I am not much into history but my boyfriend is. I had previously been here years ago but last year we went and I took him here. He enjoyed all of it. He loves history. Great architecture here. I do like the library that is on one of the top floors. I personally thought it was the nicest room in the capitol. NC history is interesting and this capitol building teaches you a lot about it. It was pretty cool to see a glimpse of the offices as well that people work in into the building. The staff are very friendly including the security guard. The decor inside is great. The place is clean. Bathrooms are very old school as you would expect in his building. They have not been updated. It isnt a huge building but it is great for what it is. The governors office is right on the first floor. Monuments outside and inside. Free to visit. I believe they do have tours but we went near the end of the day and they did not have anymore tours. Well manicured lawns and grounds. It really is beautiful outside. All history buffs should visit this place if you are in Raleigh for a visit. Must-see. It is close by (across the street) to the NC Museum of History and NC Museum of Natural Sciences.

Fun place to just go and visit! Google said it was open, but none of the doors opened. Paid parking all around the capital and a porter potty outside.

Great place for a family stroll on the park. A marvelous experience when you have a kid and a spouse to go here. Whats more the Museum of Natural Science and the Museum of History is only nearby. So if you are paying a visit to one of the museums, do pay a visit here.Secondly, there are very good restaurants here. Should you feel hungry due to your activity here, you can always call on them to satiate your taste buds and the stomach of course!

It would certainly be fair to say that the North Carolina state capital is as you would expect it to be, if youve ever visited a state capitol building before youll see that there are numerous tributes to the foundation of that states history as well as the buildings where government operations take place, numerous statues to see that are impeccably crafted, and there is a lot of history to take in.There is a lot of conversation to be had about the Confederate monuments and the ways in which the Confederate dead are commemorated, however to ignore North Carolinas history in the civil war, their history with the natives, or slavery altogether, or to ignore the lives of people who fought and died during wartime, would be a disservice. Its a provoking location and would certainly be a recommendation to any history enthusiasts or North Carolinian, as a visitor I was educated and left there asking many more questions than I had walking in.

One of the smaller state capitols weve visited but worth a trip. Many states have modernized or created new capitols but this building predates the Civil War and the ground floor is still used by the governor. A self-guided tour upstairs has exhibits on the buildings history. The state legislatures have moved two blocks North, just past the State History and Science Museums. That building also allows self-guided tours.

The Behind the Scenes tour is offered periodically and I would highly recommend. Its offered by the NC Dept of Natural and Cultural Resources. The tour guide was very enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and passionate about the tour which lends to a more entertaining and interesting experience. You do have to climb a lot of steps so be prepared with good shoes. The tour guide was very accommodating and was sure to let us know in advance of tight spaces and narrow climbs so you could opt out at parts of the tour. We had been on a regular tour some many years ago and this was by far so much better. We also had a good group of like minded history oriented people so that made it even better. We finished up with light snacks on the second floor portico overlooking the grounds.

A Shrine To Confederate GlorificationThere are three proud Confederate/White supremacy monuments on tnt grounds of this beautiful historic building. They should be in a museum or in a confederate cemetery. The grounds of a state capitol in 2018 is nowhere for relics representing brutal, racist, oppressive ideology.

One of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the U.S., dating back to 1840. Though it may look downright modest compared to other states more embellished capitol buildings, its lack of ornamentation is simply a reflection of NCs historical status as a vale of humility between two mountains of conceit. Beautiful grounds as well.
