I learnt that Los Angeles is kinda pioneer and leader in contemporary art from my visit to this museum. Museum is easily accessible (on the metro get off at Pershing square. a short walk and a $1 ride on angels flight) and entry is free for general admission. Large spacious viewing galleries on a single floor. Nice patterns and decoration art. Loved the FedEx glass box real-time art.

Always impressive... and now it’s free but they give you the option of donating with card when you check in or at the lobby in cash. The minimum suggested donation is 7 dollars per person. I went to the “with pleasure” exhibit and it was awesome. The whole area downtown is a bit of dead on weekends outside of the museums, but is lit during the week. Great place to do a lap at the museum, get a drink near by or at grand central market. There is a mini floating trolley you can take to the bottom of the hill to grand central which is a dollar or .50 cents with your tap card. Really fun. I like to hit up the broad at the same time. This place is chill vibes also, the gift shop is but expensive

Its a wonderful museum that is free to visit! Right across from the broad. They have some interesting pieces, but the quilts are my favorite part. The only thing is, its a rather small museum. I walked through it in less than 45 minutes.

Free on Thursday. Lovely artworks. They have a whole room specific for Mark Rothko, artworks from Jackson Pollock, and many others as well. New artists work are also exhibited here which is interesting. Works of olden day photographers (Black & White) The free tour (given by Alex) was really lovely as well as they get more in depth about the artworks.

Timing is everything. The current exhibit didnt fully catch my eye. I attend free nights on Thursdays between 5-8 pm. The gallery is one level, so you wont spend more than an hour or 2. The staff were kind and assisted with questions. They offer tour guides that are flexible, meaning, you dont have to stay on the tour or you can hop into it.

I love this museum! The person who did the Museum tour was so amazing! She had so much energy and passion for the art. At one point she was just touring me and one other person and she still had a lot of energy! She did an amazing job helping me think about art in my own way. She was also open to everyone interpreting the art how they wanted to see it and very supportive! Thank you!

This museum has a wonderful array of artwork from so many talented artist. The Rothko room holds so much weight to it, that one cannot help but just sit in meditation amongst all the pieces. Whenever I visit Los Angeles it is a destination that is extremely difficult to pass up. If you enjoy art even a little this museum is a must see. I cannot recommend it enough.

After a short wait, I walked in listening to Max Richter on headphones. It was all interesting, almost amusing. And then I saw a piece of art, it almost looks like a giant black canvas. Suddenly I could not hold back the tears. I dont know what boo do this extraordinary pizza by possessed, but it was extraordinary powerful. I wandered around the museum unaffected, I came back to that piece I dont have the exact same effect on me. I have never been to MoCA before, and now, I will return for life.

If I visit a city, I have to visit its museum. The Moca is beautiful even though its a bit small. I loved the arts inside. The staff is friendly and helpful, they will fix your issues if there are any. When you purchase the ticket you have granted a visit to The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. I really appreciated and I suggest you to visit it too.

I feel compelled to leave a review once I saw this museum only has 3 stars. The MoCA and there second location at the Geffen is hands down one of my absolute favorite art collections in LA, and I see a lot of art. Their permanent collection is gorgeous, thought provoking, and varied (and pieces do change from time to time!). Their rotating exhibitions change every few months and are always relevant and energizing. A lot of these reviews are about the museum being closed. Because they do change exhibitions every few months sometimes half of the museum will be closed so plan ahead and you’ll be good!

Been coming here long before the Broad across the street existed. Much better than the Broad. No booking in advance needed for a visit. This museum and LACMA are the two best art museums in Los Angeles. Then comes the Norton Simon Art Museum (technically in Pasadena), the Geffen, the Broad, the Getty, and the others.

Everytime I come to LA I go check out whats happening at the MOCA. Its not a huge Museum but big enough to spend a few hours in if you enjoy looking at art. The museum is divided into two sections, the modern and contemporary art. I come specifically to see whats showing in their fully rotating contemporary arts gallery. Ive seen some great exhibits there. I definitely recommend the MOCA if youre curious about what artists are currently up to (plus a few years back, Ive seen Warhol exhibits here too). Great stuff, I always leave inspired.

Half the museum was a comprehensive retrospecitve of Kerry James Marshall and it was completely fascinating. Took the one-hour tour of the exhibit from an artist. Was unusually informative and helpful to get perspective and background on the artist and his work. Really enjoyable and opened my eyes to an artist I was not familiar with. There were really contemporary arts. This time MOCA exhibits works of Gala Porras-Kim who was born Bogota, Colombia but lives and works in Los Angeles. The works varies widely from sculptural works to ephemeral works. Also other artistss works were there. Video arts were hard to understand but many patterns on cloth were pretty. The admission fee is free every Thursday at 5 to 8 pm. by courtesy of Wells Fargo.

Worth taking a visit to MOCA, I spent about 3 hours viewing their collection and enjoyed it greatly!Sadly, I was not ableto see the other part of the museum - which I guess was one mile away according to the attendant? This kind of bummed me out as I felt I paid for a ticket to only see half of what they offered. I didn’t have time to walk even more. If they could offer a shuttle to the other space that would be really great!

Review №68

My opinion about it, has many works that are quite abstract and you have to have a lot of knowledge to value the works of the artists. It is likely that the average person does not like this kind of art. There are very interesting works but there are also others that are quite boring (just things arranged randomly in a room). The museum is small and the entrance costs USD $ 15 with the possibility of visiting another museum building, far from it. The staff unfriendly, but you cannot expect much from people who just pass by a door every time.

The Museum is pretty cool. It is small and concise. It focuses on Black people and most of the art is of literal black people(not even brown). I didnt like how repeative the arts were. I am a big fan of various forms of modern/contemporary art ranging from abstract expressionism with Kandinsky to Surrealism with Dali to pop art with Warhol but the collection at MOCA is somewhat disappointing. The collection is also pretty small for the price you end up paying (compared to RISD museum or Portland Art Museum) but thats typical for most things in LA
