Access inside the monument is closed due to COVID-19 but the views are beautiful. The walk to/from the monument is only about 10 minutes each way on a well maintained path. If you’re passing through the area, it’s a good spot to stop for a bathroom break and to stretch your legs.

This State park is truly a hidden gem. GPS will take you on a winding, steep drive through the MD countryside up to the park and its a really nice, secluded area that is well maintained by the Park people. Walk up a gravel path where you will come upon the Appalachian Trail! A bit further up the path youll come to the summit and a large stone dome erected to the memory of George Washington. Walk around to the back side of the dome and youll come upon a spectacular panoramic view of the little town of Boonsboro, MD off in the distance.

Short hike with great views. If you decide to hike this portion of the Appalachian Trail note the trail is rocky and more like steps so if you have older people in the group or your balance stinks bring your walking sticks. Also, the monuments staircase echos really well. Id suggest telling your young children that if you speak into this space that they can talk to George Washington. If you stand behind them and speak softly and change your voice a little it echoes. If you do this well enough your child will be fooled and think they spoke with George Washington.

You should definitely view this simple but incredible monument. The original Washington’s Monument. That is how much this man meant to Americans of the local area. People who lived during his time and were personally aware of his legacy. Beautiful park and the AT passes right through it. Check it out before it is outlawed and torn down.

Fantastic place to bring the family. There’s an amazing playground for kids, and a huge field to play in near the parking lot. The trail to the monument is short and an easy walk with signs along the way that provide interesting George Washington trivia. The view from the back side of the monument and the top is spectacular. You can see all the way to Pennsylvania and the ski slopes on the far mountains. If not for trees and another hill in the way, you could probably see all the way to Antietam National Battlefield as well. Definitely a must see location on a clear day.

A beautiful park with an absolutely amazing view at the top where the monument is located. The Appalachian Trail runs along the top of the mountain. Has camping for youth as well. The view is worth a trip for sure. Also, along the trail to the monument there are signs recording Washingtons history. Wonderful open grass space near parking with a playground, several buildings to have a picnic located along the foot trail to the monument. Pictures are worth a thousand words!

I went for the views, which were awesome. I didn’t go for the historical aspect, but it does a great job honoring the greatest for our Founding Fathers. Only reason why it’s a three star is I find it ridiculous you have to pay to traverse a road in desperate need of repair.

This was an unexpected find for me as I was travelling north on Interstate 81. It was a little out of the way but a welcome detour. I enjoyed the informational plaques about George Washington and was surprised by the view at the end of the short walk. It looked like a great place to camp and enjoy the outdoors.

Like all parks this one is wonderful. I barely remember it but it seems like there might have been a monument to George Washington here, not as big as the one in D.C. but pretty good size. Hills. I remember hills. Hills for walking up. Hills for walking down. OH I remember that monument (I looked at the group of pictures you can click on upper left corner here). Plaque says first George Washington Monument I think. 1824 ?

A nice spot with historical significance. The Appalachian trail transits through, north and south but its pretty rough - not suitable for small kids or strollers. Toilets were not operational in late February and the porta-potty was very full. Nasty. Be prepared. Overall, a nice place to visit with some beautiful views from the monument area.

I went here when the monument was under construction. There was no indication that it was under construction until after you had paid to get in the park (honor system- envelope at gate), so even after walking up to the monument, you can’t go in/on the monument to see the better view. I’m not sure if it’s still under construction but if so, I’d pass on seeing this until the construction is completed.

Small Park with a short trail that takes you to the Monument. The Monument have a spiral staircase that leads you to a small landing and gorgeous views. You can find hikers in your path since this is part of the Appalachian Trail. The visitor center have a small museum and an attendant. There are some RV spots, grilles and tables for picnic. Plenty of parking space, clean bathrooms and a lot of space for kids to play.

Id like to come back and try more of the AT.

Washington Monument State Park is interesting for two reasons:1) The Appalachian Trail goes through it proving that there is natural beauty in Maryland. The views in this park into the valley are beautiful.2) The OG Washington Monument. More than 50 years before the Washington Monument was built on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., the people near Middletown, Maryland built a stone tower on a hill called the Washington Monument. 500 people built it in one day and it still stands as the very first monument named after George Washington. As you walk up to the monument, you can learn about key dates associated with the first president.Theres a small visitors center that walks people through the history of this state park (note: the center is closed during the winter).

A hidden Gem - I found this Washington Monument when I was looking on Google Map for a place to take my pups. I hesitated a little, because it looked like I needed to travel into the woods to get there. I really wanted to see the monument, so I took my chances. As it turned out, the road to the entrance of the Washington Monument Park was interesting. It is a small road through an old residential neighborhood in the mountains. The entrance with the gate to the park isnt the entrance to take. Take the entrance next to it with a small road. If the park entrance is on your left, pass the entrance and take the first road right after the entrance on your left. Drive ahead, and youll see the entrance with a metal post for entrance fee. It has envelops provided for you to put the entrance fee in, and a tag for your car. When I got there, the post was filled, and there was a stack of envelops sitting on top. They need to make a bigger post that can take more envelops with entrance fee. I always wonder if someone would steal the money. I hope not.Anyway, once I paid my entrance fee, I drove down the 1 way road into the park. The park is very spacious and clean. It has a visitor center, bathrooms, and plenty of parking. When facing the visitors center, the trail is on the right. The trail is very well kept, and it has signs along the way with historic information. Before reaching the monument, there is a sign on the right to the Appalachian Trail. Keep walking, and you will see the monument in front of you. The back of the monument (on your right) has an amazing view of the area. You can take the spiral stairs up to the top of the monument for a better view. The entire distance from where I parked - which is passed the visitors center and the bathroom - is 0.62 miles round trip. The trail is gravel, and in a way, you can take a wheelchair to the monument, but there are some steps at the beginning of the trail.
