This park is nice for easy hikes. They have built raised wooden walkways over the wetlands and the prairie. Walking near the little ponds is covered, while the wetlands and prairie is not. It is free to enter and has catch and release fishing. It was uncrowded the morning we went. Only spent a few hours there as it was very hot.

In July, early August, the American lotus water lilies are in full bloom. The giant white flowers are easy to enjoy while walking the path along the lake. Great place for photography during that time. The park is NOT a well-maintained park. The park needs to be improved.

I love coming here the most because of the nice walking paths they have. The observation tower is cool to look off of. I enjoy nature so much, every since I was a little girl Ive enjoyed walking through creek beds, looking for fossils, walking through the woods looking for interesting insects. The day I visited, I had two special guest. One was a green and white caterpillar or worm, not sure and also a little red lady bug with black spots. They both were crawling on my shoulders while I was picnicking. So cute. My friend put the caterpillar back on a tree and I let the lady bug crawl down my arm to the table. If you have a phobias of spiders, I dont recommend going up the elevator. I had one drop down in front of me as I was leaving the tower, when the door opened. Also, there were two, quite large, wasp nest in the rafters of the tower. If youre allergic to wasp I dont recommend you going to visit here without a Benadryl or epi pen on you. However, if your a hillbilly, stump jumper and like walking through the woods for fun, this is the place to go. The gators usually go into hibernation in the winter time so you might have to wait until spring if you want to see them. They also offer tours and free fishing for the kiddos, if you throw them back. No keepers brought home...lol. Give it a try, lots of flowers, plants, and wildlife to see. Ive had a couple of bunnies and squirrels run across the path in front of me while I was walking as well. Great place to bring the grandkids. They have lots of places to fish, the water is up real high right now so you cant see the islands in the reservoir but you can see the tops of the trees. They have restrooms, a wash station outside the restrooms and everything is accessible by wheelchair if needed. Come out, bring the kids, make a day of it enjoying what God has so richly blessed us with.

This is a great place to go if you want to get back to nature, but not too far away. Trails are OK, but I will say the big loop trail kind of in the prairie area will get extremely hot in the summer heat. But, if you head towards the observation tower, theres shade along those trails. They have cool ponds that almost all look different. We tried fishing in the kids pond, but theres a ton of lily pads, so you tend to get hung up. We were using worms, and got bites from blue gills, but too small to get them hooked. It may have also been too hot (it was like 11AM, and full sun).Theres bathrooms, and places to have a picnic.I will say, there were more people than we expected, but it was a weekend. People wore their masks for the most part and there was plenty of room to distance from other families.

Nice, free state park. Has catch and release fishing in stocked ponds (not the main lake) and several hiking trails. My only complaint is that it closes at 5pm.

If you have never been to Sheldon for the fishing, then you are missing out. This place is loaded with big aggressive bass that will give you a good fight. Its about 30 minutes from me so I dont go as often as Id like. Im not too sure how bank fishing is cause Ive always gone in a boat. The 1st time I went, we got back from fishing in boat and I threw out some catfish rigs on the bank. Sat maybe 20 minutes and didnt get any cats, but got my 1st bowfin. It was 28 at 7lbs and fought like a beast. Only negative thing about this lake is the grass. It has taken over almost the whole lake and trolling through it is a pain and your limited on what lures you can use. Last weekend we could only use top water and most of the time it had to be a weedless top water. Maybe its why the bass fishing is so good there though and I do enjoy pulling in those bass. You will also see alligators, but no need to fear them. They keep their distance as you should keep your distance. They always just move out of your way and let you pass, then go back to their spots

About 40 minutes from our house is this interesting state park that is organized into nature study areas. They have many classes for kids and I plan to try to catch a few. There are apparently alligators in the park although we didnt see any! There are series of swampy bogs with little walk ways in between them. There is also a very tall observation tower which has an elevator making the top accessible to everyone! We managed to walk up AND down all those stairs!!! At the top I noticed Lily hanging back and hesitating to walk down. Board walks, decent bathrooms, picnic tables, and many benches are also delightful features of this park. It does close at 5pm so we had to cut our time a little short, but it was really a fun park and I would 100% go back.

Such a nice retreat from the city! Trails are well maintained. Saw two alligators and plenty of fish. The view from the John Jacob Observation Tower was spectacular. No pictures because I wanted to be present in my exploration.

This is Mlmy favorite educational state, park that Ive visited of the Houston area. One of its purposes is to have prarie grassland which is less than 1% of ecosystem in America. Also, its to have water with a wetland area. It is constantly booked for field trips because of all of the learning potential: water turbidity, planting seeds, wetland animals, watershed, renewable energy, etc. The park has camping as well with family days and park ranger scout activities!

This is a great place for hiking. There are several trails so you can take long or shorter routes. You will see so much wildlife and nature. It is truly a diverse ecosystem. Use some caution as there are snakes. There is platform near the entrance where you can see alligators. The alligators do roam freely. For that reason, this park is not suitable for small dogs. At one end of the park, there is an outlook which has an elevator if you dont want to take the stairs.

Great place to fish, get there early because it gets crowded on the weekends and it seems like people that fish there are googans. There can be 100 yards of open space but yet people will park and fish 10 feet from you like its ok, like its not disrespectful at all. It is a public place so nothing you can do about it. Fishing the lake from a boat is 10 times better than from the bank just because of the people.
