Great history lesson when you take the time to watch the video of the battle of Iwo Jima at the museum. Inspiring sculpture. Makes one grateful for those who fought and are fighting for our freedom. This is the plaster casting of the monument in Arlington, VA.
Plaster replica of the original. Nice park with good explanation material situated around. Gift shop is closed on Sunday. Talks about all of the sacrifices of the Marines over time and especially at Iwo Jima. Much historic value in understanding the significance of this island of rock as it was actually the first part of Japan- Tokyo prefecture- that the US attempted to take. The famous photo of the flag raising was actually the second raising, primarily for photo ops. 3 of the 6 men died before the fighting was over.
Great place to visit. My husband Retired Marine Captain Foster Little Jr., was a true Semper-Fi. And volunteered with pleasure at the museum.Thank you for your service My Love! Letty.
Friendly and fascinating. Theres no reason why this place should have under 5 stars.
Nice little museum. Friendly staff. Must go and see.
We were outside of the gift shop because my sons graduation ceremony was held in front of the monument. Lots of opportunity to learn about the history of the academy and significance of the monument. One thing to note- The mosquitoes were bad!
This is the original Iwo Jima statue. The Bronze in Washington d.c was made from the plaster design. The sculptor, Felix Deweldon, kept the plaster design in a hanger in Rhode Island until 1981, when he then brought it down to Harlingen, Texas. My son was a Cadet there and the ceremony was in the Spring of 1982. It has been misreported for over 40 years as the copy of the Washington d.c bronze. Its actually the reverse! I was at the dedication and I remember the cadets collapsing in the heat.
Well worth the visit. This small museum is packed with relevant artifacts. Also, shows a very informative documentary on the battle to take Iwo Jima Island. Museum and gift shop is associated with Marine Military Academy, which you can also tour.
Very wonderful place to visit, I could take a nap there if I could.
Quiet. Peaceful. Shade.

The grounds are well kept and the statue speaks for itself. The people in the shop are very friendly. The short video is worth a watch. Overall, my family and I had a great experiences and learned a bit more on the battle.
The monument is just like going to DC but easier access. The video was very informative. Gift shop was particularly good if you are interested in military oriented stuff. Museum could maybe use a little work, but I am not an expert. I enjoyed what I saw. Definitely worth a visit.
