Quick fact: One of the founders of the arts center is named Patricia Kelly. She and her late husband Bret Kelly have been well known philanthropists in Pueblo for many years contributing to other significant projects including the Riverwalk, the Rawlings library, among others.

Come here once a year for an event put on for my childrens school. They always take good care of the school and everyone in attendance for the schools annual Empty Bowls Event to raise money for pueblos soup kitchenen and other local non profits. They dont raise millions but it instills in the kids the importance to help others less fortunate. This year all the classrooms made a gift basket for the silent auction plus all the ones that were donated by local businesses plus as part of the kids art projects they each create a bowl that either the parents can buy before the event or anyone can at the event. Plus it always the kids to perform in front of family and loved ones at the event and people from the community either as groups, solo or even the marching band with color guard.

For almost 50 years, the Arts Center in Downtown Pueblo has served as the leading platform for the visual and performing arts of Southern Colorado. This community center offers numerous galleries, classrooms, studios and the award winning Childrens Museum.ABOUT PUEBLO & THE ARTSPueblo is home to Colorado’s award winning Creative Corridor District where creative industries flourish and you can witness firsthand the power and influence of the arts in the community. Long before the establishment of the Creative District program in Colorado, Pueblo has been at the forefront of engaging the community with the arts. For over 40 years, the inspirational and multi-faceted Sangre de Cristo Arts & Conference Center (1972) in downtown has been a driving force in ensuring that the arts are a part of everyone’s lives in Pueblo and Southern Colorado. The Art Center is complemented by the Pueblo Levee Mural, which is a more non-traditional venue for artistic expression. In 1978 a group of art students converged on the levee waterway which runs through downtown Pueblo and overnight created an art project that has captured the imagination of Pueblo, the art world and even Guinness Book of World Records. The projects cover more than a mile and is recognized as the world’s longest mural. To date more than a 1,000 artists have participated in its development and one can enjoy the art project by walking/bike trail or from the water by kayak. The Pueblo Levee is currently undergoing a major reconstruction to ensure the integrity of the structure for future generations and when completed, the community will have a new canvas to share with the world.

Somewhat limited in space and scope, but the curators clearly work very hard to bring high quality exhibits to Pueblo. It is very much worthwhile to stop by every few months or so to browse the rotating exhibits. If youre limited in money or are able to wait, the second Sunday of each month offers free basic admission, and even those days do not seem overcrowded or cramped. This is a very relaxing, enriching experience, and Sangre de Cristo is an irreplaceable part of Pueblos art scene.
