Dont take your guests or family to the Tobacco Company. Go down the street to happy Sam Millers for cocktails, breakfast, lunch or dinner. Good old boy TC has been commented on as a paint canvass for 3 months. Federal Judge, Richard Williams, frequented TC for drinks & gruffly said many things in company demonstrating the level of integrity he brought.with him on decisions. TC remains a good old boy establishment, once unfriendly to the very humble. Integrity counts. Everything comes with a cost as it should, even if late.

A Richmond classic that stays consistently excellent. She crab soup (without the roe anymore) and great meat preparation are hallmarks since 1977 under the same owner. Finally, a carefully curated interior and three tiered atrium make the ambiance truly special.

An interesting dining experience. Multiple levels for service with an open air center of the building. Used for dancing as a nightclub, but when I dined was normal dinner service with a low key jazz band playing live. Great service, friendly and attentive staff, and some of the best pork tenderloin Ive ever had.

Great space, good food and service. Just across the street from the Berkley hotel so great location. Go for happy hour and eat by the bar.

Oh the food here is absolutely fantastic. Definitely try the Ahi Tuna and Grilled Salmon.

I had the ribeye. It was the worst steak I have ever had. It was overcooked and under seasoned. The steak fries also had no taste, although the dipping sauces were good. A very disappointing experience. They offered a new steak, but I wont waste food based on my principles. However, when half of an entree and half of a side is returned uneaten, you would expect a manager to check-in. This did not happen. The atmosphere; however, was excellent.

They had a cheap cover charge, fairly priced drinks, good music, nice bouncers, a plethora of various clientele; the dance floor was spacious, the atmosphere was pleasant, the service was good and speedy. Overall a great, fun, safe experience that made me want to come back again; definitely recommend to anyone looking to get drinks, dance, and/or have a good time!

Recently reopened December 2018 after being closed many months from a fire. After the fire, they re-did the decor of the two bars (the one in the front, and the back). Im a cocktail enthusiast, and was happily surprised by the quality of my drink. They re-did their cocktail menu with the re-opening, which is much improved from pre-fire.But the reason you should come here:(1) The night vibe of their bar is wonderful, other patrons are often dressed up, it feels classy, and you will have a pleasant experience(2) My friends say the food is still great!(3) Its a joyous place in a great location!

Tobacco Company has plummeted. This evening was my birthday and we booked a table for 4 to celebrate as we have done for years prior to the fire. Since moving to Richmond, my husband and I have spent many a birthday and anniversary dining at Tobacco Company. The atmosphere was always wonderful and dining was always something special until this evening.The waiter was polite but not very well trained. We sat down and he took our drink order. My father asked for a shrimp cocktail and we ordered a round of she crab soup for the table. This was all well and good until they brought the soup out before taking out order. Were eating our soup with all of the menus still piled on the table. The soup used to be rich and buttery. What was brought to us this evening was so lacking in flavor, that it could have been canned by Campbells. Mediocre at best. The waiter didnt back around to take our entree order before the soup was served. He didnt even come back around to offer cracked pepper. It wasnt until after we were done with our soup that the waiter cleared the bowls and took our entree order. About 10 0r 15 min later he comes back out to the table with a basket of bread and proceeded to apologize to us because our food was going to be delayed a bit. My mother then asked if he could bring our salads out to the table while we waited for our entrees to which he politely responded, Im sorry, but the salads will be coming out with your entree. While he was quite polite, he could have at least tried to bring us our salad.Finally the food started to come out. They brought the salads at the same time they brought out our entree leaving absolutely no room on the table for the plates. My plate was placed in front of me with a quarter of the dish hanging off the edge of the table. We arranged our dishes so we could eat without knocking the plates into our laps. Fine.Everybody at the table started to pick up their silverware to eat except for me because my seat wasnt set with silverware. Sigh... it was just one little thing after another with this meal. I asked the waiter to bring me a place setting and after several minutes without silverware, the manager came to our table. I asked him if HE could bring me some silverware so I could have my dinner. He quickly scuttled into the kitchen and a few minutes later our waiter comes out with a set of silverware for me and oh... all of the steak knives for the rest of the table. Ok, whatever...finally, I could enjoy my filet!I was able to get through a third of my steak before it started mooing. I ordered mid rare as I always do. But this was cold and nearly blue in the center. Oh.. did I mention the filet no longer comes with mashed potatoes and asparagus? Oh no... It is all A la carte. Thats fine. Im willing to pay for a la carte but it better be one heck of a steak.I really hate saying it but Ive had better steaks at long horn. So sad.After the waiter cleared and bagged our leftovers, he asked if our check was going to be separate or together to which I responded, I would have like to have been offered a dessert menu. It was my birthday dinner and a notation was made on our reservation. Even the hostess made mention of my birthday as she was directing us to the second floor.I dont want to come off like Veruca Salt but I have been going to Tobacco Company for many years and have always had lovely experiences and exceptional meals. It was always the place that my husband and I would go to for special occasions. This evening was just so disappointing, I will never go back.This used to be a great establishment but it seems they lost their kitchen staff when they shut down to make the repairs from the fire a couple of years ago. I really hope they are able to bring it back up to the standards it was before. So very disappointing to have such a lovely atmosphere and such terribly untrained staff and mediocre food.Please bring back the amazing establishment that you used to be.

On night two, it turned out to be a discriminatory place, which is fine. Freedom after all. But I think the bouncers should be more up front about it. I dont really enjoy this as a person but it is what it is. My friends and I will not return.

Have dined here for decades. Was anxious to go post-fire and finally got a chance. 40th wedding anniversary. Drove down from Loudoun County. Ambiance and staff were excellent. Food was subpar all around. Prime rib was tough and flavorless. Spinach was just spinach and garlic...bland. mashed potatoes were marginal. Bread pudding was cold in the middle. Cheese pie was not good. Every food item needed more, or some salt or sugar in the preparation process.

As soon as Jeremy, the Assistant Manager, realized that I was thinking my steak wasnt right, he quickly came to our table and made sure it was corrected. He was insistent that me and my wife enjoyed our visit to the fullest. The service here is extraordinary and the atmosphere a lovely respite from the busy-ness of everyday life. Do yourself the favor and go.

Best crab in town for sure. I’ve been tasting crab cakes around and by far this is the best place for them. Great ambiance and décor. I also recommend the wedge salad for its dressing.

The Tobacco Company reopened on 12/10/2018. As of writing, it only opens for dinner. I visited on 12/13 and was really impressed. They did a really nice job of modernizing their old look and feel and really improved the interior.It has been 17 months, but i feel like the food is better than before. I love this place and am glad it has reopened. I hope they start offering lunch again.

By far the best burger Ive ever had! This place is the beez knees! Absolutely beautiful atmosphere! They accommodated us at the last minute for 8 people on a Saturday night. Service was excellent and overall just love this place!

My wife and I went there last night to celebrate our 4th anniversary. Our waiter tended to our drink order and said the bread would be right out. After waiting several minutes, we noticed a table of diners that came in after us was served bread. They had a different waiter. We then reminded our waiter about the bread. He then brought us bread but It was not warm. I ordered a ribeye steak to be cooked medium. It was well done. I got a baked potato with my meal and had to ask for butter. The waiter never came to our table to ask how the meal was and if it was cooked to our liking. So, it is UNLIKELY we will be going back. Too bad because it is a beautiful place.

If you just search on Richmond, VA on Yelp, thats where this place shows on the list.And yet, its one of the top recommended list of places made to people who dont know better.I have to admit a little bias as I worked here as a bartender when it first opened in 1978.The way they treated employees is the way a baby treats diapers, which deeply affected my attitude towards future visits.Despite that, I have returned a few times over the decades to remind myself why I dont come back. The food is spendy without being great. Its noisy. Parking is not close, cheap or convenient.But other than that, I cant say enough great things about it.(Originally posted to Yelp 10-12-2015)

This is an absolutely great place to eat in downtown Richmond. The atmosphere is very unique: it is like youre eating outside because there are vines and flowers up the inside of the building.The food was good but nothing super special. My club sandwich cost $11 including tax, so for the price in downtown Richmond, you cant complain. I recommend eating here if you are close by.

Stopped by Thursday and asked if the Kentucky b-ball game would be on Friday night in the bar the bartender said definitely and he was very kind. My wife and I arrived Friday sat at the bar and the bartender welcomed us back and the tv was on our game again very kind. Then some manager arrived with a remote and began changing the channel when I spoke up and informed this person that I was told we’d be able to watch Kentucky he proceeded to tell me that I was in the wrong state. This person was rude and extremely unprofessional. Sad to see a person like this in any position of power. He might do better in the back of the house away from the public. I am in the service industry myself and I cannot believe he is allowed to act this way. I can only assume he is related to an owner or someone owes him a favor.

White tablecloths are gone. Service quality was poor compared to before fire. Food wasn’t as good as before and parts of my group’s meal was cold.

The (old) manager of this place used to be a real jerk and creepy. I never see him in there anymore though so he might not work there anymore. The restaurant upstairs is great. Live music at times and great atmosphere with the bar area and tables in the center of the room and balcony. Downstairs club is fun too and a great place to go if youre already drunk or only going to pregame with their happy hour 8-9.

First time going here and from Florida (just moved). Tried getting in with my Florida ID and the bouncer proceeded to bend it until it creased and then they called it fake. Wouldn’t even take other forms of photo ID to prove that it was real. Will not be going back

Overall, this restaurant was great! It is adjacent to a large parking garage that does not charge on nights and weekends. I love the interior architecture and feel of the entire building!My one minor subjective gripe is that I heard that the prime rib at this restaurant was going to be out of this world. Maybe my expectations were too high considering the prime ribs Ive had in the past. The flavor was decent (at best) and it was about three quarters of an inch thick. Ive honestly had better prime ribs at a chain restaurant.Other than that, I loved everything about the restaurant!

Visited this place on an unusually warm February afternoon. Beautiful outside, beautiful inside. I found the place noisy, not bad, just not my experience in European restaurants. Maybe it was the mimosas that kept passing by our table. I had Steak and Fries. Meat was good, fries were not to my taste.

Had a great meal here on a weekend getaway to Richmond. The food was really great. The decor was fantastic. Three levels with a cool vintage elevator, and a nice open atrium in the middle.My only complaint is that it felt a bit pricey for Richmond. Not my club scene ... but I have visited Tobacco Company with friends & family on multiple occasions & have never left disappointed.Holiday brunches, specifically, Mothers Day, are amazing ... the food is excellent.The building is historic, providing a clean & comfortable ambiance spanning three floors.

Very great place. I work in Richmond and this place shocked me at first. I didnt think much of it until I became more involved with the local townies. Really awesome old building with a lot of character. We were able to make reservations the same day which was a plus. The staff was friendly and the food was good. The prices were a bit high, but the portions were very large, so you get your moneys worth. It took a while to get our food, as they were pretty crowded. It wasnt a very quiet place, but they did have live music. For 2 people, with drinks and an appetizer our bill was right around $100.

Went there for my wifes birthday. Old fashioned decor with an open ceiling. Different menu and great selections. Our waiter was very nice and made some recommendations for things to do while in town. We didnt feel out of place dressed down, even though it seems a bit upscale. Excellent food, great waiter, beautiful decor and nice experience.

Worst place in Richmond.. would go anywhere else.. our food was horrible... cold stale bread until we complained then they brought out fresh bread. The fries are cheap.. like McDonalds cheap.. and they were cold. The salmon wasnt done properly.. I would go anywhere else if visting Richmond.

Just visited there last night for the first time since I was a child, and I was so pleased to have my positive memories confirmed. The decor is really unique with great historical touches. Good wine list, very good caesar salad, and great prime rib (which is what I remembered from way back when). Knowledge and friendly service. The place started to hop with a loud band around 9:30pm. The music was quite good, but it made conversation difficult so plan your arrival accordingly depending on which experience youre up for.

My family and I have held events here in that past and never have I had an experience as my most recent. I have been attempting to make a reservation for a few days now. When you call to make a reservation you are told the young lady (Virginia) is in, shes just on the phone but if you leave a message she will return the call. Needless to say my calls have not been return and all the manger Jeremy could tell me was they did not get them.... Really??? Then he apologizes and says I am going to see what we have available, how many? I told him 7... he immediately responded with Oh we can not accommodate 7 He never asked for any additional details on my reservation. In the past we have had reservations for over 10 people at a time. My family adores this place but we will not be attempting to do any more business here!

One of the original nice places in Richmond, Tobacco Company continues to provide a great upscale meal experience. A very cool old tobacco warehouse setting paired with multiple very knowledgeable waiters attending to every need such as filling water, clearing plates, cleaning crumbs, etc makes you really feel like you are in an upscale restaurant that you dont get in some of the trendy places around town. This is old school southern charm. The food is always on point from salads to steak to seafood. Everything Ive had here tastes fresh and well prepared and presented. Parking can be tough if you arent used to downtown as it is all Street parallel parking but they have a valet attendant as well. A must visit for tourists and richmonders alike.

Classy place! I give it top marks for ambiance. The food and service sucks. Last night I witnessed a fight break out and one guy ends up breaking the front window! He stayed and chatted with the manager until the cops showed up, how polite.

The Tobacco Company is a Richmond Institution! They have great Prime Rib and homemade desserts. During my most recent visit I had a Manhattan and the Company Chicken. Both exceeded expectations! A must visit if you are visiting from out of town.

Amazing food and amazing atmosphere! Its well worth the higher price, especially at lunch, which is actually very reasonably priced. The décor is incredible, even if you dont sit down to eat I recommend going in just to take a look around.

The steak sliders at the bar are amazing, but you cant get service without an empty glass. Upstairs the steak tastes like it came from a Wal-Mart sales rack( coffee steak) but the service is good.

Delicious. We went here for Valentines Day. A bit spendy, but we were in it for the luxury of the night. Very tasty food, my husband gets his steak medium well and I get mine blue so they were able to accommodate both of us. Live music on the bottom floor, we watched from the third floor. Over booked staff seem to have trouble giving attention to all guests. Wow.We went there over the holidays as a family of four (two adults, one teen girl, and one pre-teen boy) and got out at just over $300 after tip. Three of us had salads, all had a main dish (son had fettuccine alfredo... aka mac n cheese), kids had ice tea and adults had water, one glass of house red wine each, and a cup of coffee. Oh yes, the kids each had a dessert.Wow

Absolutely the most horrible night out experience. Was enjoying myself until I went to smoke a cigarette and they would not let me back in. Purse keys to car inside the club. They would not give me a reason as to why I was not allowed back in. Did nothing!

I have tried repeatedly to schedule dinner meetings for private rooms and been told that unless I have at least 5-6 people I cannot get one. The hostess has repeatedly said that even if I have made a reservation unless all 5-6 people show up I will get removed and sat somewhere and a different party will have my reserved seat. Several weeks ago I scheduled a private room and when I showed up they moved us to a different place forcing us to have our board meeting in a noisy, crowded, public area. The staff was very unprofessional about this and it was only after repeatedly talking with the manager that we manged to even get a table (remember I reserved one far in advance). This restaurant has terrible customer service and I would strongly advise everyone to GO ANYWHERE ELSE. I will never be eating or scheduling a meeting here again.

I went last night with my fiancé and it was overall a good experience.Pros: attentive service, small menu, good cocktails.We had fried yellow tomatoes, polenta, and strip steak with Gorgonzola. Everything was well prepared, hot, and delicious.Cons: very small table, few vegetarian options, sat next to the kitchen at a major thoroughfare.I would recommend this restaurant for date night or a special occasion.

My husband and I went to the Tobacco Company restaurant to celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary. The food was delicious started with a cup of she-crab soup, hubby had prime rib and I had pork tenderloin, but just melted in your mouth. Staff from the general manager, waiters, waitresses and runners were professional and really cared about our dining experience. Thanks for making our evening special.

We were not so impressed with lunch. Our server did not recognize us, we sat downstairs, we had long wait times (15 minutes to eat upstairs, and waiting for service and food), our order was put in wrong but it was corrected, they gave us dessert (for birthday) on the house (we did not have to pay for it). we ordered the grilled chicken spinach salad. chicken was blackened (too spicy). We were told that the grilled chicken is usually blackened since that is popular and how it is usually served.

I dont know what the good reviews were based on, perhaps the environment, but why would anyone serve a 12 oz. filet on a plate of ketchup!? The drinks werent much better. My first and last visit.4 more days in Richmond, still looking for a good (local) steak.

We have been coming here for years and always receive great service. The perfect spot for after work to relax or see some live music. The food is always top notch.

I held my small wedding Reception here. Max number is 20! for normal dinner. I had 24! I was so worriedwe would have to do the party dinner (appetizers pretty much finger foods) I wanted full dinner service. They worked with me and all of my guests loved it! Very good food. Our waiter (forgot his name) Young guy redish blonde hair very nice sweet and attentive. Bartender gave us a champagne toast! the band allowed my sister to sing a song to us! I would recommend this place to anyone looking for great food and atmosphere! We are coming again and bringing friends! keep up the good work! And good ole Southern hospitality!

Sometimes its good sometimes its not. They usually have tons of people so getting a drink is hard, but they are fair priced. The DJ is really what makes or breaks this place. Sometimes they have an alright DJ and others the DJ is just horrible.

The best place for quality meats, seafood, dairy and produce. Sign up for weekly specials. The best food sample stands.

Overrated and expensive. Food is average; the potatoes served alongside the steak were the highlight of our meal. Crab cakes are blah. Brownie sundae is overly sweet but nothing special. Drinks are horrendous (limes in a mint julep?). Service is friendly. Space is handsome and old-timey.

Second time, well food was still great, waiter was ok but overall the place started to give off a slightly douchy vibe in how hostesses and customers behaved. This place is really good if you just want to get a drink and shoot the breeze. The atmosphere is pretty relaxed and absolutely entertaining to look at. From the old style bar and wrought iron fixtures to the courtyard-like seating area with fresh light shining through, the place looks like a work of art.The waitress that served me was very polite and did everything to make me happy. However, theres room for improvement.Between 2:30 and 5:30, the upper levels are closed off and you may only dine or drink at the bar or in the seating area beyond. The bar stools are fairly uncomfortable after the first 30 minutes, and the regular seating isnt much better. Their food menu is extremely limited, Im talking maybe 15 items or less, and from what Ive heard about how they cook their meat, is overpriced as well. If youre wanting to eat something else besides steak or lasagna, dont even bother coming here, youd get a better deal somewhere else.

This is the last time my husband and I will visit the Tobacco Company on Valentines Day or any other day. We have been sitting at our table waiting on our waitor to greet us and bring us menus for the last 15 minutes. No one has acknowledged that we are here. Really sad for this caliber restaurant.

Tobacco company is a terrific setting to enjoy dinner while appreciating Richmonds historic tobacco industry. Many nights there is live entertainment in the bar.

Atmosphere was wonderful, but service and food was subpar. Multiple mistakes were made by the server, with no attempt to correct, or make up for those said mistakes. Server should of at least made a manager aware, for we needed only acknowledgement, not comps. We received neither. Crab croquettes were great, wasabi Caesar was OK, sausage and pepper pasta looked great, but lacked any flavor at all, and I mean none! Bland. Ribeye was cooked right, but poor grade of meat and no seasoning. Potatoes were good, but the greens were a mushy mess. The butter cake dessert is pretty darn good, for dessert, but had the worst chocolate martini to date. Overall, great building with cool layout, but food items are hit or miss.

Excellent meal here we enjoyed everything from the bread before the meal to the very last bite.

So the club owner denied me entry to the night club because after spending $32.99 in the restaurant . I spent a $10 cover charge to get into the restaurant because of the masquerade ball and $22.99 on dry chicken tenders & fries and a drink that wasnt that bad. I sat at the bar all of two hours after meeting up with my pregnant friend and her husband and went downstairs with another friend about to pay another cover charge only to be told by the owner and I quote I dont want you down here you sat at the bar for 3 hours and only ordered one drink taking up space and didnt TIP. Clearly I was taken aback when I had already spent money in your establishment and was about to spend money again to go into another part and to be put out because I didnt tip. I am quite sure that if the service was up to par I would have tipped but to be put out is just a slap in the face and just Rude.
