I didnt get very much time to go throughout the entire museum. I was just killing some time between appointments. But this place is awesome! And I definitely cant wait to go back again and again and again. I love art . & this place really inspired me..I definitely recommend this place very highly and could not give it enough good Stars...The parking garage is a little expensive but its definitely offset by the cost of a free trip to the art museum...I cant wait to go back.

Excellent museum, well laid out, easy to follow the flow. LOVE the Carravagio they have on display. Personal favorite artist & his detail is impressive. John the Baptist in the Wilderness wouldnt have clean feet & his total disrepair is so believable. Many exceptional works of art in this collection. Plan to return & spend more time.Warning: if the Pompeii exhibit is still here, the realism may cause distress.

Absolutely fantastic, a true treasure right here in KC. Ive lived here over 30 years and had never been. Spent 4 hours with my wife here on a day out and only got one floor in. If you live in KC this is a must see. Be a tourist in the city and go here. The best part... Its free!! (Other than the parking garage).

I was so surprised the admission was free! But I would definitely recommend that everyone make a donation to help offset the social distancing/ COVID modifications they’ve had to make.

I grew up in KC and the Nelson-Atkins is a tapestry that connects me to my childhood. From the first field trip where the guide told us that all the art work belonged to us, the people (But the people cannot take art home, I asked) to the job I had which including picking up trash and weeding the lawns at 15, I cannot imagine a life without this beautiful art gallery. Because it asks for donations, there were times in my life that I was welcomed into the N-A when I was at my brokest. There were times when I was flush and would donate much more. No matter my income level, I was welcomed here and eventually married a man who loved art even more than me. We spent many an afternoon sitting in front of Thomas Hart Bentons incredible Persephone (whom I did a report on for an art class that got me an A!) and we sat for hours just taking in Van Goghs Olive Trees without a clue there was a grasshopper in it the whole time. Ive taken friends there who had never even been to an art gallery before and every single one of them walked away in awe. Thank you for this gift to the Kansas City area. I dont live there anymore, but every time I pass through, I always make a stop and visit my old friends while chuckling at the shuttlecock that has always confused me, but Ive since embraced as part of my gallery. No matter where I go, the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art is my gallery and Ill always love the building, the art, and yes, the shuttlecock too.

One of the finest museums in the United States. The NAM’s collection of European paintings is probably only surpassed by 2-3 other museums in larger cities, and the fact that they own a Caravaggio, makes them the envy of much larger museums. Very nice gift shop, and admission is free.

Recommended as one of the top Art Museums in the country, I had my doubts after living in Washington DC and visiting NYC galleries. I was pleasantly surprised by the modern art in the newer addition. The Nelson Atkins, will always be Kansas City‘s greatest treasure. Tucked away off of one of the busiest shopping districts in Kansas City, it is hands-down one of the best art museums I’ve visited in the Midwest. I recently attended the annual gala for the museum, spending time with people from the National Geographic and the senior management of the Nelson Atkins. It was a wonderful evening filled with fun, frivolity, and education. It is well worth the trip if you get the chance. I don’t know if I can say enough wonderful things about the Nelson. First, it’s free to the public. The volunteers are excellent and knowledgeable, and there are so many beautiful pieces that they want to tell you about. When I went most recently, I actually got to put on gloves and touch one of the pieces (The doors of paradise). The outdoor sculpture garden is also extremely beautiful, and lots of local activities are held on the line. The Nelson-Atkins is an artists wonderland! From modern and contemporary pieces to ancient Greek sculptures o renaissance era masterpieces to medieval art to oriental.... if you like a variety of art or only a set style, youll undoubtedly find it here! Very disappointed with our experience. The galleries and exhibits are great! That said..... we went in with our two year old daughter in a stroller and were constantly folliwed by the people working in the gallery! We would be constantly followed and would have the gallery people blantly stare at us and circle around us until we left. Never once was my daughter out of our hands or running around or touching any of the exhibits! It felt very uninviting and not welcoming. As a parent in a difficult time with so few options to entertain a child i thought the museum would be a good way to entertain her. If bringing a child to the museum is an issue then please post a sign stating NO CHILDREN ALLOWED! Im glad it didnt cost us anything because i would have been asking for a refund for the way we were treated. Next time i will have to find another place to take my child.

We didnt get a chance to go in due to time constraints but we were able to check out the exterior shuttlecock and human bronze sculptures. They are all amazing and they are worth stopping by to check out. The artists were so creative coming up with the idea to strategically place the shuttlecocks throughout the enormous grounds. Each one weighs 5,500 pounds and stand 18 ft tall. You can park on the grounds on E 45th St between Oak and Rockhill and quickly jump out and walk over to the different sculptures. I recommend driving around the perimeter of the grounds so you can see the shuttlecocks scattered around the area.

Another absolute must visit in Kansas City. The variety of the pieces available, the many galleries, and the drama (a cricket found in a classic painting?!?!). The two options for food (a cafe and a restaurant) are great and restful places to enjoy a cup’a. The grounds are worth wandering and the space invites creative minds to a place of contemplation and creativity. The curators are very present, helpful, and intent on their jobs. This is a must see when you are in Kansas city and I would recommend it to people that dont consider themselves Art people. The best part is, it is always free to see everything (about 95%) but the tour exhibit.I am not generally an art person and always enjoy going to Nelson Atkins because it is not just paintngs but everything from a mummy to silver plates, to Greek and Roman sculptures and modern paintings. If you want to take your time and look at each piece you should give yourself at least 6 hours to see everything. If you look while continually walking you can get through everything in about 2 hours (but that is really moving). My recommendation is to look at the map and go to the sections that interest you and then leave when you are tired. If you have kids hit the outside exhibits like the glass maze and giant Birdies to wear them out before going inside. Kids will find things they like and the staff doesnt over hover kids given there are no barriers between people and the art for many of the rooms.Parking on the streets around the museum is free but watch the signs for hours and no parking areas to prevent a ticket. Parking in the museum garage costs but is more convenient. The restaurant in the museum is supposed to be very good though I have never eaten there.

I love me a free expansive art museum with giant shuttlecocks. When visiting KC, the Nelson-Atkins is a must!Honestly, I probably could have spent a couple days here. There are so many exhibit halls from photography to ancient Asia to classic paintings to furniture. Theres certainly something here for everyone... and again, for free! Though, of course, donations are appreciated and the rotating special exhibitions cost a little dough. Youll find artists from locally cherished Midwesterners to household icons (Lichtenstein, Warhol, Rembrandt, Monet) and up-and-coming contemporary artists manipulating all mediums.Theres also artist-themed mini golf, a cafe, restaurant, museum gift shop, and all the other things that round out a day or two for locals and tourists alike.
