A few years ago we brought our daughter to see the native american history exhibit- it had information for each tribe and you walked down a sort of timeline on the wall to see it all. It also had crafts and coloring pages for her to create- she braided beads and did some art. We loved it and thought it was perfect for kids. Our son is older now and we wanted him to see it too, but it was removed. No kid friendly activities were there to take its place. Very disappointed that it is no longer a welcoming, fun space for children. As an adult I enjoyed the contemporary art and the older exhibits, and had I known there were no more child-friendly exhibits I may have wanted to come alone. But as a family experience as mentioned I was very disappointed. I loved that exhibit you removed as well, and it was perfect for families. I honestly cant fathom why all child-friendly experiences would be removed. The map of animal pottery locations does not take the place of what was lost.

The Heard Museum features exhibits that span the history, art, and culture of the Native Americans. Well laid out in a large area. Educational as well as fun. Walk free or take a tour. A bit on the pricey side especially the museum store but the items are authentic and beautiful. There is a cafe for drinks and snacks as well. Individual day passes are 25.00 but there are passes for 3 visits and a year long all access pass as well. The Phoenix library also features culture passes that gain entry for two people for free. Altogether a great experience. Recommend to anyone from the inquisitive to the native American enthusiast.

What a beautiful place filled with exhibits that evoke tragic and important memories of the Southwest. The most important is the exhibit on Indian boarding schools. The preeminent museum in Phoenix dedicates about a quarter of its space to a dark and forgotten era in our history. There’s a sadness to it that stays with you long after you’ve driven off.The Navajo textile exhibit is stunning. I spent an hour in there soaking in the beauty. Some of the pieces are over 130 years old.The kachina dolls are a good palette cleanser and appropriately sandwiched between. The heavier exhibits.I can’t wait to see what’s ahead for this 90 year old institution.

They do it well! Most impressive organization with an even more impressive collection. A must see. And the personal group tour is killer. Our tour guide was an incredible wealth of information and when she noticed a native-American in our group she invited him to fact-check what she was saying, and to also answer questions from the group, which he did willingly, enhancing the experience. And if youre hungry when you visit please have a meal right inside the compound at the museum cafe. A surprising menu with entrees that are close to gourmet at reasonable prices.

Exceptional museum that totally surpassed my expectations. They had a great deal for students—I think I paid $9 with my student ID—but I would have happily paid the full price considering the quality of this museum. The exhibit on the boarding schools is probably worth the price of admission alone—a well thought out, immersive, informative, and heartbreaking exhibit. Only downside was one of the tours we joined had a docent that I would describe as...under-informed—we quickly darted out of the [free] tour. They had quite a few going all day and Im sure many of the other docents are great we were just a little limited on time. All in all, this was an incredible visit and we both agreed one of the better museums weve visited recently, highly recommended!

Today I had the great pleasure of visiting the renowned Heard Museum in PhoenixArizona. The experience was really quite enjoyable, as there were many different exhibitionshoused in the maze of courtyards, balconies, elevators and sets f grandeur stairs. We even paidextra for the Henry Matisse collection and let me tell you it was worth every penny. Before weeven made it to the front entrance, we were entertained with a beautiful walk through an outdoorsculpture garden nestled in between the walls of the compound. The Architecture of the estate isvery traditional and open. Lush trees and refined landscaping almost eliminate the bustlingdowntown just feet away. Among the sculptures decorating the path the entrance is a beautifulset of reflecting fountains. Not one but two geometrical modern fountains and reflections poolssteal you attention right before you enter. We were given the opportunity to attend some tours of the exhibits but opted instead towander at our own leisure. In retrospect, the tours might have been less walking, as we had tobacktrack multiple times to ensure we saw every exhibit. Though it was fun, exploring the manycorridors and hallways of the beautiful building. If it doesn’t say employees only it’s free reign, and there is art hidden behind every accessible door.First on the self-guided tour was the Amazing Matisse collection. If you like tribal masks, and I sure do, then this is the collection for you. Now not only did this guy paint amazing stuff, but he had his own incredible collection of tribal masks. In one portion of the exhibit there werethese side by side presentations. On the wall were half masks, or damaged mask and then next tothem were Matisse paintings of the missing half or portions. His technique was so profound andlife like, I had to double and triple check with my guest to ensure indeed, yes, they were just flatpainting. His shadowing and 3d effects were incredulous to say the least. As we ventured further and further into this collection, the masks got bigger and more complex. Reading about theirorigins and uses took some time. We breezed through the rest of the museum, but here we reallyspent some time. This led to a few purchases on the beautiful gift shop I must say. Getting one ofhis original pieces would be something I enjoyed very much. I did score a cool mask print in the2d technique and I can’t wait to frame and hang it.The rest of the exhibits all had a theme. Indian tribes from all over Arizona as well as therest of western us including Alaska, were represented. In the galleries. Jewelry, baskets, babycradles and clothing were shown in styles from each of the many tribes we have in Arizona. Inthese collections were some really cool art and day to day tools from many hundreds of yearsago to even very recent art from local artisans. One of my favorite pieces from the collectionswas a rain suit made from seal intestines. It sounds gross, but it looked really cool and much likea plastic poncho. The ingenuity of the different tribes was amazing as they adapted to live inthese harsh environments without the modern conveniences we all live with today. After a few hours and many trips up and down stairs, we settled down at a small tableright next to one of the two reflecting pool and fountains. The weather was cool and sunny, andwe ate and discussed what we had seen. The Heard museum experience was much better than I had hoped for. I look forward to future visits and exhibitions.

The Heard Museum was a very pleasant experience. Upon arrival to the entrance we were greeted by the staff with a sanitizer station and complimentary supplies for COVID-19 precautions. They provided masks (which we didnt need as we had our own), a personal stylus (for the parts of the museum with a touch screen that we could keep or return afterwards), disposable gloves (entirely optional), and maps (to be able to follow through the museum). We provided proof of Indigenous descent and were let in where they provided arrows on the ground for social distancing. We got there for the last hour (it closes at 4:00pm on Thursday) and followed the trail through multiple Indigenous Nations of the southwest and along the way there were sanitizer stations (usually seen at an entrance to an exhibit). Towards closing time a guard came up to inform us the museum was closing soon, so we hurried on through the end of the Indian Boarding School exhibit. I wish we had arrived earlier because we didnt get to all of the exhibits.

The Heard Museum was founded in December 1929 and just recently celebrated its 90th anniversary. The museum is dedicated to the American Indian arts and cultures and in this regard it is in collaboration with the artists and tribal communities from the South East. Heard aims to be for presentation, interpretation and advancement of American Indian arts including the artistic and cultural themes. The members help Heard through the Guild and Council by sponsoring public programs. The museum has a board of trustees who oversee the mission and the future of the museum and also a tribal relation department who looks for parallel interests with tribes and nations. Heard has a mixture of long-term and changing exhibitions, outdoor galleries, performance spaces, and interactive learning sessions including events which draws more than 40,000 visitors annually. In the museum there is a courtyard cafe which is open to public and people can make reservations. There is also a coffee cantina which is for grab-and-go lunches.A great museum to visit and enjoy the collections.
