacted with the crowd.

Great show! Small bar area, good drink selection. The only drawback was a drunk woman in the audience who kept yelling out, the club REALLY should have removed her, super distracting.

5 stars for the comedy show and the intimate setting. We needed a night out after a rough week and this was a fantastic escape. Everything flowed smoothly. 2 stars for the bar and experience walking in. Seemed like we were scolded for not showing IDs when walking in despite no one initially asking. My wife cannot drink alcohol so we opted for a beer and coke to meet the 1 drink minimum. It came out to $16 which was a bit ridiculous. I planned to get a 2nd beer but the experience just put me off. Still had a great time overall.

Great place for a laugh. Bought our tickets in advance, but I am not sure that is necessary. The place is small, but that just makes the experience more intimate. Be aware that you are required to buy an alcoholic beverage in addition to your ticket. Also the area is super sketchy.

The comedy show itself was great, it was like 10 comics doing quick sets with various styles. The bar upstairs gets 1 star. I found the heavy set older male server to be seriously rude and nasty, its worth noting that Im not drinking (started the new year dry). The experience of getting into the comedy show from outside is just awful, totally disorganized, inefficient and inconsiderate. Theres no sign, no host, nobody telling us anything, I stood against the back wall waiting with others for over an hour without a word from anyone about what was going on, were they at capacity, do we need tickets, when does the show even go until, etc. I eventually got in, and the comedy itself was worth the hassle. If theres a way to post separate reviews for the bar and the comedy club Ill split this out

The Setup is a stand-up comedy show in SF that showcases talent from across the U.S., with funny comics and content that resonates. Located in a compact, and super tight basement with cozy couches, this is a fun place to be, so get there early for seats and beer. Purchase tickets online or at the door.

Ive been to The Setup a few times now both on Fridays & Saturdays and have absolutely loved every show. The producers of the show are very talented and funny and always seem to bring in clever and hilarious comics who know how to make a good night. The vibe is relaxed and intimate; It feels like youre drinking [really good] beers in your living room and looks similar to what you would imagine a comedy basement in NYC to be. Definitely a hidden gem in SF - I highly recommend checking it out! They recently started a new show at Amados (in the Mission) which sounds like a lot of fun too :)

A literally underground comedy venue that will bring much laugh on your face. We came here for one of the evening shows and the small room was packed. I liked the variety of comedians on stage, many of the from afield, and representing a variety of styles: some endearing, some scathing, some casual, some provocative. The comedy club is underground, you have to walk through a bar, where you can also get some drinks. Though you will probably not need them, happiness will overcome you even if sober.Notably and perhaps saddeningly, patrons seemed much less diverse than the comedians. However, some patrons have, wittingly or by accident, entered some of the scenes, with sometimes hilarious and sometimes annoying effects.Note that the neighborhood itself is rather sketchy in the evening (aka, why is rich SF unable to help its most destitute dwellers?) .

A friend got recommended to check this comedy out and she invited us over so the three of us went there Friday night. We landed 20-30min before to get a good seat and a drink. We tried an IPA and a light beer from the bar but nothing great so the drinks werent that great but the comedy was really funny. There were at least 8 comedians who did stand up for 1.5 hours and my cheekbones were literally hurting throughout! Totally worth it. The area is in tenderloin so not the best location but not bad either. Close to restaurants for whomever wants to grab a bite post show. Will definitely come back and refer it to other friends :)
