Whats the hate for?! Honestly. Its a fab YMCA. I love the sauna. Always clean, friendly staff, used machines and got in and out. Never a bad experience and Im surprised to see 3 stars. My favorite gym in the madison area so far - matches the cost. Foam rollers available too! Whats not to love!

Just finished series of weekly swimming instruction classes. As a beginner I must say the instruction was very good. Approach was tailored to my needs and I learned a great deal. I highly recommend. Staff was professional and also supportive.

Staff is typically friendly and helpful. Facility is well used. Cleanliness is lacking. Set up of fitness center is ok. Private trainers and classes can be disruptive during busy hours in the fitness center. The fitness center is short on open floor space. Locker rooms tend to be gross. Expanded cleaning would earn an extra star. Gymnasium is small and lacks spectator space for youth sports. Also needs a deep cleaning. Racquetball courts! But not well maintained. Cost effective for a family when considering all programs. If you dont have a family, I recommend a membership at a different gym.

No heat at all in the building for the past few days. Also a horrible sewage-like smell was permeating throughout the older section of the building; I could barely stand it, and was surprised people werent in a hurry to get in and out. The staff neither acknowledged the issues nor apologized for any inconvenience. The lower level feels dirty and the lounge area desperately needs to be updated. Chairs and sofas have stains and tears in them. A man in his swimsuit walked into the lounge area to get coffee; which was off-putting, and additionally a health code violation. The front desk staff are not particularly welcoming towards members and visitors. The maintenance and custodial staff were more friendly than the customer-service oriented employees. The workout facilities are average. There seem to be a variety of offerings for all ages and fitness levels. The womens locker room and restroom area have a confusing layout, and the facilities are smelly and unkempt. There is nothing particularly outstanding about this YMCA location other than its large parking lot, location and accessibility.

We are really enjoying the perks of membership, such as a free consultation with a personal trainer, and access to the pool, weight room, many exercise machines, and fun classes. I appreciate how much the Y gives back to the community as well.

My wife, my 1 year old daughter and I have been members for a few months and have found that this place has been an awesome value for the service. Weve had a good experience with the young children swimming lessons and child care while we exercise. Its not a swanky gym, but the place is clean and full of kind staff.

This Y is expensive in comparison to the quality of other YMCAs Ive been to in WI. The staff are incredible kind and friendly, and there seems to be a strong positive focus on youth activities. I am a strong supporter of the YMCA, but for what I pay each month, it would be nice to have updated locker areas, especially the showers- which are pretty gross. I do like the hours and the use of the sauna, but again for the price am reconsidering my membership.

I love belonging to a club where the mission is greater than just profit. I love the diversity of the membership: gender, race, disability, fitness level, sexual orientation age level, income level. Everyone fits in at the Y. I enjoy the classes and the workout area. I love seeing youth playing basketball at night.

The equipment is a bit run down and place reminds me of a high-school gym but its serviceable. The staff can either be really nice or somewhat apathetic but that doesnt really matter. Their prices are a bit expensive but they offer lots of classes and services. The clientele is a wide mix of everyone. Definitely reccomend going if you have a membership through your workplace.

Several years ago now, when my then 3-year-old attended the Y East preschool program. One day I went to pick him up early, and through the window saw my child being violently dragged across the room by a teacher who had lost her temper at him. I was shaking & in tears when I complained to the front desk. That night I got a call from the manager who assured me it would be taken very seriously. I never heard anything else about it. 6 weeks later, my child was expelled with 2 days notice. I regret, to this day, not escalating it outside the Y.

The Madison East Y is failing to meet its responsibilities in providing instructors for water exercise classes on the schedule. East manager and the Y administration is doing a terrible job of recruiting and maintaining water class instructors, cancelling classes because of this lack of regular and substitute instructors.I have been a paying member for 25 + years, and have never been so disgusted with the operation of the programs. When will the Y Board recognize that the management is forcing members to look elsewhere for exercise programs?

Edit: Met with Jason. Reasonable, easy to talk to. Willing to make some changes with staff training, and work with me.Highlights: Do not be a member of you only have one small child. Do not be a member if you are a single parent. Do not be a member if you value communication.Member for couple of years. Raised price on family membership and charge for childcare. Told me I could keep the benefits of cost breaks for my child on lessons (ie my child would still be a member)if I moved to a single membership with child. I was told today, two months later, that my child isnt a member and that a membership for her is the same cost with either one or two parents. So, I guess, they dont support single parents. Nice. They also are angling to push away stay at home moms with the child care being an extra cost.I have a lot more examples, and when I have more time, Ill add them. The facilities are old. The parking lot is dangerous. You must go up the stairs to get to the workout equipment, but the changing rooms are downstairs. This y is for seniors and students. I recommend finding alternative solutions.

The staff, including the CEO Paul VanderVelde, were extremely unprofessional and disrespectful towards me. I left a review of my personal experience on the YMCA’s Facebook page, they then decided to not provide summer care for my children and proceeded to LIE about how I didn’t follow their code of conduct. For an organization that’s supposed to build strong families, they’ve done nothing but cause me unnecessary stress and disrupt my children’s lives! I’m disgusted in Paul’s actions and unprofessionalism. I STRONGLY recommend NOT utilizing any of the YMCA’s services if you want to be treated with respect!

I wouldnt personal recommend them. if youre using them for daycare make sure your double check your bill & payments to make sure your payments are going to your personal bill for your child and your not paying someone else bill. That is what happened to me. They connected my ex boyfriend bill who I was not even my husband. for the days that he put the kid into daycare on his own time opposite of my days. and they charge me his bill and told me I could take him to court to get it back if I wanted it. Unbelievable I dont know how its legal but thats what they did.Over 500.00. I got to pay for somebody else that wasnt even in my contracted days. before I cancel daycare with them all together. along with a line list of issues of child protection in their care. Example... I came to the school after work to pick my daughter up as normal. except for this particular time child was sitting out in the road with 5 other child throwing rocks in the road. Not one staff member anywhere insight of the children. I believe at that time my child was 6 years old. And when I asked for a explanation what I got told as they were doing a carwash and sent the little kids not big kids out there was signs that nobody was carrying nor were they insite. along with no adult supervision while the rest of them were in the back of the school. Well sad to say I guess that day apparently that situation have taken place a number of times according to some of the Parents that I spoke with who are also upset that the children were out on the road unsupervised. Later a number of us parents were called and told to pay for a windshield that was cracked but nobody knows who broke. Of course when you have young 5 kids unsupervised nobody knows who did it. Needless to say that one bill they did not get me on. Id be damned if Im going to pay for something when Im paying for somebody to be watching my children and their not. They were the responsible party except for they wanted to take no accountablity and they wanted to put it on the parents. Theres many more things I just dont have that much time in the day. And not good at protection from child bullies. Unfortunately my daughter still bears the scars. So much more. I wish I could tell you what happened to my friends grandchild while in their care at one of our local parks. Fortunately Im not at liberty to state what happened but I guarantee you you agree you think your decision because that day I swore my children would never go there again. Im deeply sorry for what happened to them and would never take that risk again for my own child to stay there. I had lost the feeling of safety and supervision for my child at that point. Now Im going to say this is been a couple years since we have been with them at this point and Im only giving my personal opinion from my experience and unfortunately experience of what happened to my friends grandchild that I was told. I pray things have changed there. And Id really like to blieve that they have at this point. But one never knows Please make sure you do all your research before you accept any daycare provider. thats your precious babies . please remember not to take one for convenient or easy without checking it out.

I’m a member because they have a masters swim program. The pool here is horribly mismanaged, often unclean and when they do clean it the chemical smell is enough to knock you over. I’ve witnessed the pool deck being cleaned by spraying it down and washing all the dirt directly in the pool with people in it! Simply unbelievably clueless.
