We tried to hike up to Toby’s Rock Mountain and the overlook on the orange and purple trails but couldn’t find the trail head from the Spruce Brook Road parking lot. Storm damage from tropical storm Isaias was not yet cleared. We did find the white, orange and red trails to a different overlook which was awesome. The red trail that connects to Spruce Brook Road is pretty steep in places. Take the white trail to the orange/red trail to the overlook if you want a moderate hike.

Forest seemed nice but paths are often narrow with a huge drops that made us uncomfortable with smaller kids. Probably a great place for older kids and adults but we ended up leaving after having to turn around on two trails because it didnt feel safe for the young ones. We had a 3, 7 and 11 year old with us. The older one was fine but the other two not so much. I would go back again to try it out but without the kids.

This park is really beautiful and is very well marked. This is a great park to go hiking with the kids or go fishing with the family. It is also a great park to go canoeing or kayaking too. If you are recovering from some form of injury this is a moderate to easy trail.

This was a wonderful place, with all different levels of hikes, easier walks, for the beginners, and nice moderate trails, to get a good work out, and enjoy the steps. If you know how to follow markings on the trees, its well marked, just keep focused and youll stay on track. There was an amazing river, with spots along the way for people being able to jump in, and enjoy the cool refreshing water. And when you get the top, you see the amazing view, with the mountains in the distance, lakes right below you, at the bottom of the cliff, and the highway, with cars wizzing by.I truly enjoyed it! Its a hike that I would come back to.Just one down, I did get stung by a hornet, it hurt for 5-10 minutes, and was good after that, so watch out.

Beautiful área for hiking. Naugatuck State Forest is a Connecticut state forest consisting of five separate blocks in the towns of Oxford, Beacon Falls, Naugatuck, Bethany, Cheshire, Hamden, Seymour, and Ansonia. The five blocks are the Mount Sanford, East, West, Quillinan Reservoir, and Great Hill blocks.

Better with others than alone. Clean and beautiful, love every part of the walk. There is a waterfall that is easily accessible from either a rocky climb or a path way. The water is clean and cold in a good way.

I had so much fun, it is a beautiful place with a lot of peace. The bad; I saw people walking their dogs without leash and some did not pick up the poop. Other than that the forest is quiet and walkable. The only thing that worries me is that hunting is permitted and I heard many gun shoots during my hike.

Today Friday July 19 I took a gamble in that the rain this area had the other day was enough to wake up Sprue Brook Falls. It was a trip well worth the perils of moss covered slippery rocks. The brook and falls came too life right before my eyes. A hidden gem and if you enjoy waterfalls this is a must stop. Take advantage after a decent day of rain.

There is a lovely and very runnable blue blazed trail that runs for about 6 miled through this forest. Its usually not crowded and the trail is quite scenic, especially considering how close it is to major roads. This is an ideal Trail for trail runners who want something more runnable than the Quinnipiac Trail or the Regicides Trail. Its less Rocky, with a lot more dirt and wider, flatter areas than you normally see in Connecticuts blue blazed trails.

I’ve been going to Naugatuck State Forest for 36 years and in my opinion it’s a bit of a hidden gem in Connecticut. There’s plenty of trails that are an easy hike for most folks. For photographers theres plenty of wildlife, natural formations and the popular waterfalls that regularly appears on Instagram and Facebook.

Beautiful place to go for a walk. The tornados that came through the area snapped the tops of a bunch of trees off but the area is still beautiful. Be careful though. There is a bunch of wildlife in the area. I wouldnt go for a walk by myself with reports of bobcats and bears in the area. Deer during rutting season arent too happy to have us around either. Thats usually around the beginning of October to the beginning of December.

Naugatuck State forest is a wonderful spot for a day-hike. Parking is a little confusing: if you follow Googles directions, itll take you to a dirt lot that leads to the white trail, which is wide enough to walk side-by-side and take in the scenery without tripping over your feet. Other trails branch off from it, but the markings can go unnoticed if youre not looking out for them. Parking in a lot about half a mile past the shooting range gets you close to the orange and blue trails. The trails have a lot of variety in difficulty, terrain, and scenery and you can make the hike as short or long as you want. Downside is the aforementioned shooting range, which can put a damper in if youre looking for peace and quiet.

Grew up going to the mountain. The cabin there was originally my grandmothers. I love bringing my kids there and watching them enjoy nature the way I did as a child but its a shame that people destroy it with garbage! Theres broken glass everywhere, tires and just about anything else people dont want to pay to get rid of at the dump. Of course D.E.E.P is quick to remove you right at sunset but hasnt put any effort towards cleaning. I put five stars because its a beautiful place and Ive loved it since I was a kid. I just wish the other people that go to enjoy it would respect it more
