Great time visiting Arrowhead. Beautiful grounds and looking out the window from Melville’s desk and seeing Mount Greylock is inspiring. Nice walk through the fields and lots of butterflies!

Tours are held on the hour. If you arrive quite early, you’ll watch a video about an alleged affair between Melville and his neighbor. Our tour guide had a slightly different take on their relationship which made for an interesting academic contrast. Only one other group was present during our tour and the guide was very informative and more than happy to answer questions. Thanks!

Historic house and a cute place to look around but watch out for the trails. They are ticks everywhere.

We had no expectations for this visit, just an admiration for Melville’s works, and a curiosity about the property. Our guide, Richard, was not only a Melville scholar, but an entertaining, engaging lecturer as well. Definitely a highlight of our western Massachusetts road trip!

Very small but really nice staff and really knowledgeable. I went during a pretty cool event where they had a special guitar made after the moby dick story.

A fascinating little museum with truly dedicated tour guides.

I will never look at Moby Dick the same again. Herman Melville was an author ahead of his time and a life better than any romance novel I have ever read. Our guide and author, Jana Laiz, brought Melville alive during our tour with trainee, Hope. Nan, in the Welcome Center and Gift Shop made our visit perfect by making sure we watched the presentation before our tour and pointing out unique gifts like the woven pine needle ornaments.

THE BIG ONE,the great novel America overlooked for a half century, “Moby Dick”, was written in this landlocked farm house. On the second floor, in a book-stuffed room with a view of a mountain range some visitors say forms a silhouette of a giant whale breaking surface, Herman Melville added Ahab’s obsession, the whale’s white color and much else as he wrote more than 160 years ago. The room has a brass plaque on its door and the books are gone but otherwise seems very much as the man and his family left it. A local group runs the site, with cordial guides, and the day we visited was August 2. That was the day after the writer’s 200th birthday; fans had shared out a Melville birthday cake and were reading aloud the novel in a reception room. They were no where near finishing.

Very interesting, especially for a retired English teacher. I learned some things I did not know. Would highly recommend it if you are in this area.

Small, but worth the time to stop by and appreciate the origins of Moby Dick.

A bit of American history for those who are interested.

This is the real place! It gets 5 stars for being genuine. Tour was good. Lots of different levels of interest . Maybe they could add some outdoor exhibits or even places to sit outside and imagine back in time...

Took the house tour and the guide was so knowledgeable about Herman Melville and family. Really need to go on a clear day so you can see the whale from Melvilles office window.

We had the last tour of the day and our guide (Karen, I think?) was engaging and informative. We enjoyed our tour very much.

Knowledgeable docents. Friendly staff. Lovely grounds with a walking trail. Clean bathrooms. Time well spent.

A must see for the Melville fan. A little out of the way from major cities, but that only adds to its charm. You will be in the beautiful Berkshires. Tour times are shortened in the fall and winter, so make sure you look at hours/dates of operation/tour times, etc before you visit.

This was fantastic place to visit. We had a enjoyable time, we did the tour of the house and new addition, the WW2 Collection. If your in the area, stop and visit, see where Moby Dick was written.

Wonderful homestead museum

Great tour and upkeep, the admission was worth getting to see the well maintained facility. It was family friendly with a great view.

Will be moving to Pittsfield in June & plan to visit this interesting museum . I was born & brought up in New Bedford Ma. & remember seeing Gregory Peck in a parade years ago while the movie was in production. my late husband & father of my son & daughter was a fisherman & Scalloped from New Bedford Harbor for years . My children grew up healthy & intelligent from eating lots of fresh ( and I mean real fresh ) seafood. Cant wait to move! j M St.Don

Docents make this place come to life.

For the fan, this is a great personal history lesson about Melville. Always excited to walk in the same setting of a literary hero. Learned of the things that inspired him.

Bring good shoes. the nature trails alone are worth the trip. would probably make for a great picnic too.

Grounds on Melvilles homestead are beautifully kept, including a vibrant smoke Bush and three conifers which the author planted himself. Nature trail and fields that look out over Greylock Mtn., the vista Melville enjoyed while penning Moby Dick in his study. A $15 ticket is required for entry and guided tour of the main house itself. Berkshire Historical Society operates this property in classic form.

A place with amazing history. Our tour guide was fantastic and the property is beautiful.

Arrowhead Museum, home of Moby Dick author Herman Melville and his family of 11 from 1850 to 1863, is a well-kept secret. This quaint Victorian home is the setting for a variety of museum exhibits and events. At the time of my visit, I enjoyed Baseball in the Berkshires, a wide-ranging collection of memorabilia from local and national athletes, historic and present-day, all with a connection to the community. Although the furniture in the museum is not from the Melville family, it is historically accurate and representative.The gift shop is small, but has interesting books by Melville and by others on related topics.The grounds are easy to access and there is a small military-themed exhibit in the garden area.Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the museum is its view of Mount Greylock and the mountain range that inspired the author while writing Moby Dick.
