We originally went here because we had a brunch coupon and we enjoyed our meal. We decided we wanted to come back for dinner sometime. My spouse ended up having my surprise birthday party here. I had a great time. The staff is very nice and friendly and the food was great too! We will be going back to try their pulled pork sandwich.

Good service from wonderful folks. Its been a minute since I went by but, as I recall, I found it difficult to find something on the menu that seemed appetizing. Nothing bad but nothing appealing to my taste (sorry I cant be more specific.)I also recall having dinner with three friends and the four of us not being able to hear one another because of the echo. The tiles are lovely but they make acoustics incompatible with hearing.

Came here with hubby on a Thursday night for Oakland Comedy series! We were seated upstairs and had 2 different IPAs and monkey fingers. Efficient and fast service, good finger food and beer.Friendly staff and clean bathrooms. Lovely decor downstairs with lots of tiles and a mini fountain inside - WOW!Definitely want to come back!

Attended the Oakland Comedy show here held upstairs at the Spice Monkey. Its a small intimate venue and the food was delicious. Would thoroughly recommend the Vietnamese chickenballs and the blacked wedges, however at $10 I felt the wedges were somewhat overpriced. The cocktails were really strong. It was alcohol mixed with alcohol! You many need a soft drink to mix it with.

I just started going to this place to see the Comedy Oakland acts. What a cool place. If you havent been you should go check it out. I recommend this place to anyone and everyone. We all should support this business. From owner to staff to comics they put out a real good vibe. Its an enjoyable night out.

Its located in the best building in Oakland with one of my favorite murals. The food was very flavorful and Id order everything I had again (pork belly Asian tacos, cornmeal chicken fingers and spicy mint tea). The girl who helped me did not seem demonic despite her black monochromatic tattered clothing and Satanic Feminist t-shirt.

Will definitely be back! Tried their chicken sandwich and it was delicious and full of flavor! The overall place was perfect. The ambiance, the food and the drinks!

My experience is just based on the takeaway service; I live one block away and arrived to pick up my order before it was done, and still the food was all cold somehow. The flavours werent great either: the guac only tasted of lime and the chicken sandwich was incredibly dry. I did like the falafel and street tacos (even though they were cold).I wont be coming back, for the food anyway.

Excessive heat, the name says it all....I found the food too spicy I was there for a party and we tasted almost everything on menu, I love their fries... I did order a burger to go, very expensive to be the 1/2 the size of a hockey puck

I walked by this place and noticed they have a live jazz band on thursdays and comedy in the same building! During happy hour they also have $5 cocktails.I sat at the bar and the staff was great and helpful. There were no more seats for the bar upstairs and Miguel was kind enough to bring a chair up.

Wont go back for the food, the buns of the chicken sandwich where stal and the chicken was dry. You expect more then something that taste like days old food when you pay what they are asking for.

Not an overwhelming amount of menu items, which means what comes out of the kitchen is cooked to perfection. For a small place e they have a very well stocked bar, nice place to go for happy hour. Everyone there is extremely pleasant and professional. Noticed great teamwork by everyone there.

Great selection of Asian fusion type dishes at a standard lunch price. I came here with 6 coworkers at lunch on a Friday and they were able to seat us at a spacious and comfortable table in their upstairs area. Service was good, although they brought out 5 dishes at once and then waited about 5 minutes before bringing the last 2 dishes so we were kind of all sitting around waiting which is never good.I ordered the chicken wings with a citrus rub and the Webster St Asada skewer- both were delicious and I didn’t leave anything on my plate! I will want to come back here again with my partner.

Had the soup and salad for lunch. Largely meh. The soup was OK. It was a Thai coconut soup that really didnt have much flavor. The salad was pretty good but it was nothing to Yelp about.I will say the vast majority of the people in the party I was with ordered something with a little more flair and they all seem to enjoy their meal but for me Id rather have had a Double Double.

Went for a comedy show and dinner. The food was really good, and the service great. The prices were very reasonable. We were there for a little over 2 hours. We ate first, then watched the show. Great comedians, super funny. The only reason that they didnt get 5 stars was the heat. It was SO HOT!!! Very uncomfortable, and almost ruined the show, as we couldnt wait to get out of there.

The comedy show is worth the small cramped, no window room. It did get really hot with all the bodies and the people next to us were SO loud which made the experience awful throughout the night. They even decided to their flash on their phone which really distracted from the comedy show. I wish this place wouldve been bigger because the experience wouldve been alot nicer with more room. But again, the comedy was great, the host was awesome and the drinks were chill.

There salmon dinner is good, The margaritas are the BOMB!

You walk in needing guidance.You walk out kinda got it all figured out.Despite the lack of words from behind the bar or that little corner to the left, where employees hang out, you kinda wanna give it a go.Despite no menu in hand, the beer selection looks pretty good.Despite the stairs to upstairs seem daunting, you wanna follow the music.Do it, and dont expect the world.

Overpriced for not even mediocre food. It feels as though the menu was written years ago by someone who possibly then cared about food, but whoeever is now making it certainly doesnt. The ingredients tasted store bought and stale (pre-breaded fried chicken and stale bun for my chicken sandwich). Live in the neighborhood but definitely wont be back. I would have said so much to the management had anyone enquired about our food, but our very young waiter did not.

Most of the food we had was good, and the drink yummy, but the kale Cesar salad was disappointing. Maybe raw dino kale in a salad is just never a good idea. The space is beautiful and upstairs there is a separate venue for music or comedy.

Lamb Burger was fantastic! Perfect char, great bun and the beet salad on top complimented the burger beautifully! Good beer but not the widest selection.

Service is slow and there are more employees than customers... food is obviously pre cooked and cold when it arrives... Been here several times and sadly disappointed with it everytime.

This restaurant has a very charming atmosphere with good food. It is unique for the area in its cooking and the decor as it is in what was probably the front office decades ago of the Howden Building, a building that has exquisite tile work inside and out. The restaurant has a beautiful fireplace and wishing well inside from when it was a showroom. The quality of that kind of tile work is a lost art form in this part of the world. The owners of the restaurant have now opened an upscale beautiful market next door. Both are worth a visit.

I have been to spice monkey a couple times. The food is great and the venue is eclectic and very Oakland. We also appreciate the comedy nights upstairs. 5 shows a week and the prices are not too high!

Great dishes. Ive never been disappointed with a meal here and the wine selection is usually well chosen. I wish they had more space between tables in the front room.

Awesome food here! The Alfredo take was delicious!! Chicken skewers were a delicious apitizer as well. Service here was Mediocre not a very friendly staff but not rude by any means. Basically dont expect to be waited on hand and foot, just expect delicious food

Quirky, fun atmosphere, flavorful food, ok service. Came on a Wednesday night and it wasnt busy. Hostess asked if we had a reservation and the server seemed annoyed, but was accomdating. Food was good, but pricey for what you got. Then again, its Boston.

Oakland comedy here was great! Lots of great laughs. It does get a little hot.

Came here early for comedy show and got dinner. The food was mediterranean inspired and excellent. The plates are small but well prepared and taste excellent. Dont be fooled by when you walk in. The layout of the downstairs feels more like just a bar. The food is worth the trip alone.

They automatically put gratuity in your bill as though its mandatory. Turned a $10 drink into $16 and some change.

Veggie pot pie was gross, mac and cheese was cheesy and fine, turkey burger was okay. Service was quick given that there was only one waiter for the entire restaurant, which meant they were ridiculously under-staffed. Beer was delicious.

We came here for the comedy club and that was a blast! Weve been to two Comedy Machines where comedians compete against each other and both times the comedians were hilarious. You can order food and drinks while enjoying your show or you can eat at the restaurant below. If youre coming for a show, its best to get there earlier because it gets really crowded (its not a very large room). The first time we got there 30 mins before the show and had a few appetizers at the restaurant, but the second time we got there late and barely found seats that werent in the very front.

I met a friend here one evening just for appetizers and tea. We ordered the Mosaic Mezze Platter which was good, but a bit pricey. The atmosphere is funky but comfortable with a lot of natural light up front. They do have a space upstairs that was closed for a private party but Im guessing that would be convenient for small gatherings.

Based on dinner, I was very unimpressed. Seems like a great place with nice staff, but my overcooked and lukewarm ribs seemed like they were originally cooked many days ago. Sides were bland to boot. Id stick to drinks and snacks at this place.

We came at a busy time at lunch yet service and food were all great! I will keep coming back :)

Came for dinner during restaurant week. Tried three different prix fix menus. Good variety of flavor pallets. Good cocktails too.

When this was Spice Monkey it was great. When the space was taken over by Howden, they changed the menu, increased prices, and ruined it.

Terrible customer service upstairs in the comedy club. The food was bad, the wait staff was frantic and needed to be reminded many times to bring a drink, or ketchup, and we had to wait ten minutes for our bill when we left. We will not be coming back. Avoid this place.like the plague!
