Fantastic! Great exhibits about Iowa culture. Large collection of animals as well. We did a guided tour and the guides were very knowledgeable about their museum. I have been there several times now and the kids are never disappointed. Definitely recommend!

A great way to get up and close to animals. The taxidermied animals are very well preserved, I saw some from the 1880s and they were in fantastic condition. Having a guide or getting some instruction is best if it is your first visit as it is spread out within the building.

Lots of great information about the past cultures and the geology of Iowa. Much of the other displays and animal mounts seem dated by todays museum standards. Still a fun place to visit and the staff is very helpful.

Its small, but had interesting displays. It had a few things I had not seen at other museums. Worth the visit.

This museum was very nice. It had a good mix of old exhibits and taxidermy that I found fascinating. The more taxidermy heavy exhibits up above were really neat, but some of them need to be restored. My favorite part of the museum was their stuffed dodo bird. I had never seen one before, and they were fluffier than I expected. They had other rare/extinct birds on display, too, and it was sobering to see how weve lost those species forever. If you have an hour and are in the area, I recommend checking out this museum.

A nice little museum. Free entry for anyone, no tickets nothing. Only note - the building is also used for lectures by the university, so if youre visiting the museum, especially during the semester, please remember that and try to be as quiet as possible.

Loved it. A bit small but fun and informative. Museums of this type are my favorite. True old school displays that help you learn about the area. Not the downdowned video museums that so many have converted to. Staffed by students who are glad to talk to you about natural history. It is fun talking to the kids who are excited about their area of major. Iowa folks are the best.

Not very stroller friendly. I couldn’t find a way to get to the side with the birds because I had to take the elevator and the only way to that side was to go through the auditorium where class was being held.

To be perfectly honest, Frank, I just wasnt prepared for the sass of that sloth. The sloth-sass, as they say. There I was, perusing this here museum of natural history, and suddenly BAM. Sloth. Giant sloth. Mega sloth. Super Giant Mega sloth. What was I to do? I wasnt trained for this kind of situation. I hadnt prepared to meet my sloth this day.So here I am now, Franklin, over my head in natural history. But you know what? Compared to the sass-sloth, the rest of this place is, well, also natural history. Stuffed mammals over there, stuffed birds over here, its all good stuff...ed.

This is one of my favorite things in Iowa City. It is a great place to take children. There is no charge, although a voluntary donation is welcome. The dioramas can be very exciting, even a little scary, for pre-schoolers. I find the exhibits in bird hall to be an excellent way to review many of the birds (including the spring warblers) one is likely to see around Iowa City.
