Absolutely beautiful hiking trails! And trails for everyone, from families with kids to serious hikers. I wish there were more primitive camping options, but we found a nice tent site for the weekend.

Very nice state park. Large and clean lake that is perfect for water sports. Lots of camp sites. Plenty of clean restrooms and shower houses. Close to Independence, KS so a quick run to shopping and restaurants.

It was a nice park. The signage could have been improved; since we drove around a long time looking for the rock formations. A passerby told us where & it was closed for construction ️

Nice clean compact park, 5 dollars per car per day entrance fee is in addition to camping fee but for 25 dollars you get an annual pass to all Kansas State Parks. There is swimming in the lake and several playgrounds, free showers. The big attraction is the trail.

The trails are beautiful the water is pretty clean for being a lake and the people you meet are very nice. Pricing is very affordable for a day trip or camping for weeks! It always a good day at Elk City State Park!

Beautiful, clean place! The camp spots are big and cemented. Fun time for Halloween, kids come by to trick or treat! I would come back every year.

The park is a mixed bag. Management is excellent. Josh the ranger is so helpful. He allowed me to change campsites and was responsive to my questions. Comfort Cove and Sunset Point campgrounds are simply awful and poorly designed. Sites are cheek by jowl and all you can hear all day and into the night are big power boats. There have been floods and some sort of tree blight on multiple tree species, so theyve lost a lot of trees. That means hot summer sun. Three or four groups of campers walked through my campsite after midnight, talking loudly. These folks dont know theres a pandemic. No one did social distancing. One lady decided to chew out her babysitter on her cell phone, right under my window at 11 PM. I had to tell her to go away. If she had MY cell phone number I suppose shed chew ME out too. I switched over the Prairie Meadow campground which was like heaven. Quiet, trees everywhere, green, sites far apart. I wish there were more hiking trails closer by the campgrounds. A bit more interpretation would be nice. Its an interesting area historically and geologically.

One of my favorite places in the entire state. Hilly, rock formations, fairly dense oak and pine wooded areas. Best hiking in KS but watch for muddy conditions if it has rained recently. Accomodations are just nice enough--all you need but still rustic.

I have camped then ran the FlatRock 50k here twice now and both times have been positive experiences! The RV area close to the water can be a little loud at night but the next year I went to the tent only areas and it was nice and quiet! Trails are kept up very well and as always, very difficult!

We hiked a portion of the Overlook Trail today. Its a little rugged & steep in places but definitely worth the effort. The leaves have accumulated on the ground now so it was a bit slick at times on slopes. The rock outcroppings, overhangs and channels are beautiful as well as a little technical to maneuver through! Trekking poles are very beneficial. We love it out there and go frequently. The biggest problem is the bathrooms have been closed for a couple of years now and its a popular place so theres no privacy really to take care of business but the views of the lake peeking through the trees and the sunsets keep luring us back. Theres also a short easy trail that we take our grandkids on beside the parking area. Its common to see deer and other, small animals like squirrels, coons, opossums and armadillos anywhere along the way. Overall a diverse setting for everything from picnicking to (short) climbing or rappelling.

Arguably the best hiking in Kansas! We hiked the 15 mile Elk River Trail. Gorgeous views throughout the whole trail especially looking out over the lake at the beginning on the east side and the little waterfall towards the end on the west side. I love that its actual hiking verses just walking. The trail is well marked, clean, and well maintained. I brought my two dogs. The trail pretty dog friendly, but I did have to help lift them up/down in a few steep spots. Both ends of the trail have good sized parking areas and large maps. If you have trouble finding these trail heads, the park office can direct you even through the trail is technically not on park property and therefore free to park and hike. We hiked the 15 mile trail in a little over 7hrs but made a deliberate effort to keep a decent pace. The trail map says its an 11hr hike. Highly recommend though you will definitely be sore the next day. Enjoy!

It was a very beautiful park the reason I give it a 4 star and not a 5 because I think because of the rain we saw in the past m month they havent yet cleaned up because there was way too many SPIDERS ALLOT. And some of the good hiking its not advertise. The most advertise was my least the least advertise was to me the best plus if the trails was a little bit more clearer lol who stays on them anyways but if you bringing family and wife demands that we stay on the straight and narrow dont want her to get mad if I tell her I think this is the way lol

Several campgrounds here, at least five. Many sites arent 100% level, but not so far off that it cant be fixed with levelers. I have seen trappers place steel traps to catch beaver right next to the campground so be careful if you walk the shore, especially with dogs.

I visited here with a friend to do some hiking. The trails were less hiking and more walking through a forest. Although the beginning was clearly marked, about 3/4 through there was no visible trail and we ended up turning back. All in all it was a fairly mediocre hike, and the trail wasnt very well maintained. We were hoping for something a little more challenging in difficulty and less confusing, but we were ultimately a bit disappointed.

One of the really nice sand(ish) lakes in Kansas. Not too far from out of town and theres even a camping area if you happen to want to camp! The swimming area is really nice. There are still small pebbles and sometimes rocks depending where you are but for the most part its a pretty nice sandy beach! Lots of trees for camping or setting up a hammock.
