The museum is free on Fridays, so we took advantage and planned our visit on a Friday. Its a very nice and well kept museum with some great pieces from well renowned and local artists (Picasso, Renoir, Monet, etc). Due to COVID, our visit was limited to an hour, but I could have easily spent 2 hours here. Its a nice way to pass the time on a rainy day in Portland.

The Portland Museum of Art provides culture to the city and is a worthwhile visit. Even on the outside the Museum offers a sculpture garden. I particular found the person created from stone and wire an interesting one. Inside they have a number of quality pieces and have a fair number of sculptures as well. The museum is centrally located and easily accessible.

It feels good to be in such a beautiful building, surrounded by such inspiring pieces of art. There is a small food court downstairs if you’re into that. The art literally takes your breath away, some of it is so stunning. Ten for sure!!! Also you can’t beat the convenient location to all the great coffee shops, restaurants, and bars in Portland and the Old Port.

I love this art museum. My only issue was the security guard who followed me around. I know it was because I am Black. I told the director and she apologized and gave me 2 free tickets. It was upsetting but that made up the experience. The museum has a wonderful blend of exhibits. I often spend hours there!

For a town this size, the Portland Museum of Art does quite well, with intriguing exhibitions and a clever use of space.I attended on a free First Friday event and was heartened by seeing the number of attendees. There is a gift shop with some theme-related gifts, which was clever, and the staff were attentive to the guests browsing.A small food counter operates in the basement area, with beverage options (including wine and beer) and light snacks, but must be consumed in the basement.Outside on the evening I visited were a number of sculptures, which were lit with such tremendous creativity and flair as to project immense shadows back across the museum.Without a doubt, a small town cannot compare with the museums of Chicago, London, or Paris, but the Portland Museum of Art might be the finest in the region of New England indeed.

Spacious museum with historical and modern collections. There is a locker space to leave jackets and bags. We enjoyed every gallery as each had something exciting to see. Layout makes sense so you can work your way through each gallery and see everything. We will go back again as it is worth seeing new exhibits and also looking at favorites in the collection.

The Portland Museum of Art in Portland, Maine is a place full of art treasures. From paintings by Winslow Homer to Claude Monet, to find beauty in every piece one beholds is obvious. They have sculptures by Edgar Degas. Also, you will find 6 rooms of life sized sculptures which we did not have the pleasure of seeing. The giant sculpture of Ulysses S Grant is mind blowing. Even the bathrooms have fine art on the walls.

It is not my intention to hate on the museum but in all honesty it doesnt hold a candle to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston or even the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. They have a few works of art from masters, not many. If you cant get to Boston, recommend the Currier Museum in Manchester, NH.

Can be boring for the young crowd. Prepare to stand up for a long time.Place is full of pretentious people pretending to like some vague art displayed at the exhibit but in reality most were too abstract to make any sense of it.We saw a mattress on the wall; sardine cans on the wall; a super huge canvas of white oil painting; a very huge brown feces like sculpture on the floor by Noguchi, and so much more. Bizarre but it was good activity to pass time before dinner just wear comfy shoes.Came here free Friday 4 PM. Only wall displays were open (no workshop activities were open during these free hours and therefore you are not getting full experience of the museum - consider coming in during paid hours and check workshop hours offered)The museum had master work exhibit like Picasso, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and others. That was entertaining to see.Security guard will follow and stalk you around (he scared the hell of my friend as we made a turn to the next room, the same man was following us from room to room in a covert spooky fashion) especially if you are the first to come in. Was not a pleasant experience being watched at as if you came with bad intention (may I suggest a museum hidden camera instead with minimal intimidating guards).

This is probably the best art museum in the United States, north of Boston. It is medium-sized, so it is possible to fully explore it in about two and a half hours. It has some excellent pieces and a gallery dedicated to art depicting Maine. It is housed between two buildings; a modern, purpose-built structure which holds the majority of the collection and patron services, and a historic house, which appears to have lost its original charm through renovation. It is largely devoid of art, but I expect that this will change. Located in the tourist center of downtown Portland. Free on Friday evenings.
