We were stuck below! Ask when the shaft will be used by the miners so that you are not stuck for 1.5 hours waiting for the shaft to open to go back up to the top to leave. There needs to be more communication between staff and patrons on when they should end their tour and train ride so that they are not stuck for 1.5 hours below. Johnathan the maintenance man was very accommodating and gave us a tour which was very kind of him in this situation. He should be management in the mine below. Our entrance fees were reduced to three child tickets instead of a full refund for the miscommunication. I felt torn and feel we should have had a full refund as we did see the museum but the poor communication from staff had us without option for leaving. The walls were beautiful and the relics and train rides were interesting. Just go to the mine with a whole day in mind as you could get stuck unnecessarily.
The salt mines are awesome. They have scheduled times for tours all day long and a professional staff. When you get 650 ft below the ground into the mine, you can take a tour, write a train, or ride in the dark ride. Once you finish the dark Ride, you are able to pick a piece of souvenir salt. Dont forget to visit the gift shop as well.
Museum design and layout is great. Tour was fun and guides were very knowledgeable.
My family loved this! Worth the trip down into the mine
They are very well prepared, and you definantly receive much information on the mine, past and present.
Took the 2 hour tour option (around $20 per person) and really enjoyed the experience

This place is a hidden gem. I’d recommend visiting the Salt Mines at least once in your lifetime. It’s that kind of experience. It’s truly fascinating what is stored hundreds of feet underground in a fairly rural part of Kansas.
Great experience!
Great time.a bit pricey especially with a group.but fun and interesting.
What an amazing tour
A must see 660 ft below 150 mikes of tunnels. Great train ride and knowledgeable staff.
I knew it was there, but finally was able to see it. Pretty crazy!
Pang the $12.50 was well worth the extra tour. We had a lot of fun.
Awesome place. I have taken high school students here when we visited Hutchinson the past 2 years. The students enjoyed the experience. I highly recommend the tour and the tram ride that allows you to find a perfect piece of salt. Great place to visit.
Speechless. A must do for all ages.
We visited Strataca, the underground salt mine in Hutchinson, KS, during mid-summer when the temps were 100+ degrees above ground. We so enjoyed the 68 degree, cool temps, down 650 ft. below ground level. The historical items that are found in the salt mines along with the stories that accompany the items are amazing. The salt mine guides can answer all your questions and enjoy giving you insights about working below ground. The amount and the technology used to mine salt from the 1940s until the present day show the ingenuity of our US innovators. Enjoy a cool trip and go to the underground salt mines!
Weve been here a few times and continue to come bringing family and friends. Is always interesting and we always find new things.
Expensive but worth it. Dark in the mine. Who would have thought.
Great tour. Lots to see, and different than anything else you can do. Everyone was super helpful, and did their best to make sure everyone had a great time.
