Due to the Covid19, this facility is closed for in person visits. Virtual tours are available. The number is located in the attached picture. You could call this facility a historic part of Mormon history. Mormon is a nickname, but not the name of the church. The actual name of the church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This jail is where the 1st prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was imprisoned for almost 6 months. To learn and understand even more of the history of this amazing church, check out the virtual tours being offered at the Independence Visitor Center for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

This was a truly beautiful experience. One of the tour guides said that Jeffrey R Holland had described it as a prison temple. The Spirit was celestial room strong as I sat and read sections of the Doctrine and Covenants that were received there. I wish I could have stayed and read longer.I was traveling on business and had a few hours before my flight out, and Im so glad I spent it at Liberty Jail. Highly recommended!

Wow! I had not expected the old jail preserved inside a new building. Or the historical figures and history lesson broadcast/presentation. A must see for any Mormon and interesting for non-Mormon also.

Spent many of evenings here at the Historic Liberty Jail as a teenager having lived several years in the area. I can not pass up an opportunity for a visit while traveling through the area and love the different perspectives of the missionaries who give the tours on the events that took place the winter months of 1838/39. Informative, interactive, and uplifting.

Great free attraction for local history. To have guides that share history of religious leaders. They arent pushy though. They wont push their religion on you. They have a neat display that shows a life size jail looked like back in the 1800s. Its kinda sad but has a cool message at the end. We left feeling peace.

My family and I got a late start on a long trip and ended up in hours of summertime traffic between St. Louis and Kansas City. As we neared KC, we decided to call it a day rather than brave the many hours across Nebraska. Even though it was late in the day, I opted to veer of the path a bit and visit Liberty Jail, which I had never visited.Liberty Jail is an LDS (Mormon) site where founder Joseph Smith was imprisoned for a time. The site features a tour, at the end of which is a recreation of the jail built on the original foundation and using some of the stones left over from the original building. The staff at the Jail were super accommodating. I brought five road-weary kids with me, and the overall peace and quiet of the place was really nice, and the staff were great with the kids, too. The tour and presentation are about thirty minutes, and we were impressed with the jail and the accompanying audiovisual presentation, which had some really impressive sound effects. Im glad we stopped.

I had always wanted to visit this historic site of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. My plane arrived in Kansas City several hours before I needed to be in the city, so I took an Uber to this jail. It was inspirational and moving to be in the place where the Prophet Joseph spent 4 1/2 months on spurious charges. I particularly enjoyed the lessons about how we can cheerfully endure our trials.

Standing on hallowed ground, made sacred by a prophets suffering, one is reminded that all our trials have purpose, and out into perspective, they will be of a short duration. There are volunteers ready to answer questions and tell the story of what happened here. There is a recreation of the jail (made from the actual stones that made up the original) in which Joseph Smith was unjustly imprisoned for many months, ironically in the little town of Liberty, MO.

The tour is short and sweet, the meat of it being preachy, with more of a bible study than a history class vibe to it. But the guides do know their stuff so ask away. They wont say anything but consider dressing nice (close toed shoes and a non raunchy/profane/low brow t-shirt) if you dont want it to be... awkward.

Very cool. Great to learn about the history in Liberty area. The walls are about 4 feet thick. Entrance to the jail was through a hole in the ceiling. If jails were like this today, I think wed have a lot less crime. No one would want to be in a place like this. Another interesting thing is that this jail was abandoned after years of wearing down and was converted to an ice house for a few years and then a home was built over it, keeping the original floor of the jail. This helped preserve the floor.

Excellent stop. There is a 30 minute tour detailing the history of the area with respect to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and of course a replica of Liberty Jail where the first Prophet, Joseph Smith had been imprisoned on spurious charges for four months. The volunteer missionaries were very knowledgeable and tailored their historical teaching well to the young age of our children. We would happily stop again.

The elder missionary couple, the Langfords, really know the material and primary history relevant to the events memorialized. Elder Langford in particular answered several questions I asked outside the normal boundaries of the tour and provided meaningful and insightful answers that expanded my understanding of the historical contexts, providing a backdrop to stories Ive heard all my life, making the events far more tangible and human. Ask about the website he has put together with the primary sources.

Absolutely amazing site! The spirit has significantly replaced the darkness that used to reside here. You get a very nice tour and this is a must do in the area! I also highly recommend the Kansas City Temple and the Independence Visitors Center. If you have time, drive 4 hours to Nauvoo in July during Pageant season and see both Pageants (8:30 PM each night with the Nauvoo Pageant on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday and the British Pageant Wednesday and Friday. Fun country fair activities start at 7 PM. You can watch a British Pageant dress rehearsal at 8:30 PM on Mondays but there is no country fair.)
