Been here a few times both with a smaller group and on a motorcycle ride. There are lots of trails and a little village. The village is kinda cool if a bit creepy but certainly interesting. Great for hiking since it’s remote and set in a state forest. I recommend a visit!

Batsto Village is an historic site in the South Central Pinelands of New Jersey. It is known throughout the country, both for its beauty and its historical significance. Batsto has roots dating back to 1766, with nearly two and a half centuries of American history available for its visitors to see, all with the lovely Pinelands as a scenic backdrop.

Lovely day to be outside. Theres a QR based narrative tour you can do for free on your smartphone. It talks about the industrial village of the 1800s, the bog iron, the mill, etc. Well-maintained paths and buildings. Although the visitor center was closed and no park rangers (because of Covid) the bathrooms were open and clean. Great place to enjoy the outdoors and mix it up with some history.

Well preserved village. A lot of American History back from when, George Washington and his men resided there. Fun for all family. You can still walk the village but tours are closed at this time but if you have a scanner on your phone every house and place in the village has a story to tell. Awesome get away there is so much more then the village. Go camping stay awhile and enjoy the history. You can pick up maps at the village center outside in front of building. It explains all the areas to explore.

I recently visit the place and as a photographer I found it very interesting and the history of the place is incredible, I will encourage to visit the site and the Wharton State Forest with many hiking trails. They also have a museum at the welcome center and a store, one thing that I wonder if they allow fishing there it looks like could be a lot of trout as well, they also have many kids activities.

Batsto is a very unique place with an interesting history. Definitely worth a visit. If you like history, architecture, taking pictures, and walking around outside you will have a good time. If you read the history before going (Wikipedia has a great article) you will enjoy it more. I was disappointed that the mansion tour did not include the third floor or the tower. Also, some of the mansion was not part of the tour because it’s offices for the park service. There is no photography allowed inside the mansion. I was not informed of this when I bought tickets for the tour and waited for it to start. The tickets are only $3 but the amount of the interior that you get to see might not be worth your time. Most of the furniture and objects inside were also “of the period” but not from the mansion originally. So, really you can skip the mansion tour in my opinion. The mansion is better from the outside than it is on the inside.

There was suppose to be a fair or festival going on, but it was raining, so by the time I got there, most people were gone. I did go into the visitation center to ask a few questions and the young lady that helped me wasnt helpful at all. She answered me like as if I should have known and didnt seem to know much. I then went outside to do some exploring and stop to talk to the very last vendor packing up. They were much more helpful and knew more than the girl actually working in the visitor center.

Step back in time about 300 years when you visit this sprawling iron ore mining village. At the time it was self-sustaining with worker cottages, an underground ice house where cut blocks of ice from the nearby lake were stored year round, a blacksmith shop, general store, and on and on. Even on a rainy damp day like this the atmosphere is peaceful, quiet, miles away from the noise and crowds of modern society. Been visiting here since I was a teen and always come back when Im in town. If you like history and quiet peaceful woodsy settings then you have to visit Batsto and also tour the mansion. Bring a camera.

Great place to explore and imagining how life was back in the day. My best friend and I took a tour of the mansion on a very hot Friday during the summer. I couldnt believe that mansion had AC and it was so refreshing. It was just the 2 of us and a male volunteer guide. I wish I remembered the guides name because he was freaking awesome and took time to let us really take in the sight of each room. He was super knowledgeable about everything in the mansion. I went back another time while the post office was open to get a stamp from Batso Village. There are original signatures on the desk! I cant wait to go back!
