If you like old cemeteries and the history they may hold, then this place is worth a visit. The cemetery dates back to the 1600’s and there are many old headstones/epitaphs to read/view. There is no one really “famous” buried here. John Quincy Adams and John Adams were once buried here, but are now in the crypt at the church across the way. However many of there family members are laid to rest here.
We visited Hancock Cemetery after doing the NPS tours of the 3 Adams houses and the church where JA and JQA are buried. This cemetery has generations of the Adams family going all the way back to emigration from England, so it was cool to trace their family history. JQA used to be buried here before he was moved to the church across the street and his original tomb is still here.
While the Hancock Cemetery is not a large cemetery, it is packed with very well preserved and very old grave stones. The hand carved stones have a wide variety of styles. It is well worth the walk through this beautifully preserved cemetery both for the history and the calm in the middle of the city.
Lovely historic cemetery with the Old Town Hall on the side and The Church of Presidents across the way.
