A National Park AND World Heritage site, this is a much better example of a Spanish Mission than The Alamo. There is a film in the visitor center which is very informative, and even handed in its presentation of the Spanish coming to Texas in the 17th and 18th century. The church itself is maintained as a functioning Catholic church, and is rather ornate. One of the more interesting points in the film is an image of the sort of painting and decoration which used to cover the outside in stark contrast to the worn stonework which is now how most Spanish missions are recognizes. Please remember not to take photographs inside the church. There is also a very impressive tree which I neglected to photograph, but is worth noting.

It is amazing how much effort and the resources that were invested to preserve and make such a wonderful and historic place available to the public. You feel such peace and a connection to the people that lived and worked here. I recommend taking the guided tour, as the staff here are very knowledgeable and friendly. Youll come away with so much more than interesting facts, but also a better understanding of what we were like back then. If you like visiting the Alamo, youll also like Mission San Jose.

Everyone comes here and the Alamo is a must see, but what about the other missions? San Jose is my personal favorite for the size and beauty of the mission and surrounding area. Easy to get to by car with free parking, but I recommend biking from the South Alamo area.

Misión San José is probably the best mission in San Antonio. I even recommend it above the Alamo; it is exempt from the over-touristic hype that the Alamo possesses and, in my opinion, has a more authentic exhibit of the Missions original purpose was. Misión San José has a nice museum with a great amount of informative material, and is nicely located close to the Via Bus Line 50.
