Nice festival with a good cause (non-profit organizations). The viewing is peaceful yet lively at the same time. There is plenty of space along the waterway to set up for the night. There are also plenty of stalls to buy art from local artists and students at the college. Of course there are also stalls where you can buy food. Parking is going to be difficult to find as expected for an event this size so its recommended to arrive earlier in the day and explore the area before the festivities.

The event was great! Interactive and fun. Some of the crowd was a bit pushy but thats to be expected. Fire and lights on a canal between two parks with performaces throughout. You could donate to add floating orbs to the canal or luminaries to the trees or path. You could even donate to be a fish kayak! Very interesing and fun way to raise money for the arts!

WaterFire Is an Experience not to be missed. My latest visit was in Honer of our Veterans on Nov 2. WaterFire on its own is inspiring with the Music playing and all the activity sounding the basin and River is awesome. With the Added Tribute To Our Veterans and the playing off Taps all up and down the River was No less then Moving.Providence RI sure knows how to throw a party and with all the happenings surrounding the River there is something for all.Make a long day of it or a weekend as we did and your sure to have fun. Your a short walk to Brown University and all that has to offer and dont you forget Federal Hill for dinner if you like Italian food.

I absolutely love Waterfire...it is one of the highlights of every year. Everytime you go its a little different and there are some solid constants. I wish they had something like that in my city as well. Worth the travel. Parking can usually be found on street if you are early enough or for $10 or less in any of the lots nearby. Beautiful in so many ways.

A lot of fun to walk around and see different shops and performances. Easy to find parking, good, free, casual fun. There isnt a set schedule (besides the fire lighting) so coming and going out of the festival is easier since traffic doesnt file in and out at set times. This is a great opportunity to explore providence and check out restaurants in the area. Its close to the mall too, so you can park there and walk.

Had a very nice evening at the Providence September 8th Waterfire event. This takes place along the river in downtown Providence. Its a nice and free event put on several times in the summer by the city and a group of volunteers. When night falls and it starts getting dark, the bonfires are lit and maintained by a group going up and down the river in small boats, restocking the fires as needed.People can walk along side the river and take in the sights. This event is well attended by all age groups, from tykes in strollers to octogenarian with walkers... (more strollers than walkers).Vendors sell food, drinks, t-shirts and other memorabilia.Well worth coming to.

We were visiting the area and happened to be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary. We decided to include WaterFire into our plans and we are so glad we did. It was absolutely stunning and a real unique experience. After the poi performer lit the first cauldron it started to rain but we were enjoying it so much we just let ourselves get soaked and soaked it all in This is worth a trip to the area, we really have never seen anything like it in the States. Thank you City of Providence and the local community for a great event.

I.love.this.place. The last WaterFire of the year was last weekend, but it should be scheduled for next year already.Such a mix of different art, from living statues, to bands, to glass blowing, to the RISD gallery near the river walk open. There are also a lot of businesses that converge on the event, from hawkers selling inflatable glow thingies, to a riverside two tiered club that offers good views and cocktails.Words cannot explain what is brought together in this, it is a moment to celebrate the Creative Capital, check it out, and see if you can bring such an event to your city!

It was an amazing walk. The fires and other assorted lit up structures were beautiful. Seemed like a nice area worth visiting even without the event going on. If you want to ride a gondola tho, you need to book ahead, which I plan on doing next year because it looked so fun!

This is a really cool event that Providence puts on every other Saturday in the summer and fall. This was my first visit, but as I understand it, the festival supports a different charity every time--during our visit we were celebrating survivors of breast cancer. Lovely performances before the main event, and the festival booths afterwards were a lot of fun (especially the glass blowing demonstration), but the main event was the lighting of the bonfires. Between the torch procession from city hall to the river and the ceremonial lighting of a ring of bonfires in the river, the experience was hard to describe, but felt both surreal and primal. Highly recommend, especially since its a free festival, donations optional. If you want to spend a bit more, they do offer gondola rides along the river just after the lighting, but make sure to book at least two months in advance.
